Clemson run-rules USC Upstate in the Tigers' opener of the Clemson Regional
Kylee Johnson is quickly becoming the go-to bat in the biggest moments for Clemson softball.
Just a week after her walk-off home run stunned Florida State in the ACC Championship Game, Johnson once again came through in a pressure spot—this time with a three-run blast that helped lift No. 11 Clemson to a 10-2 run-rule win over USC Upstate on Friday at McWhorter Stadium. The Tigers are now one win away from advancing out of the Clemson Regional.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth and two runners on with two outs, Johnson sent a 2-2 changeup over the wall in left field to give Clemson the lead for good.
'I was just trying to pick up my teammates,' Johnson said. 'I wasn't trying to do anything big, just trying to get something going. We all trust each other one through nine, and I knew I had to come through.'
The homer was all reliever Brooke McCubbin would need. After entering with the bases loaded in the third and one run already in, she settled in and shut the door. McCubbin gave up just one hit over the final 4.1 innings to earn her 17th win of the season.
Head coach John Rittman admitted he wasn't sure if Johnson's blast would clear the fence.
'I was blowing it out,' Rittman joked. 'I didn't know if it was going to make it or not. The one in the ACC title game was a no-doubter, but this one—man, I was watching the flags. But she's battled all year and really deserves this moment. She's such a good teammate and works her tail off.'
JoJo Collins added a big day at the plate as well, giving Clemson a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single. She also helped spark the offense with steady at-bats and timely contact.
'I was definitely a little nervous early,' Collins said. 'But our focus all year has been trusting each other. That's what helped me slow the moment down and get the job done.'
After USC Upstate briefly pulled ahead with a two-run third inning, Clemson responded quickly. Maddie Moore tied the game with a double to left-center that scored Alex Brown, setting the stage for Johnson's go-ahead swing in the fifth.
Reese Basinger started the game and got out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the second with a clutch strikeout. But after the Spartans loaded the bases again in the third and scratched across two runs, McCubbin entered to stop the bleeding and took over from there.
Clemson's offense poured it on late, scoring five in the fifth and adding two more in the sixth to close things out in run-rule fashion.
The Tigers now sit at 35-17 overall and will play in Saturday's regional final with a shot to move on to the Super Regionals.

CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Brad Brownell's Tigers will take on coach Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa in the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge. An official date and start time were not announced. The matchup will be a rematch of teams who met twice during the 2023-24 season, including in the West Region final of NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles on March 30, 2024. After defeating New Mexico, No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Arizona in the tournament, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history, and the first since 1980. Clemson fell to Alabama, 89-82, at Arena (Staples Center), denying the Tigers their first trip to a Final Four. Prior to that, Clemson and Alabama met four months earlier on Nov. 28 in Tuscaloosa, an 85-77 Tigers victory in the 2023 ACC/SEC Challenge. Last year, Clemson smothered No. 4 Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge for a 70-66 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Dec. 3 behind 11 points and 20 rebounds from Ian Schieffelin. Guard Jaeden Zackery led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, and fans stormed the court after the victory. Clemson finished 27-7 overall last season and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Alabama went 28-9 overall and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final Coaches Poll. Mizzou's New RB Transfer Expected to Make Immediate Impact

Mizzou's New RB Transfer Expected to Make Immediate Impact originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mizzou's newest addition to the backfield is already turning heads ahead of the 2025 season. Ahmad Hardy, a running back transfer from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, committed to the Tigers last December. He enters Columbia as the highest-graded returning SEC running back for 2025, according to Pro Football Focus. The Mississippi native was one of the most sought-after backs in the transfer portal, receiving interest from SEC programs like Ole Miss and Kentucky. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 6 running back in this year's transfer portal class. Advertisement Ultimately, Hardy said the decision to choose Missouri felt natural. 'I feel like Mizzou was home,' Hardy said. 'They were saying the right stuff, and the coaches and staff, they did their job. And the players, they welcomed me in.' The 5-foot-10, 210-pound back fills a critical need for the Tigers after the departures of Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll, who combined for 1,413 rushing yards in 2024. Their production helped Mizzou to a 10-3 finish and a Music City Bowl win over Iowa. Advertisement He earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-Sun Belt honors, topping 100 rushing yards in eight of his 12 games and scoring in all but two. He also caught eight passes for 72 yards, showing his versatility out of the backfield. Perhaps most impressively, Hardy forced 94 missed tackles, the second-most in the nation behind All-American and Heisman contender Ashton Jeanty. Known for his tough, physical running style, Hardy is a natural fit for Missouri's wide-zone offensive scheme—one he already thrived in at ULM. 'We run outside zone like I did at my old school,' Hardy said. 'So I feel like I'm perfecting my craft." Advertisement Hardy is already emerging as one of Mizzou's most intriguing breakout candidates for the fall, and a name fans will want to keep an eye on.
