But now it can be revealed that businessman Dev Alahan will be back - and soon.
Actor Jimmi Harkishin has resumed filming after his break and he will be back on screen next week.
Jimmi, 59, first joined the cobbles in 1999 playing the bumbling corner shopkeeper.
Earlier this year Dev received some bad news about his Aunt Gita and rushed off to abroad to help care for her.
He told Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) that his Aunt Gita has had a fall and he needs to go abroad.
Leaving son Aadi in control of his businesses, Dev jetted off alone.
And while he's been away Aadi has got himself into trouble.
Last month Aadi accidentally spiked Lauren Bolton with drugs that led to her suffering horrifying hallucinations of Joel.
And things are only set to get worse as next week Aadi shouts as a masked robber dashes out of the corner shop.
In the street, Lisa freezes and Carla's puzzled by lack of action.
Later Aadi tells Asha how the lad threatened him with a wrench and forced him to empty the safe.
Asha assures him it's not his fault and he's the victim of a crime.
As he tells PC Jess what happened, Aadi explains the robber made off with £6k in cash but at least they're insured.
But Bernie clocks his shifty demeanour, and worries there's more to this than Aadi's letting on.
Suddenly the door flies open and Dev barrels in wondering what he's missed.

Water sports park shut as police launch urgent search for missing woman in Cheshire
A water sports park has been shut as police search for a missing woman last seen in a petrol station in Cheshire. Cheshire Police are appealing for help from the public to find Rachel Booth, 38, who was reported missing on Saturday 19 July after last being seen in the Barnton area of Northwich. She was last sighted at around 3.50am on Saturday at the Sandiway Garage on the A556. She is described as 5' 9' tall, of a slim build, with blonde hair, and is believed to be wearing black leggings and a black top. A spokesman for Cheshire Police told the Northwhich Guardian that officers were conducting enquiries in the village of Oakmere as part of their enquiries. A nearby water-sports park, Wildshore Delamere, said it was closed until further notice due to 'ongoing police investigations in the surrounding area'. A notice on their website read: 'We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. 'The incident is unrelated to Wild Shore - however we wish to help as much as possible. 'If your booking is affected by this closure, please contact our customer services team or head online to your account. We'll be happy to arrange a refund or reschedule your session for a later date. Thank you for your understanding.' Inspector James Wilson said: 'We are currently conducting a number of enquiries to trace Rachel and we are becoming increasingly concerned for her welfare. 'Anyone who has seen Rachel since she was reported missing is asked to contact us. The same goes for anyone who has any information on her whereabouts. 'We would also like to appeal directly to Rachel to get in touch to let us know you are OK. You can report information to Cheshire Police via 101 or through quoting IML-2136439.

Man, 31, held on suspicion of murder after elderly couple killed in house fire
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an elderly couple died in a fire at their home in St Helens. Merseyside Police said. Peter Eric Greener, 77, known as Eric, died on July 16 and his partner Sheila Jackson, 83, died on July 17 following the fire at their home on South John Street in the early hours of Tuesday. A force spokesperson said an accelerant was used to start the blaze. The 31-year-old man from St Helens was arrested in the early hours of Sunday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning. Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, senior investigating officer, said: 'Although an arrest has been made, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to pass on information directly to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers, and not to comment or post in any way which jeopardises this ongoing work. 'Extensive inquiries continue, and to that end we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly if you live in the area of South John Street and recall seeing or hearing anything suspicious at around the time of the incident. 'Please do not assume what you know has already been reported to us, as we can quickly make that assessment.' On Friday, pictures of the couple, including one showing Mr Greener with his arm around Ms Jackson, were released by their families through police. Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath said last week it was 'sickening' and 'a truly shocking incident' and everyone in Merseyside would be 'utterly appalled' at what had happened.

Love Island's Harrison in surprise SNUB to Lauren after having sex with her and quitting the villa
LOVE Island's Harrison Solomon has surprised fans by not following Lauren Wood on Instagram after leaving the villa together. Although the pair slept together during their time on the show, Harrison, 22, is not yet following Lauren, 26, despite her already following him. 4 While the footballer returned to the UK recently and is believed to have his phone back, he may not have full control of his social media accounts yet. The unexpected 'snub' has led to speculation about the status of their relationship after the show. Harrison previously insisted he does not regret having sex in the villa – but hopes his parents weren't watching. The sportsman decided to leave the show on Thursday after being involved in a dramatic love triangle with Lauren Wood and Toni Laites. Viewers were shocked when he was seen making a plea to re-couple with Las Vegas cabana server Toni, despite bedding Lauren the night before. But Harrison, from Burton upon Trent but now based in Miami, said he has no regrets about taking things to the next level on TV. Asked how he felt about his mum and dad knowing what he had done, he said: 'I hope they didn't see. But listen, it was a natural thing. 'I don't think I intended to have sex in the villa, but in there all the Islanders could tell we were so attracted to each other. Naturally, it was going to happen. 'The spark between us was crazy. I probably wasn't thinking about my parents and them watching it, but it naturally happened and I don't regret it.' Lauren, who works as a dog walker in York, was booted from the villa on Wednesday night. She begged Harrison to follow and, 24 hours later, he made the choice to go. Tonight, fans of the series will see the pair reunite on the spin-off show, Aftersun. Speaking about Lauren, Harrison said: 'We will make the distance work. It will be no issue. 'We left on good terms, but the two days prior to leaving, we weren't talking properly. 'So it would be good to have a conversation, get everything out in the open and hopefully we move forward from there. 'I feel very strongly about the girl. 'I wouldn't have left if I didn't. 'I have no doubt in my mind that she'll be my girlfriend one day. I'm buzzing to see her and reunite. She's such a great girl.' Meanwhile, Harrison said he would be 'mortified' if someone treated his sister the way he acted towards Toni. He revealed: 'I'd like to think we could be friends. I did her wrong a few times in there, so I understand if she doesn't want to reciprocate that. 'The conversation prior to me leaving was a big moment for me and her. I reflected on my whole situation throughout the day, I just let it out. 'You could tell by me getting emotional, I was upset about how I've acted and upset about Toni being upset as well. 'Similarly, if someone treated my sister like I'd treated Toni in there, obviously I'd be mortified. 'I wanted to apologise to her and I think she could see I was being genuine. 'I'm happy with how things were left.' Aside from Toni and Lauren, Harrison also explored connections with air hostess Helena Ford and Shakira Khan in the villa. Harrison said: 'Normally, I say I live life with no regrets. 'But the way I went about certain situations, I definitely would have handled it differently on reflection. 'Should have been more honest' 'I feel like I would've taken myself away from the situation for a day or two and just really figured out what I wanted. 'I would've had those awkward conversations just to let people know where my head was at. I do shy away from those conversations on the outside. 'Especially here, I should have been more honest. 'It was for the greater good, and it would have stopped people's feelings from getting hurt. 'People were hurt more by me being so indecisive and trying to avoid awkward conversations.
