SNL 50 unveils celebrity-filled cast list — but one missing star causes uproar

Independent10-02-2025

Saturday Night Live is preparing to bring the house down with its forthcoming 50th-anniversary special, featuring a stacked cast of comedy legends old and new.
NBC 's long-running late-night sketch show will celebrate the impressive milestone on February 16 with a three-hour special beginning at 8 p.m. EST.
On Monday, the series released a list of former cast members who will once again take the famed 30 Rock stage — with one surprising omission.
In the clip, a car drives along the streets of New York City, passing by massive blue post-it notes bearing the names of the comedy legends who will be returning for the noteworthy occasion.
The cast includes a mix of original cast members such as Laraine Newman, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin and Garrett Morris to more recent alumni Jimmy Fallon, Amy Poehler, Eddie Murphy, Fred Armisen, Molly Shannon, Kristen Wiig, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Pete Davison, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kate McKinnon, Andy Sandberg, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis and Chris Rock.
The special will also feature celebrities who have previously graced the stage as guest hosts: Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, Bad Bunny, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Kim Kardashian, Martin Short, Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Pedro Pascal, Peyton Manning, Quinta Brunson, Robert De Niro, Sabrina Carpenter, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and Woody Harrelson.
While many X/Twitter users reacted joyously to the list of returning stars, others couldn't help but notice a major name was missing from the roster.
'Where is Bill Hader? i want a stefon comeback,' one commented.
'Show us Bill Hader,' a second demanded, while a third added: 'i'm going to crash out if they don't announce bill hader soon.'
'GIVE ME BILL HADER OR GIVE ME DEATH,' another begged.
In the lead-up to the anniversary episode, on Friday, February 14, Peacock will livestream a segment titled SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. Presented by late-night host Fallon, the music special will see performances from Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Bad Bunny, Post Malone and more.
NBC has additionally released a four-part docuseries named SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night Live, which spotlights the audition process, writing, infamous sketches, and the pivotal 11th season.
Last month, the network also aired a documentary special from Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson and Oz Rodriguez called Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music.
SNL first premiered on October 11, 1975, and has aired nearly 1,000 episodes to date, making it one of America's longest-running broadcast network television shows ever.

Glen Powell's ex left 'shattered' after Sydney Sweeney romance claims

Model Gigi Paris has spoke out about the breakdown of a high profile relationship as she split from actor Glen Powell amid rumours of a romance with co-star Sydney Sweeney Gigi Paris has revealed exactly what her ex-boyfriend told her amid rumours he was having an affair with a co-star. The model did not explicitly name her ex when making the claims, yet she was in a high-profile romance with actor Glen Powell for over three years before splitting in 2023. Around the same time as Gigi, 32, and Glen's split, he was promoting his romantic comedy Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and was bombarded with on-set romance rumours. The pair seemed to play into the speculation as they promoted the film, with Glen, 36, admitting the tactic "worked wonderfully". ‌ Fans quickly noticed their intense chemistry, with many pointing out how touchy and flirty they were during interviews. However, Sydney later shut down the speculation while hosting Saturday Night Live, calling the online rumours "disorienting and unfair." ‌ Despite Sydney playing off any connection with Glen, Gigi has spoke about how she coped with intense rumours about a past relationship that is understood to refer to Glen. She admitted to being "blindsided" and "shattered" when claims about her boyfriend hit the headlines. Gigi spoke of an A-list ex, who she did not name, that allegedly brushed off her concerns and told her: "This is what I have to do for my job." She added on the Too Much podcast: "I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder: 'Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she okay with this? What the f***?' "Or stand up for myself and say: 'No, I'm actually not okay with this, and I'm walking away.' So that's what I decided to do." Gigi insisted: "It wasn't a way to monetise the breakup. It wasn't a way to twist the story around. I was shattered, shattered. "I just wanted respect. Especially if it's gonna be public, like don't make an a** out of me. Just don't make a fool out of someone you've been with for over three years, talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know?" The model said the situation was "handled" wrongly and left her feeling "like I was just fed to the dogs" as the publicity stunt unfolded. Gigi revealed her reason for leaving the relationship and added: "I just hit a threshold of what I could take, and I was just so disappointed and that was that." ‌ Gigi hinted at the split from Glen in 2023 in a post on social media that read: "Know your worth & onto the next," in an apparent dig at her actor ex. Following the split, Glen gave Sydney "all the credit" for using the affair rumours to promote their movie. "I don't have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she's very smart. She's very smart," he said at the time. He added to Business Insider that "the only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour." ‌ Glen said: "I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff." The Top Gun star claimed it was "easier" for Sydney as she was "in a very committed and wonderful relationship". Sydney confessed to being "on every call" that involved promoting the film as she said: "I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film, because at the end of the day, they're the ones who created the entire narrative." The actress has finally confirmed this month that she is now single following rumours of the breakdown of her engagement to Jonathan Davino. Confirming her single status, Sydney told The Sunday Times: 'I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it.' Sydney was with Jonathan for seven years, with the pair planning to get married in May. Their wedding was called off and according to Page Six, the split came as she was "extremely busy" with her acting career which brought new added "tension" to their relationship. The Mirror has contacted Glen and Sydney's representatives for comment.

A-list heartthrob new favourite to play next Bond villain

Fans are rejoicing as Pedro Pascal has emerged as the frontrunner to portray the next James Bond villain. The Last of Us and Gladiator 2 star is now the 4/1 favourite, narrowly edging out Cillian Murphy, who trails closely at 5/1, according to online bookmaker Betway. Skyrocketing to fame in the last few years, Pascal's recent run of roles has catapulted him into the global spotlight, making him a tantalising candidate for 007's next adversary. Betway now considers him the most likely star to take on the role, with fans sure to flock to cinemas for a chance to see Pascal's take on a Bond bad guy. 'Pedro Pascal's star power has skyrocketed in recent years,' said Betway spokesperson Mike Reading. 'He's built a global following thanks to standout performances in The Last of Us, Gladiator 2, and even hosting SNL. He is now the 4/1 favourite to take up the mantle of villain in the next James Bond film.' But the odds are growing steeper for the rest of the field. Giancarlo Esposito and Barry Keoghan are both currently sitting at 6/1, while Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron (the highest-ranked female candidate) is listed at 10/1. Further down the list are Stephen Graham, Saoirse Ronan, and Woody Harrelson, each with 16/1 odds. Graham's name has gained traction recently, thanks to his gritty turn in Adolescence, a performance Betway suggests could bring 'a bold new flavour' to the franchise. The next Bond film, now under the full creative control of Amazon MGM, is still in early development, with no confirmed casting announcements. More Trending Fans are also continuing to speculate about who will take on the role of 007 opposite whoever ends up as the newest Bond Villain (fingers crossed it will be Pascal). Six years after Daniel Craig announced his retirement from the franchise, it appears we are no closer to unveiling the next 007. Former favourite Idris Elba, 52, previously ruled himself out from playing the British spy, while other hotly tipped actors, including James Norton and Theo James, have remained coy. The current front-runner to become Bond is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while bookies' Ladbrokes have also given preferential odds to the likes of Henry Cavill, Jack Lowden and Tom Hardy. Got a story? Among the highest paid female podcasters, Cooper is as much a businesswoman as a host. She launched the beverage company Unwell Hydration in 2024 and also has a podcast network called The Unwell Network (home to Madeline Argy and Hallie Batchelder's podcasts). The documentary rewinds us to her awkward teenage years, as well as revelations about her time at university playing soccer and her choice to strike out on her own with a solo venture (she used to co-host the podcast with Sofia Franklyn). The two-part documentary began filming two years ago, as Alex Cooper prepared for her first tour. Delving into her upbringing in Pennsylvania and experience as a D1 soccer player, the series explores her experience in the Boston University field. In the doc, Cooper accuses her former coach of sexual harassment and claims the Boston University athletics officials failed to act on the knowledge. Call Her Alex also recounts her rise to fame with the Call Me Daddy podcast. Originally one half of a duo, Cooper went solo behind the mic in 2020 and signed a $60 million deal with Spotify.
