Suspended for media byte, IIT-B pupil to be reinstated

Time of India11 hours ago
Mumbai: IIT-Bombay must reinstate a Ph D student who had been suspended in April this year for 'giving unauthorised interviews to the media'. Bombay high court has said this in an order passed on July 15.
The court said that the suspension will cease to have effect from July 25 and the period of suspension undergone will not have any bearing on the record of the petitioner. An official from the institute said they would follow the court's order.
The student, Akshay Sawant, from department of humanities and social sciences, was suspended for eight months based on a report of the institute's fact-finding committee and disciplinary action committee.
He moved court seeking quashing of the suspension order, stating that the charges levelled were unfounded and misplaced and the action taken against him was based on 'false, unreasonable and arbitrary charges'.

The allegations are baseless and merely an attempt to target the department's liberal environment'.
The statement was made in the context of the allegations of favouritism against the institute by third parties.
The student got a call regarding 'unauthorised interviews given to the media'.
The student said in the petition that he did not give consent for the quote to the mediaperson, which he had also submitted before the fact-finding committee.
The student received an order on Apr 28, suspending him till Dec 31, 2025, with immediate effect. Even after writing to the institute appealing against the order, there was no response, forcing the student to move court.
Disposing of the petition, the court mentioned that the order was passed in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case so that the academic career of the petitioner should not be jeopardised. The order said he had made the statements in the article in an individual capacity.
Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, a student collective, on Friday said in a statement they were celebrating "victory for students' rights and a pushback against casteist and authoritarian tendencies of the IIT- Bombay administration…"

UP horror: 4-year-old 'digitally raped' in Lucknow; accused arrested

Representative Image LUCKNOW : A four-year-old girl was allegedly 'digitally raped' by her school van driver in Lucknow, according to a complaint filed at Indiranagar police station, news agency ANI reported. The incident took place on July 14. Police have arrested the accused driver, identified as Mohd Arif. According to the FIR, Arif also allegedly threatened the child's family with death if they approached police. The school manager, Sandeep Kumar, has also been named as a co-accused. Police have invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The child's mother told me that her complaints to the school were ignored and that both the driver and school officials tried to suppress the incident. "The school had provided me with the van. My child complained of pain in her private parts. On examination, I found that she had suffered an injury. I complained to the principal, who said she would talk about it. When I took the child to the doctor, the doctor said that whatever the child had said was done to her and something was inserted in her private parts," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? I waited for two days but no action was taken by the school and the driver called again to pick the child for school. When we confronted him, he harassed us in front of the school and made casteist remarks. We were threatened with abduction, even the school also asked us not to complain. I have all the proof. Police has registered an FIR and a medical test of my child was conducted. The case will be heard in the high court today," she added further. What is digital arrest? Digital rape refers to the non-consensual insertion of fingers or toes (referred to as "digits") into person's private.

FDI landscape: Niti Aayog suggests easing regulations for Chinese investment; 24% stake may be allowed without clearance

Niti Aayog has recommended a major policy shift in the country's global investment landscape, proposing that Chinese entities be allowed to acquire up to a 24% stake in Indian companies without the need for additional security clearance. The move could potentially ease the investment process for firms from the neighbouring country, which currently face lengthy delays due to mandatory government approvals. Under existing rules, any investment from Chinese entities requires security clearance from the Indian government. These restrictions were introduced in July 2020, when India barred companies from countries sharing a land border from participating in government procurement contracts, citing national security concerns and the need to avoid hostile takeovers. Such bidders must register with a committee set up by the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT), and obtain political and security clearances from the ministries of external and home affairs, respectively. 'The report has gone. We need to see what happens,' a government official told ET, indicating that the proposal is now under review. As of now, the report is being examined by key ministries including finance, commerce and industry, and external affairs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fastest Selling Plots of Mysore from 40L | 40+ Amenities PurpleBrick Learn More Undo The timing of the proposal is notable, coming soon after external affairs minister S Jaishankar's first visit to China in five years. During his meeting with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in Beijing, Jaishankar raised concerns over restrictive trade practices and barriers to economic cooperation, particularly in the context of China's restrictions on rare earth magnet exports to India. The EAM also discussed the issue of faster de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, on which, both sides reportedly agreed to take additional and practical steps to ease tensions. The Economic Survey 2024 had also recommended a calibrated easing of restrictions on Chinese foreign direct investment, arguing that it would boost India's integration into global supply chains and help increase exports. The proposal, if implemented, could mark a shift in India's cautious stance, permitting foreign direct investments from China. This could give a boost to India's supply chain participation and encourage exports. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
