Slot praises Liverpool teen after Yokohama win but reveals where he must 'learn'
Arne Slot praised Rio Ngumoha for 'impacting the game' and 'showing his quality' against Yokohama FM, but encouraged the youngster to take some key learnings away from Liverpool's 3-1 win. The Premier League champions were forced to come behind after Asahi Uenaka beat Giorgi Mamardashvili from a tight angle ten minutes into the second half at Yokohama's Nissan Stadium. Marquee summer signing Florian Wirtz opened his Liverpool account to equalise just past the hour-mark before second-half substitutes Trey Nyoni and Ngumoha both netted to secure victory. Ngumoha became Liverpool's youngest ever player to feature in an FA Cup match when he made his first-team debut last season and the 16-year-old has been tipped by fans and pundits alike for a bright future on Merseyside. The teenager's sublime solo effort to put Slot's men out of sight in the closing stages was arguably the pick of the goals in Japan, with Liverpool's No.73 setting off on a mazy run from the halfway line before squeezing the ball under Park Il-gyu with a cool finish. The Reds ramp up their preparations for the new campaign with a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao in five days' time and Ngumoha will no doubt be hoping to get some more minutes under his belt in front of a home crowd at Anfield. Asked how happy he was with Ngumoha's impact off the bench, Slot told reporters: 'He wasn't the only one that impacted the game from the bench because Trey Nyoni also scored, assisted by Jeremie Frimpong. 'In the first goal, I think Curtis Jones played a big part by winning the ball in the midfield. 'Rio, again, showed the quality that he has and that's nice for us because we have a lot of very good players, but to get some very good players from the academy is always helpful. It always gives energy to a team as well. 'It's always nice to see players at 17, 18, 19 years old already impacting a game, but there was also a moment in the game where he should have squared it to [Alexis] Mac Allister or Curtis so there are also learning points for him. 'But yeah, if you're 16 and you can impact a game like he did then that's definitely worth a compliment.' Slot was pleased that Liverpool managed to come away from the 'intense' contest with a win, but felt there were certain areas they must look to improve before facing Athletic Bilbao. 'It was a good game against an opponent that is already in the middle of the season and is used to the circumstances over here,' the Liverpool head coach added. 'They made it an intense game for us which is always nice to have in pre-season because this is also what we're looking for. 'What want to have teams that can really compete with us and they were definitely one of them. 'We've seen a few very positive things. For example, coming back after going 1-0 down. It's a thing we did last season a lot of times, seeing players from the bench impacting the game. 'More than a few times, there were very good moments in build-up, but what I also saw in the goal we conceded and in the first half, a big chance we conceded, is that we had to work harder in those moments and that also happened against AC Milan. 'It could be to do with the tough training camp, it could be to do with the heat. But that's something we definitely have to improve towards Bilbao, who we have as our next opponent.' While being immensely proud of Liverpool's success last season, Slot's 'full focus' is now on the upcoming campaign. 'I had quite a long holiday and because we won the league quite early I could enjoy it for quite a long time,' the Dutchman continied. 'But I think the moment we started again, that was also the moment stop thinking about last season. 'You guys can still enjoy it, but we now need to prepare ourselves for the upcoming season and, therefore, there are no moments to enjoy what we did last season. 'Our full focus is now on this season and how I and we prepare for another tough season. 'Last season was already tough, but if you look at what all the Premier League clubs are doing, the Premier League is going to get even stronger than last season. 'We need to be ready for that, that's what my full focus is on at the moment and over the last few weeks. 'We are making steps forward but I also don't forget that I went to Wembley last season and had to look at Newcastle winning a trophy and in two weeks we go there again so I hope we show a different face in that final than we did in the Carabao Cup final.' Refs could wear body cameras in Premier League this season after IFAB approval
The technology is likely to feature in next summer's World Cup and it is understood it could also be offered to broadcasters as part of the Premier League's new domestic television deal. Clubs will need to approve precisely when and how the cameras are used in the coming weeks, but the league has already shown a willingness to innovate in this area, with referee Jarred Gillett wearing a camera during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in May last year. Jarred Gillett wore a camera during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in May last year (Zac Goodwin/PA) The purpose of the trial at the Club World Cup was to see whether it enriched the viewing experience by providing footage from the referee's perspective. Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of FIFA's referees committee, hailed the success of the cameras and said the trial had gone 'beyond expectations'. It therefore seems extremely likely world football's governing body will want to use the cameras in its showpiece national-team tournament next summer. 'We thought it would have been an interesting experience for TV viewers and we've received great comments,' Collina told earlier this month. 'We were asked, 'Why not in all the matches?' and even more, 'Why not in all sports?'. 🎥 The best ref cam moments of the #FIFACWC so far… — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 27, 2025 'We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play. And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees (and) to explain why something was not seen on the field of play.' The cameras highlighted how a handball by an Atletico Madrid defender in their match against Paris St Germain could not be given on-field by the referee because his line of vision was blocked, with the VAR able to alert the official. Competitions wishing to participate in the extended trial will need to seek permission from the IFAB and from FIFA, who will provide detailed recommendations and technical information to help them use the technology effectively. Other enhancements to the Premier League television experience this season include dressing-room access, half-time interviews and in-match interviews with managers or substituted players.

Michael Owen thinks he knows what's happening with Alexander Isak – 'It's sad'
Alexander Isak's potential move to Liverpool is becoming the transfer story of the summer, and Michael Owen thinks he understands what is going through the Swede's mind Michael Owen has dismissed the notion that Alexander Isak's potential move from Newcastle United to Liverpool is motivated by money. The Newcastle striker recently expressed his desire to explore his options away from St James' Park, which put Liverpool on red alert. The Merseysiders initially showed interest in him days before Arne Slot's side signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a whopping £79million. They have already shattered the Premier League transfer record this summer with the £116m signing of Florian Wirtz. However, the Reds may have to break it again if they wish to secure Isak. Sky Sports Switzerland recently claimed Liverpool have reached an agreement for a five-year contract with the Swedish international. While many assume financial gain is the primary factor behind a player's decision to switch clubs, Owen – reflecting on his own move from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2004 – insists that a player like Isak wouldn't be concerned about the monetary aspects of the transfer. In an interview with talkSPORT, Owen also lamented the impact on Premier League competitiveness when players like Isak choose to join top-tier teams rather than helping their current clubs grow. He said: "If any decent player becomes available, the big boys come and eventually they move. "It's sad because you want competition in football, but you put yourself in a player's point of view. If you didn't have ambition, then football would be nothing. You've got one short career trying to win as much as you can, trying to get to the best team. "That's what drives everybody. People will say it's money, it's not. Most footballers just want to be in the best teams, in the best competitions and winning trophies. Unfortunately, this scenario will never, ever change." Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has thus far maintained his conviction that Isak will stay put when the transfer window closes. The Magpies chief said: "He is still our player. "He's contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. "My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year." Ekitike's arrival took Liverpool's summer expenditure to the £300m milestone, marking the first window this threshold has been reached in the club's history. Nevertheless, with Newcastle reportedly slapping a £150m valuation on Isak, the Reds might need to breach the £400m barrier. Liverpool also have additional funds at their disposal this summer, following Luis Diaz's £65m switch to Bayern Munich. Isak has been absent from the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia, with his situation in need of sorting soon. Last year, Isak netted 27 goals and provided six assists in all competitions for Howe's team. His standout moment was when he scored the pivotal second goal for Newcastle in their League Cup final victory over the Reds at Wembley.
