India's renewable energy capacity soars 420% in June, solar now cheaper than coal

Mumbai: India's renewable energy sector reported a 420% year-on-year growth in capacity addition in June 2025, rising from 1.4 GW last year to 7.3 GW this year, said Prahlad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy. Joshi was speaking at the
IVCA Renewable Energy Summit
in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The minister highlighted that India has witnessed an astonishing 4,000% increase in
solar energy capacity
, growing from 2.82 GW to 117 GW by 2025.
Wind energy capacity
also rose from 21 GW to 51.7 GW in the same period, marking a 140% increase.
Solar tariffs, however, have declined by 80%-from ₹10.95/unit in 2010-11 to ₹2.15/unit currently. "As a result, even solar with battery storage now costs less than thermal. In 2024, 83% of power sector investments were directed towards renewables. We were the largest recipient of global energy development finance, attracting $2.4 billion for clean energy in a single year."
Since 2020, the sector has attracted foreign direct investment exceeding ₹1.6 lakh crore, including ₹42,000 crore in 2023 alone. In the first quarter of 2025, clean energy investment surged 7.7 times year-on-year to $9.8 billion.
"Investors who backed this transition have already seen multiple returns. So should you," Joshi said, inviting further capital participation in the sector.

The minister also cited India's largest waste-to-energy plant in Ahmedabad, which converts 1,000 tonnes of solid waste daily into electricity. "These are examples of how India's energy transition is not only sustainable but also inclusive, benefitting cities, farmers, and communities," he added.

India will enter trade deals only if they're in country's interest: Piyush Goyal

Mumbai: Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said that India will enter international trade agreements only if they serve the country's interests. Addressing the media during an event organised by leading industry chamber Assocham here, the minister said if India gets a good trade deal, it will go ahead with it. Goyal said that negotiations with the US are ongoing, adding that trade deals would materialise only if these are in the country's larger interests. "If it doesn't happen, we will not do it. India always puts the country's interest first," the minister asserted. India and the US teams have concluded the fifth round of talks for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in Washington this week. The negotiations were held for four days in Washington, DC. India's chief negotiator and special secretary in the Department of Commerce, Rajesh Agrawal, lead the team for negotiations. He further stated that India has huge domestic demand. "We have imports coming into the country which can be replaced by developing domestic industry to scale for high-quality production," said the minister. Addressing a gathering of industry leaders and entrepreneurs during the event, the minister emphasised the importance of mindset change in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. He called for a shift towards collective growth and mutual cooperation between small and large companies. 'We need a change in goals, guidance and mindset. Big or small, companies have to grow together. We have to support each other and be vocal for local interests," he highlighted. He also emphasised the need for focus on research, innovation, quality and expansion by MSMEs to compete globally. The minister urged MSME stakeholders to proactively inform the government about non-tariff barriers that are impacting their businesses. 'Only when you inform us, we can take up these issues during bilateral discussions and work towards their resolution," Goyal told the industry leaders. Dwelling on the macroeconomic framework, the minister compared the current banking system with the tenure of the previous UPA government. He said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has successfully restructured the banking sector. 'During the UPA regime, the banking sector was in shambles due to rising non-performing assets (NPAs). We have restructured it in a transparent manner. Today, the banking system is strong and performing well,' said the minister.

India-EFTA trade pact to come into force from Oct 1: Piyush Goyal

The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and European Free Trade Association (EFTA), a four-member grouping, will come into effect from October 1 to generate $500 billion investment in the country, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piuysh Goyal said on Saturday. All the four EFTA countries, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway & Liechtenstein, have ratified the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and launched their documents with the repository, which is in Norway. The FTA will come into effect from October 1, Goyal said, addressing the Trade and Investment seminar organised by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( Assocham) here. India signed the FTA with the four-member grouping in March 2024 with a binding commitment of $100 billion investment and one million direct jobs in the next 15 years in India. Goyal said that his estimate is that $100 billion FDI will catalyse at least a $500 billion investment in India. This could be into brownfield or greenfield projects and maybe in some cases, even mature assets. The FTA will provide a window to Indian exporters to access large European and global markets and also give a boost to Make in India and provide opportunities to a young and talented workforce. The pact comprises 14 chapters with main focus on market access related to goods, rules of origin, trade facilitation, trade remedies, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, investment promotion, market access on services, intellectual property rights among others. The minister said with all the regulation, regulatory overburden in Europe, more and more of their businesses are either shutting down, or becoming totally niche products, or uncompetitive. For them to be able to capture world markets, they will need an alternate and more cost competitive production base. India with high quality talent and cost effectiveness offers opportunities, he added. EFTA is offering 92.2 per cent of its tariff lines which covers 99.6 per cent of India's exports. The EFTA's market access offer covers 100 per cent of non-agri products and tariff concessions on Processed Agricultural Products (PAP). India is offering 82.7 per cent of its tariff lines, which covers 95.3 per cent of EFTA exports, of which more than 80 per cent import is gold. The effective duty on gold remains untouched. Sensitivity related to production linked incentive (PLI) in sectors such as pharma, medical devices and processed food etc. have been taken into consideration while extending offers. Sectors such as dairy, soya, coal and sensitive agricultural products are kept in the exclusion list, according to a commerce ministry document.
