McGarry makes move to Brisbane Roar

James McGarry will leave Aberdeen for "a fresh start" with A-League side Brisbane Roar after a "difficult" two years at Pittodrie.
The left-back made just 28 appearances since joining in 2023, due in large part to Jack MacKenzie's form, and spent the second half of last season on loan to Athens Kallithea.

The 27-year-old New Zealand cap scored one Dons goal - against Dumbarton in last season's League Cup group stage - and leaves with the "best wishes" of manager Jimmy Thelin.
"A culmination of frustrating injuries and the form of Jack made life a little difficult for James, but I have never had any complaints about his attitude or professionalism," Thelin said.
"Sometimes things just don't quite go the way everyone plans when a player makes a move, and I think that is the case here.
"He has a lot of experience in the A-League, and with a fresh start, I am sure he'll do well there."

The dog ate my passport: Family pooch dogs rookie's All Blacks call-up

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rookie Leroy Carter was still coming to terms with his inclusion in the All Blacks squad to play in Argentina in the opening rounds of the Rugby Championship when he made the shocking discovery. 'The dog ate my passport.' The utility back with the Hamilton-based Chiefs was one of four uncapped players included in Scott Robertson's Championship squad. The phone call from Robertson informing him of his selection had come as a massive surprise. Carter was rushing to get things together for the squad's assembly and departure when he realized the family dog had intercepted his passport. 'I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the (team) manager and I just left it on my bedside table,' Carter said. 'My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it's gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners. 'It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it's all (sorted) now. I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it.' The All Blacks squad leaves Friday to play Argentina in Cordoba on Aug. 17 and Buenos Aires a week later in the first two rounds of the Rugby Championship which also includes Australia and South Africa. ___ AP rugby:

Former Sixers big man Richaun Holmes signs deal with Panathinaikos

Richaun Holmes has had a solid 10 years in the league since the Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the No. 37 pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He has career averages of 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds while being a solid contributor everywhere he's been. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 156 games with the Sixers across three seasons. He was a solid backup to Joel Embiid and went on to make contributions for the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, and Washington Wizards, but he is now headed overseas. Holmes has agreed to a deal with Panathinaikos that will make him one of the highest-paid players in EuroLeague as he continues his basketball career. As Holmes continues to grow as a player, he will likely look for his next NBA opportunity. Playing overseas is a good chance for him to continue growing and then earn another shot in the league.
