Germany plans to cut benefits for newly arrived Ukrainian refugees, draft law shows
BERLIN, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Germany's coalition government plans to cut state benefits for newly-arrived Ukrainian refugees, a draft law seen by Reuters showed on Wednesday, which could result in 100 euros ($116)less per month per refugee, according to estimates. Ukrainian refugees arriving in Germany benefit from the European Union's Temporary Protection Directive, which enables them to directly claim welfare benefits without going through the asylum process. Under the draft bill, Ukrainians arriving in Germany from April 1, 2025, would no longer receive Citizen's Allowance but instead receive benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act, which are lower. There are around 1.25 million refugees from Ukraine living in Germany, and around 21,000 entered the country for the first time in connection with the Russian invasion between April 1 and June 30, 2025, according to government figures. The draft law requires cabinet and upper house of parliament approval before coming into effect by the end of the year. Germany has long been debating what level of support Ukrainian refugees should receive, as it struggles to make savings on welfare spending, with Bavarian Premier Markus Soeder on Sunday calling for all Ukrainian refugees, not just new arrivals, to be excluded from the higher benefits. Approximately 64.1% of the labour agency registered Ukrainian nationals in July 2025 were not employed, including those jobless, in courses, or receiving employment-related support. Germany' SEFE allocates 3 TWh of auction volume into Rehden gas storage
FRANKFURT, Aug 6 (Reuters) - German gas company SEFE said on Wednesday it had allocated three terawatt hours (TWh) of natural gas storage space at its northern German Rehden facility, the entire working gas volume it had offered at an auction. "SEFE Storage has allocated the storage capacity of approximately 3 TWh for the remainder of the storage year 2025/2026 in underground storage Rehden on the PRISMA capacity platform," the company said in a statement. Wholesale energy traders are keen to learn whether or not gas reserve-building continues in Germany at sufficient levels ahead of the coming winter, as it is Europe's leading storage location. German storage units at the beginning of this week were 62.5% full, compared with 90% a year ago, internet data from European operator group GIE showed. Of Germany's technically possible gas storage capacity of 248 TWh, Rehden accounts for 45 TWh, and is therefore a useful pointer to the overall picture of stockpiling. SEFE - or Securing Energy for Europe - prior to the auction recorded a volume of 5.5 TWh at Rehden, a filling level of 12%. Rehden has a November 1 filling target of 45% under German energy security provisions. As a so-called porous storage, it takes relatively longer to fill than cavern storage facilities, which represent the bulk of German capacity. On PRISMA, the names of bidders or the size of their allocations are not identified.

Turkish Airlines is preparing binding offer for Spain's Air Europa, executive says
ISTANBUL, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Turkish Airlines ( opens new tab is still very interested in buying a stake in Spanish airline Air Europa and is in the process of preparing a binding offer, a company executive said during an earnings call on Wednesday. "We are preparing to provide a binding offer very soon. However, we have not come to that stage yet. As soon as we have the board approval and board decision we will announce it publicly," the executive said. Turkish Airlines investor relations and financial executives responded to questions on the earnings call. The executive said the main reason for the interest in the Spanish carrier is that its flight network complements that of Turkish Airlines, with a strong presence in Latin America and the Iberian peninsula. On Tuesday, Lufthansa ( opens new tab abandoned its plan to bid for a stake in Air Europa, following Air France-KLM which announced it had pulled out last week. The process has faced delays due in part to disagreements between members of the Hidalgo family, which owns Air Europa, and concerns from interested airlines on the structure of the deal, Reuters previously reported. Air Europa, which flies within Spain and connects Madrid with large Spanish cities in Europe and Latin America, is seeking to raise cash to repay a government loan. The Turkish flag carrier disclosed in June that it was holding non-binding talks over a potential Air Europa investment.
