INDIA front should hold meeting before Bihar elections: Uddhav
'The INDIA front has not held its meeting since the Lok Sabha election. I wish the meeting takes place as Bihar elections are approaching. Even Maharashtra is set to face local body elections. It is important that the INDIA front holds the meeting,' said Thackeray.
The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) was formed before the 2024 general elections by all major Opposition parties in the country. The alliance was formed to contest the general elections together against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The INDIA front in Maharashtra comprises of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) — which formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
With local body polls approaching, the MVA is yet to finalise on whether to contest the elections in alliance or independently.
Reacting to the ongoing case of over the party symbol and name in the Supreme Court, Thackeray said that it is good if the case gets over in August. 'Our symbol was robbed. I have always maintained that Election Commission has a right to allot symbol but not to give the party name. It cannot change the name, that's not its right. Even the case is ongoing about its rights over changing poll symbol,' said Thackeray.
Congress to burn copies of Special Public Security Bill
The Opposition Congress on Monday announced that it will burn the copies of recently passed Maharashtra Special Public Security bill in all districts of the state. Party's state unit chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said, 'This law is draconian inside and out and is meant to suppress the common people. That is why the Congress opposed it from the very beginning. Despite the ruling party having passed the bill using their majority in the assembly, the Congress's opposition remains strong, and symbolic burning of this black law will be carried out in every district.'

On Saturday, the Congress demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in Parliament to clarify the matter. Taking a veiled swipe at the Opposition, Dhankhar remarked, 'Is it necessary to respond to every provocation? In cricket, a smart batsman leaves the bad balls—tempting, but best avoided. Those who go for them often end up caught behind or in the slips.' Addressing the young officers, the Vice-President warned that challenging times may test national unity. He contrasted ongoing global conflicts—such as Israel-Palestine and Russia-Ukraine—with India's calibrated response to the April Pahalgam terror attack under 'Operation Sindoor'. 'We've seen prolonged global wars with massive destruction. In contrast, India acted with restraint and precision. We struck Bahawalpur and Muridke and then paused—Operation Sindoor is still ongoing. Will they, won't they: SP, Azad to join hands for 2027 UP polls?
1 2 3 4 Lucknow: Having missed the chance to contest the 2022 UP assembly polls together, will Azad Samaj Party (ASP) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad ally with Samajwadi Party for the 2027 assembly polls? Of late, the two sides have been maintaining a noticeably soft approach towards each other and abstaining from making any critical remarks against one another like they did after their alliance talks failed in 2022. Political analysts say that in the present political scenario, a tie-up between SP and ASP will better their positions against the BJP. "It will help SP avoid being seen as a party pitted against a Dalit leader – a strategy that restrained SP from attacking the BSP and Mayawati aggressively in the 2022 assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In fact, reaching out to Azad would help SP position itself as a friend of Dalits," said an analyst. For Azad, the tie-up with SP will help the party steer clear of insinuations that by going solo in 2027 polls it will help the BJP by dividing the Dalit votes. The fact that Azad had tried to team up with Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Ittehad-Ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) in UP ahead of the 2024 LS polls, had already muddied the waters, particularly when Owaisi was dubbed as the B team of the BJP by its political adversaries in UP. In his recent TV interviews, Azad has repeatedly maintained that he enjoys cordial relations with Akhilesh Yadav. Responding to a query on possibility of forging alliance (with SP) in future polls, Azad said his party will contest the 2026 UP panchayat elections independently. He, however, did not sound so categorical about going solo for the 2027 assembly polls. 'The party will take a call on the issue', he said. Azad admitted that he was in touch with Akhilesh but hastened to add that the two often meet when Parliament is in session. At the SP front, senior party functionary Udaiveer Singh recently praised Azad for the hard work he has put in to enjoy the political success that he has achieved till now. The former SP MLC even acknowledged that ideologically Azad was aligned to the INDIA bloc and SP. "But for all practical purposes, Azad was yet to be seen towing a clear political line," he said. Within the SP there is a view that Azad is yet to take on the BJP the way SP and other INDIA bloc partners have. Going by the 'extreme caution' being exercised by the two sides on committing to a likely alliance for the 2027 polls, it appears that neither is in a hurry to make the first move. Possibly neither of them wants a repeat of 2022 when they talked alliance but could not seal the deal. So what exactly happened in 2022?: Azad had met the SP chief and asked for three seats. Azad sought Rampur Maniharan seat in Saharanpur for himself which the SP had already allotted to its then ally — Rashtriya Lok Dal. Akhilesh asked Azad to talk to RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary to spare the seat and in exchange gave a seat to RLD in Mathura district. Azad also sought a seat in Ghaziabad to which Akhilesh agreed. For the third seat, SP had already committed to another contender, Akhilesh assured Azad that they will find a way out. The talks lasted well over 90 minutes. But shortly thereafter, the talks failed after Azad accused Akhilesh of anti-Dalit approach while SP claimed that Azad left the alliance talks inconclusive after he got a call from a leader from another party. With SP putting up its best ever show by bagging 37 seats and Azad making his debut in Parliament in the 2024 LS polls, the spirits were high in both camps till early 2025 until the Milkipur assembly bypoll in Feb 2025 clipped the enthusiasm. The bypoll was necessitated after the sitting MLA Awadhesh Prasad registered a historic win for SP from Faizabad (Ayodhya) LS seat. BJP's Chandra Bhanu Paswan won the Milkipur bypoll with 1.46 lakh votes while SP's Ajit Prasad – Awadesh Prasad's son - bagged 84,477 votes and Azad Samaj Party's Santosh Kumar got 5,459 votes.

Didi slams Himanta over mother tongue ‘persecution threat'
Kolkata: Persecution for speaking in one's mother tongue was both "discriminatory and unconstitutional", CM Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday, stressing that she stood by the "people of Assam who are fighting for dignity of their language, identity and democratic rights". Banerjee, referring to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma 's recent comment that "writing Bengali as mother tongue will help quantify foreigners", posted on X: "The second most spoken language in the country, Bangla, is also the second most spoken language of Assam. To threaten citizens who want to coexist peacefully respecting all languages and religions with persecution for upholding their own mother tongue is discriminatory and unconstitutional." This "divisive agenda of BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back", Banerjee said. "People of Bengal get respect wherever there is BJP. We will not allow a conspiracy against Bengal's 'asmita'. It is Modi's guarantee," he said. Banerjee's strongly worded statements looked like a throwback to her 2018 comments on Assam when Hindu Bengalis were being incarcerated under NRC. Back then, Trinamool had protested strongly against it both in Bengal and in Parliament. Recalling the days of the "Bongal kheda" (throw out Bengalis) campaign in Assam in the 1960s, '70s and '80s — which led to a massive migration of Bengalis from the state to Bengal — the CM had said: "It has made a comeback. Bengalis are being driven out of Assam. It will have an impact on Bengal because our state shares a border with it. We can't be mere onlookers. I warn BJP not to play with fire. We will not spare them if people come under attack." Sarma, debunking TMC claims, argued earlier this week that the recent drives were only against "illegal Bangladeshi Muslims" which, he claimed, threatened Assam's demography. But Trinamool questioned this logic. TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya argued: "You claim your govt only targets 'illegal Bangladeshi Muslims'. But in the final NRC list, out of the 19.6 lakh people excluded, 12 lakh were Bengali Hindus. Was their faith the problem too? Or was it their language? You say your crusade isn't against Bengalis. Then how do you explain the fact that all but four of the 30 people who died in Assam's detention centres were Bengali-speaking?" TMC's Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who heads the party in Assam, said: "As always, BJP's last trick in the bag in a state where it is losing ground is division among the peace-loving people of Assam. Double-engine sarkar has given us a state neck deep in debt, corruption, failed NRC, failed CAA, no resolution to solve infiltration, no respect for laws or human rights, only oppression, fear and communalism. United, we have to reject this regressive politics. "
