Creatures found living off gas in Pacific Ocean's deepest trenches

A strange menagerie of creatures living off methane have been found in the darkest depths of the Pacific Ocean.
Spiky white worms and tiny marine snails were filmed picking their way through swaying fields of tube-worms, more than five miles from the surface.
Chinese explorers who visited the area by submarine also found huge beds of clams and large patches of white, snow-like microbial mats.
The waving carpets of worms looked so much like countryside meadows that scientists labelled them 'Cotton Field' and 'Wintersweet Valley', while the blanched microbial mats were dubbed 'Icy River'.
The creatures are all the more remarkable because they live in complete darkness along major fault-lines where two tectonic plates meet, surviving on hydrogen sulfide and methane produced by seismic activity.
The Kuril–Kamchatka Trench, formed by the Pacific Plate moving beneath the Okhotsk Plate, was the site of this week's earthquake which sent tsunami waves crashing onto the shores of the US and Japan.
It is not known how the newly-discovered creatures have been impacted by the earthquake.
The new expedition covered more than 1,500 miles, exploring the trench at depths ranging from 3.6 miles to 5.9 miles beneath the surface.
It was led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering who said finding a 'flourishing' community in such a hostile environment made it likely similar ecosystems were thriving in other harsh environments.
The team says it now wants to find out how life manages to survive in the high pressure environments of hadal trenches – the very deep fissures at the bottom of oceans. It has collected a number of samples to study in the lab.
Co-lead author on the study, Xiatong Peng, from China's Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Science, said: 'Hadal trenches, some of the Earth's least explored and understood environments have long been proposed to harbour chemosynthesis-based communities.
'Yet, despite increasing attention, actual documentation of such communities has been exceptionally rare.'
'Here we report the discovery of the deepest and the most extensive chemosynthesis-based communities known to exist on Earth.
'Given geological similarities with other hadal trenches, such chemosynthesis-based communities might be more widespread than previously anticipated.'
Creatures that exist in such inhospitable locations are known as 'extremophiles' and they were first discovered living in hydrothermal vents in the 1980s.
Trawls from the region had pulled up chemical-eating worms, but it is the first time that such a diverse and thriving living community has been found living at such depths.
The communities are dominated by marine tube-worms called siboglinid polychaetes and molluscs called bivalves, which synthesise their energy using hydrogen sulfide and methane seeping out of faults in the tectonic plate.
Further analysis suggests that the methane seeping out of the cracks is made by microbial processes in organic matter found in sediments.
The images were taken by the manned submersible equipped with a high-definition camera system.
The research was published in the journal Nature.

An outbreak of the chikungunya virus in China has prompted authorities to take preventive measures from mosquito nets and clouds of disinfectant, threatening fines for people who fail to disperse standing water and even deploying drones to hunt down insect breeding grounds. More than 7,000 cases of the disease have been reported as of Wednesday, focused largely on the manufacturing hub of Foshan near Hong Kong, which has reported only one case. Numbers of new cases appear to be dropping slowly, according to authorities. Chikungunya is spread by mosquitoes and causes fever and joint pain, similar to dengue fever, with the young, older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions most at risk. Chinese state television has shown workers spraying clouds of disinfectant around city streets, residential areas, construction sites and other areas where people may come into contact with virus-bearing mosquitos that are born in standing water. Workers sprayed some places before entering office buildings, a throwback to China's controversial hardline tactics used to battle the COVID-19 virus. People who do not empty bottles, flower pots or other outdoor receptacles can be subject to fines of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,400) and have their electricity cut off. The U.S. has issued a travel advisory telling citizens not to visit China's Guangdong province, the location of Donguan and several other business hubs, along with countries such as Bolivia and island nations in the Indian Ocean. Brazil is among the othe rcountries hit hard by the virus. Heavy rains and high temperatures have worsened the crisis in China, which is generally common in tropical areas but came on unusually strong this year. China has become adept at coercive measures that many nations consider over-the-top since the deadly 2003 SARS outbreak. This time, patients are being forced to stay in hospital in Foshan for a minimum of one week and authorities briefly enforced a two-week home quarantine, which was dropped since the disease cannot be transmitted between people. Reports also have emerged of attempts to stop the virus spread with fish that eat mosquito larvae and even larger mosquitos to eat the insects carrying the virus. Meetings have been held and protocols adopted at the national level in a sign of China's determination to eliminate the outbreak and avoid public and international criticism.

Researchers operating a remotely controlled vehicle, filming life 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) beneath the surface, have admitted they never anticipated their unusual deep-sea mission would become a social media phenomenon. Their live video feed has garnered over 1.6 million daily views on YouTube, dominated national television news, and even ignited a significant public debate regarding the defunding of Argentine scientific research under the libertarian President Javier Milei. "It was a huge surprise for us," said expedition leader Daniel Lauretta. "It's something that fills our hearts because we want to spread the word." Equipped with high-definition cameras and advanced sensors, the autonomous robot is, for the first time, revealing the enigmatic organisms of Mar de Plata's submarine canyon with unprecedented clarity and intricate detail. State-backed science organizations have lost 4,000 positions in the last year and a half — a combination of layoffs, frozen contracts and resignations over poor working conditions and low pay. Conicet suffered a 21 per cent budget cut in real terms last year. Salaries for Conicet researchers have lost 35 per cent of their value. Many warn that the measures are setting off a brain drain. Seizing on the surge of public excitement about Conicet, researchers have called for a 48-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday to draw attention to their plight. Although Milei has not commented on the livestream, his allies have expressed disdain. 'They should livestream an offshore drilling operation instead,' said Alejandro Álvarez, an official in Milei's government, referring to growing crude production in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation – an oil boom that Milei hopes can help revive the nation's crisis-stricken economy. 'It's a beautiful process of wealth creation and natural resource exploitation that will make Argentina greater." In the meantime, Argentines seem content to be mesmerized by orange starfish.
