Arellano spoils Freighanne Garcia's 38-point outburst to salvage third place finish
NCAA
By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News
Arellano University weathered a scoring outburst from Freighanne Garcia to salvage a podium finish against Mapua University, 27-25, 22-25, 31-29, 20-25, 15-9 during their battle for third place in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Filoil Centre.
Garcia poured in a new NCAA scoring record of 38 points, eclipsing a previous mark set by Colegio de San Juan de Letran star rookie Vanessa Sarie, who churned out 37 points last May 16 against, incidentally, Arellano as well.
But the Lady Chiefs banked on the tandem of Moming Padillon and Laika Tudlasan with the former scattering 25 points anchored on 22 attacks and three blocks while the latter posted 20 markers.
Graduating opposite spiker Pau De Guzman chipped in 14 points to mark her last game in college.
"Despite sa lahat ng pinagdaanan namin, I am extremely proud po na naka-third place pa rin po 'yung team namin," KC Adante, another graduating Lady Chief, told GMA News Online.
"Nabuo 'yung bond namin as a team and nakaka-proud lang talaga na nabigyan pa rin namin ng magandang exit 'yung team this season kahit 'di namin nakuha 'yung championship."
After splitting the first four sets, Arellano got its act together in the deciding frame with Fhaye Mangubat unleashing a quick attack that sent the Lady Chiefs to a 6-4 lead before Mapua committed back-to-back attack errors that allowed Arellano to create a four-point cushion.
Garcia, though, fueled a rally that saw her unloading four consecutive attacks that sliced the gap to a solitary point, 8-9. A Padillon sent down-the-line hit before another attack error from Mapua enabled Arellano to soar to the match point at 14-9 as Garcia's attack error finished it off for Arellano.

High school volleyball coach Sandy Rieta talks about handling three teams for Perpetual
By JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG,GMA Integrated News Many coaches are already household names in collegiate volleyball like San Sebastian College-Recoletos' Roger Gorayeb, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's Jerry Yee, De La Salle University's Ramil De Jesus, or National University's Dante Alinsunurin. But while he has yet to win his own title in the collegiate ranks, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA's Sandy Rieta is carving his own path as well in high school volleyball. Rieta is the head coach of three different volleyball teams in Perpetual: the women's team in collegiate, and the boys and girls team in high school. Just recently, he steered both Perpetual high school squads to the finals of the NCAA Season 100 Volleyball Fiesta with the boys' team winning the title. It was already his seventh title with the boys team. "Walang pahinga eh," Rieta told GMA News Online after winning the boys' title last Sunday. "Bukas (Monday) tryout naman, tatlong team." [No rest... Tomorrow, we're holding tryouts, three teams.] The work just never stops for Rieta, who also handled previously Alas Pilipinas players EJ Casaña, Vince Lorenzo, and Noel Kampton. Asked how he balanced handling three teams this season — and all contenders, by the way, even if the Lady Altas finished fifth this season — Rieta himself said he asks himself the same question, too. "Minsan naiisip ko na rin 'yan pag mag-isa ako eh," he said in jest. "Lalo na 'pag talo, kailangan makaisa ka para mawala 'yung [pagod]. Ayun, time management, balance." [I sometimes think about that when I'm alone... Especially after a loss, you need to get one back so that the fatigure goes away. It's time management, balance.] Handling three teams in simultaneous tournaments is no easy task. "Katulad ng season na 'to, usually umaga laro ng boys, hapon 'yung girls or alternate sila, so 'pag may laro ang college ng 2:30 p.m. or 12 p.m., magte-training ako sa umaga, usually girls sa umaga, then alis ako, pagbalik ko high school boys." [Like this season, usually the boys play in the morning, the girls in the afternoon or they alternate so when the college teams play at 2:30 p.m. or 12 p.m., I'll hold training in the morning, usually the girls in the morning then I'll leave and when I return, it's the high school boys.] The Las Piñas-based teams also have to leave the campus four hours before their scheduled game, so add to that the travel time needed on top of his training sessions and the game proper. Rieta, however, said he is just happy with what he does. "Ganun din kasi eh, 'pag nasa puso mo, 'di ka rin nakakaramdam ng pagod, 'yung passion mo, tapos masaya ka sa ginagawa mo, hindi ka makakaramdam ng pagod. Maiisip mo lang 'yung pagod 'pag talo, honestly." [It's like that, if your heart's in it, you won't feel tired, if it's your passion, and you're happy with what you're doing, you won't feel tired. You only feel the fatigue when you lose, honestly.] Good thing that Rieta won one this season and perhaps, he can now take even just a short break before starting to prepare for the next season. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Benilde, Arellano go for clincher vs. Letran squads in Game 2 of NCAA volleyball finals
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Arellano University will shoot for glory and history when they take on separate squads of Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Game 2 of NCAA Season 100 volleyball finals on Wednesday at the Filoil Centre. The reigning champions Lady Blazers are out to close out the Lady Knights in their 2:30 p.m. clash to complete a rare four-peat run in the women's division while the Chiefs are eyeing to finish off the Knights in their 11 a.m. encounter to clinch their first-ever men's volleyball title. Benilde and Arellano flaunted their might in Game 1, but both teams are under no illusion that it will be easy from here on out. The Lady Blazers bucked a slow start after dropping the opening frame against hungry Lady Knights, but recovered in the next three sets to draw first blood with a 26-28, 26-24, 25-16, 25-19 win. Third-year middle blocker Zam Nolasco fronted the offense and defense for the Taft crew, punishing the second-seeded Letran with eight blocks to finish with a game-high 21 points and allow Benilde to inch closer to a dream four-peat. Good thing for Benilde is that Nolasco isn't lacking support with the likes of graduating Mycah Go, middle blocker Cristy Ondangan, and rising rookie Shahanna Lleses also running the show for the Lady Blazers. The 6-foot Nolasco, though, knows closing out the series will be more difficult, especially against the same team that dealt them their first loss in five years when Letran pulled off a 25-22, 25-23, 26-24 sweep win last March 8. "Siguro all out na lang. Lagi namang sinasabi sa amin ni coach na ngayong finals, i-all out namin kasi tsaka pa ba kami iiyak 'pag wala na 'yung goal na namin and ayun lang 'yung tumatatak sa amin," Nolasco told GMA News Online. "Mahirap 'yung Game 2 pero hindi naman imposible. All out na lang talaga kami, kumbaga parang wala nang bukas." The same goes with Arellano, who is eyeing to hoist the NCAA men's volleyball crown for the first time in history. The Chiefs are hoping to build on their Game 1 escape, where the wards of head coach Bryan Vitug carved a 27-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22 hard-fought win behind their veteran core made up of setter Adi Villados, Carl Berdal, Anfernee Curamen, Jiwen Sinuto, and AC Guinto. Villados unleashed another strategic ball distribution, tallying 18 excellent sets that saw five Arellano players reach double-digit marks. Berdal paced them with 19 points while Curamen and Sinuto both grabbed 13 markers. Guinto and sophomore middle blocker Jake Pangilinan listed 11 points each. The Chiefs, however, are expecting a huge fightback from the Knights come Wednesday's affair. "Well, kailangan lang namin maging composed doon sa game para matapos na. Bawal mag-relax 'pag Letran ang kalaban mo kasi tinalo nga nila 'yung number one team (Benilde) so hindi dapat magpabaya," Vitug said. "I remind them lang na one point at a time lang lagi kasi 'pag nag-look forward kami baka hindi makagalaw nang maayos." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
