Arellano spoils Freighanne Garcia's 38-point outburst to salvage third place finish
NCAA
By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News
Arellano University weathered a scoring outburst from Freighanne Garcia to salvage a podium finish against Mapua University, 27-25, 22-25, 31-29, 20-25, 15-9 during their battle for third place in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Filoil Centre.
Garcia poured in a new NCAA scoring record of 38 points, eclipsing a previous mark set by Colegio de San Juan de Letran star rookie Vanessa Sarie, who churned out 37 points last May 16 against, incidentally, Arellano as well.
But the Lady Chiefs banked on the tandem of Moming Padillon and Laika Tudlasan with the former scattering 25 points anchored on 22 attacks and three blocks while the latter posted 20 markers.
Graduating opposite spiker Pau De Guzman chipped in 14 points to mark her last game in college.
"Despite sa lahat ng pinagdaanan namin, I am extremely proud po na naka-third place pa rin po 'yung team namin," KC Adante, another graduating Lady Chief, told GMA News Online.
"Nabuo 'yung bond namin as a team and nakaka-proud lang talaga na nabigyan pa rin namin ng magandang exit 'yung team this season kahit 'di namin nakuha 'yung championship."
After splitting the first four sets, Arellano got its act together in the deciding frame with Fhaye Mangubat unleashing a quick attack that sent the Lady Chiefs to a 6-4 lead before Mapua committed back-to-back attack errors that allowed Arellano to create a four-point cushion.
Garcia, though, fueled a rally that saw her unloading four consecutive attacks that sliced the gap to a solitary point, 8-9. A Padillon sent down-the-line hit before another attack error from Mapua enabled Arellano to soar to the match point at 14-9 as Garcia's attack error finished it off for Arellano.

Rookie Raymark Betco comes alive late as Benilde beats Mapua for bronze finish
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Rookie Raymark Betco provided the finishing blow as the embattled De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde escaped Mapua University, 26-24, 8-25, 25-20, 25-20, to claim the bronze medal in NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball on Wednesday at the FilOil Centre. The high-leaping opposite spiker converted the last three points for the Blazers as they salvaged a podium finish after losing twice in the Final Four round against Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Benilde then turned to a youngster in Betco, who soared from the opposite side to knot things up again. He then put the roof on Ramos to deliver the match point before destroying the two-man block of Adrian Musni and Ramos to put the seal. Betco finished with 12 points while James Marasigan top-scored with 14 markers together with six digs and 13 receptions. Rocky Motol chipped in 10 points laced with seven digs and 17 receptions. Ramos laced the Cardinals with 18 points on 14 attacks, two aces, and two blocks while Barbie San Andres and Olsen Jamisola chimed in with 12 and 11 markers apiece. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Louie Ramirez stars vs. Indonesian club in Alas Pilipinas Invitationals opener
Louie Ramirez shone on both ends to steer the Philippines to a 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-22 win against Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi of Indonesia in the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The former NCAA MVP out of the Perpetual ALTAs poured in 25 points anchored on 21 attacks, three blocks, and one ace to rally the hosts against the mighty Indonesians to open their home stand on a winning note. "Ang mindset lang namin is mailaro 'yung dapat na mailaro namin at gusting mangyari ni coach Angiolino kasi grabe 'yung paghihirap namin sa training na araw-araw," Ramirez said. "Sabi lang niya maipakita namin kung ano 'yung gusto niyang mangyari." Ramirez made his presence felt early, unleashing a flurry of attacks that allowed the Philippines to take a 20-19 lead in the opening set before opposite hitter Steven Rotter finished it off from the left side. The Ramirez-Rotter tandem continued to work wonders in Set 2, but an attack error from the former NCAA star allowed the Indonesian club to take the extended frame to level the series. Alas made sure to create some separation in the third with team captain Marck Espejo gettin lucky on the push to give his side the match point at 24-20 before Rotter sealed it with an off-the-block bullet, 25-20. Debuting Ken Batas, the reigning UAAP MVP, provided the spark off the bench by scoring three quick points in the fourth frame, including a huge rejection that sent Alas to the match point, 24-21. Indonesia's own service error put the punctuation for the Philippines. Rotter finished with 14 points while NU star Buds Buddin chipped in 11 markers. Alas Pilipinas will look to make it back-to-back wins when the FIlipinos tangle with Hyundai Capital Skywalkers of South Korea on Wednesday. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
