Askou 'not happy' with second half at Ochilview
Manager Jens Berthel Askou says he was "not happy" with Motherwell's second-half display as they laboured to another win over a lower-league side at O'Donnell's fortunate back-post finish in the 41st minute proved enough to send the Fir Park side top of their Premier Sports Cup group, but Askou felt his team were too content to sit on their lead at Ochilview. Hugo Ekitike: Liverpool agree £82m deal for Eintracht Frankfurt forward
Liverpool have agreed an £82.3million deal to sign the Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike as the club take their summer spending above £260million. The Premier League champions will pay about £78million plus £4.3million in add-ons for the France Under 21 striker, who will join on a six-year deal. Ekitike will not join the Liverpool squad, who are scheduled to travel to Hong Kong on Sunday night for the start of their ten-day pre-season tour of Asia, but he could join the trip at a later date. They play AC Milan on July 26, before travelling to Japan where they will face Yokohoma F Marinos on July 30. Ekitike scored 22 goals and claimed 12 assists in all competitions last season, helping Frankrurt qualify for the Champions League. He will join fellow new signings Florian Wirtz, the Germany attacking midfielder who cost a club-record £116million from Bayer Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong, the Netherlands right back who cost £29million from the same club, and Milos Kerkez, the Hungary left back who cost £40million from Bournemouth. Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Georgia goalkeeper, has joined in a £29million deal agreed with Valencia last year. They also signed Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman, both goalkeepers. Liverpool have been wanting to sign at least one forward and beat off interest in him from Manchester United and Newcastle United, whose £70million offer was rejected last week. Last week, Newcastle were braced for a £130million offer from Liverpool for their star striker Alexander Isak, but the club have maintained the 25-year old Swede is not for sale. He missed the club's pre-season defeat to Celtic on Saturday. Ekitike, who was an unused sub for Frankfurt in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, came through at Reims and left for Paris St-Germain, initially on loan in 2022. He struggled and joined Eintracht, initially on loan, in February 2024 before a permanent move for £14million last summer. He was linked with Arsenal and Chelsea recently. The Merseyside club look likely to need to make sales. Ekitike's arrival will mean that Liverpool have 25 players over the age of 21, 18 of whom are classed as overseas players. Clubs are permitted to name a maximum 25-man squad, featuring no more than 17 overseas players. Liverpool are expected to sell Darwin Núñez, amid interest from AC Milan and the Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Luis Díaz, who played as a centre forward for part of last season, is wanted by Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The futures of Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are unclear and Diogo Jota died in a car accident this month.
