Pakistan develops its first-ever indigenous biomolecule to make anti-rabies vaccine

KARACHI: In a historical breakthrough in health and medical sciences, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has successfully achieved lab-scale formulation of Pakistan's first indigenous human anti-rabies vaccine.
This milestone positions the country on the path toward self-reliance in combating dog-bite cases that claim many lives every year.
The pharmaceutical industry officials confirmed that this is the first-ever indigenous human vaccine developed from a locally achieved biological molecule, creating a new history in the health and medical sciences in Pakistan.
The World Bank supported the project. It was implemented by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Dow University started commercial production of anti-rabies vaccine from Chinese raw material last year, naming it 'Dow Rab'. Now the university has developed its own indigenous biomolecule that will be used to develop the vaccine.
This would reduce the country's heavy dependence on imported vaccines worth billion of rupees in a year.
According to the university's website, its Linkedin's post, and confirmation by its officials to Business Recorder 'this (the vaccine) purified, inactivated, lyophilised vaccine has been developed from a locally isolated rabies virus strain, marking a critical step forward in the fight against rabies in Pakistan'.
With lab-scale success achieved, the project will now progress to the manufacturing of clinical trial batches for the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) approval, 'bringing us closer to national vaccine production and use,' the DUHS announcement read.
Current state of vaccines in Pakistan
Speaking at International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, the other day, Macter, Director Quality Operations and Biotech, Farooq Mustafa said Pakistan completely depends on imported vaccines, which are donated and supplied at discounted price worth totaling around Rs26 billion a year with the support of GAVI, UNICEF and WHO.
The GVAI support is ending by 2031. This will increase financial burden to Rs100 billion annually in vaccine imports that comes to around four time of the federal health budget at Rs27 billion.
The anticipated development do not only suggests a looming crisis in the healthcare system of Pakistan, but at the same time provides an opportunity to the country to shift its focus towards achieving self-reliance in vaccine manufacturing indigenously.
Mustafa also wrote in an article that Pakistan produces virtually no antigens for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) vaccines domestically.
'We lack essential seed banks, have minimal university-based vaccine development programmes, and operate with regulatory guidelines that are inadequate for sophisticated vaccine manufacturing. Our clinical trial expertise remains severely limited, creating bottlenecks in bringing locally developed vaccines to market,' he said.

As a result of this superficial criterion for well-being, children born with autism, who experience trouble reaching various neuro-developmental milestones, are often left neglected not only by caregivers but also by healthcare providers. Although lack of awareness on autism persists across the whole country, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), the issue is significantly more alarming since till date the government has failed to establish a single public autism centre during their 14 years of holding office. Across the province, including Peshawar, there is no government-run facility to diagnose or treat children living with autism, leaving families to rely on expensive private centres or seek online consultations from other cities and abroad. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines autism as a diverse group of conditions marked by some degree of difficulty with social interaction and communication. Among children, the most common symptoms include difficulty in speech, avoiding eye contact, repetitive movements, social isolation and fixed preferences and routines. According to the Autism Society of Pakistan, nearly 400,000 children in Pakistan suffer from autism, with around 150,000 belonging to K-P and the nearby tribal areas. Alarmingly, K-P's health and social welfare departments do not even maintain official data on these children, highlighting a complete absence of state-level awareness or planning. As a result, parents are forced to approach facilities like PIMS in Islamabad, the Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi, or even attend costly online sessions with foreign experts. One such parent was Sidra Khan, whose four-year-old son was diagnosed with autism. It took her three months to even find a doctor for consultation. After an online session with a US-based doctor via PIMS, she discovered that no government centres for autism existed in K-P. At a private centre in Peshawar's University Town, she was charged Rs100,000 per month for therapy, forcing her to sell family property to continue her son's treatment. Similarly, Kamran, another parent from inner Peshawar, revealed that his nine-year-old son's autism was diagnosed three years ago. Due to the absence of experts in Peshawar, he is now planning to relocate to Islamabad or Karachi. Similarly, Nafeesa, a mother of two autistic children from K-P, was compelled to move to Islamabad to enroll her children into a special needs school, after spending nearly Rs200,000 to Rs300,000 on their unsuccessful treatment in Peshawar. According to a survey conducted by the Express Tribune, Peshawar has just one semi-public autism centre, which started as a project in 2021 and became operational in 2023 under the Social Welfare Department. This centre, located in Hayatabad, registers only 70 children, operates with just 14 staff members, and has a waiting list of over 200 children due to space and staffing shortages. There are roughly 15 private autism centres and five schools in Peshawar, charging between Rs60,000 to Rs100,000 per month, with only one offering free therapy to underprivileged families. Approximately 700 children receive therapy in these private facilities. Clinical psychologist, Masooma Khan explained that psychological, speech, occupational, and behavioral therapies, along with parental involvement, were essential for improving the lives of autistic children. Likewise, Dr Farrukh Tariq, a speech therapist associated with the Paraplegic Centre in Peshawar, stressed the need for early intervention, noting that most children were diagnosed at ages seven or eight, when developmental improvements become much harder. 'Government intervention is necessary for improving autism services in public hospitals, increased awareness, and affordable therapies. Lack of treatment pushes many autistic children into lifelong psychological struggles, while poor families remain helpless due to unaffordable therapy costs,' said Dr Tariq.

T1 and its two teammates, fielded by Tsinghua University's Hephaestus team, made history for China last month by winning gold in the "Humanoid, adult size" category of the 28-year-old RoboCup Humanoid League in Brazil. "The Chinese government is actively promoting humanoid robot development," said Zhao Mingguo, Chief Scientist at Booster Robotics, maker of the T1. "To advance technology, the government is actively organising competitive events, and this sports games is one such experience." While some may dismiss such events as gimmicks, industry experts and participants see them as a decisive spur to advance humanoid robots toward practical real-world deployment. Although the Hephaestus team would hardly trouble even junior human opposition, Booster Robotics views soccer as a powerful test of perception, decision-making and control technologies that could later be applied in factories or homes. "Playing football is a testing and training ground for ... helping us refine our capabilities," Zhao said. And just as in real life, moving on from the training ground is often a challenge. Pakistan and China on Monday held talks on aligning their cooperation in nuclear energy and space research with broader development goals. The development came as Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal met with China Atomic Energy Authority and China's Space Agency Chairman Shan Zhongde. "The meeting focused on aligning cooperation in nuclear energy and space research with broader national development goals," a statement said. Iqbal acknowledged that China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has played a vital role in removing bottlenecks in Pakistan's infrastructure and energy sectors. He noted that collaboration between Pakistan and China in the nuclear energy sector continues to grow. The K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear power plants stand as shining examples of this strategic cooperation. Speaking on the impacts of climate change, the minister stressed the urgent need to adopt alternative energy sources. He noted that climate change has compelled the world to explore alternative energy avenues to address vulnerabilities in food security, water, healthcare, agriculture, mineral resources and other key sectors of the economy. He said under the leadership and vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan's space programme has gained new momentum. Highlighting the "Uraan Pakistan" initiative, he maintained that special focus was being given to advancing space sciences. Recently, he said, Pakistan successfully launched three satellites with China's cooperation, adding "Pakistan is set to send its first astronaut to the Chinese space station in 2026." Iqbal also shared that Pakistan's space agency, SUPARCO, has been tasked with launching a lunar mission by 2035. He emphasised that Pakistan possessed a pool of highly skilled human resources at a relatively low cost, which China could benefit from by enhancing their capabilities through collaboration. The minister highlighted that Pakistan has established a Quantum Computing Center in response to emerging technological challenges. He stressed the importance of strengthening research partnership and knowledge exchange between CAEC, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, for the peaceful use of technology. The minister noted that the government has initiated a national programme to align science, technology, and engineering sectors with Pakistan's development goals. He emphasized the need to expand opportunities for young Pakistani scientists to receive higher education in space technology through Chinese exchange programs. Chairman Zhongde appreciated Iqbal's valuable contributions to the progress of CPEC. He said Pakistan and China enjoyed strong geo-strategic relations which have now evolved into deep-rooted economic cooperation. He affirmed that China was ready to extend full cooperation to Pakistan in the field of space research, adding both countries were committed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
