Call for action to protect prison officers ‘before there is a fatality'
One officer at HMP Woodhill near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, was slashed in the neck and ear with an improvised weapon on Tuesday, and needed hospital treatment, the Prison Officers' Association said.
In a second incident another inmate assaulted a member of staff, the POA said.
Four officers in total needed hospital treatment but were discharged on Tuesday.
At Gartree prison in Leicestershire, a female officer was left with a broken bone after an inmate faked a seizure and threw a TV at her colleague.
Geoff Willetts, from the POA, said that at HMP Woodhill: 'A prisoner was told to return to his cell, this resulted in a specialist officer being slashed with an improvised weapon, sustaining injuries to the neck and ear.
'The officer attended hospital where they required stitches and surgical glue applied to their injuries.'
He added: 'Meanwhile at Gartree Prison, Market Harborough, staff attended a medical emergency where a prisoner faked an epileptic fit.
'A prison officer who attended to assist was assaulted then had a TV thrown at him and a female officer sustained a broken arm.'
The POA repeated calls for boosted protection for prison officers.
POA general secretary Steve Gillan said: 'Escalating levels of violence are out of control in the prison service in England and Wales.
'It is clear prison regimes must be reviewed as a matter of urgency. We need action to protect prison officers before there is a fatality.'
Thames Valley Police said they were investigating an attack on a member of staff at HMP Woodhill.
Leicestershire Police has been approached for comment.
A prison service spokesperson said: 'Officers at HMP Woodhill attended hospital yesterday following two separate incidents. All were discharged on the same day.
'We will do whatever is necessary to keep our staff safe.
'The Lord Chancellor has announced a review into protective body armour and a trial of Tasers in jails to better respond to serious incidents and will update shortly.'

Man admits murder of customer who was stabbed in bank
A man has admitted the murder of a customer who was stabbed in a bank in Derby. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur appeared at Derby Crown Court on Thursday charged with the murder of Gurvinder Singh Johal, who died after the stabbing in Lloyds Bank in St Peter's Street on May 6. Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, entered a guilty plea in front of Judge Shaun Smith KC and sentencing was set for October 29, a court official confirmed. 'This was a truly shocking crime, committed in broad daylight in a busy city centre bank. 'While the whole community has been affected by this happening in their midst, our thoughts and profound sympathies are with Mr Johal's family, friends and loved ones. 'They have had a much-loved husband, father and son snatched from them by this senseless crime.' In a tribute to the Derby Telegraph after Mr Johal's death, Ajit Atwal, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council, who knew the victim, said: 'He was a good businessman and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. 'He was humble, quiet and a kind guy and would always go above and beyond for everyone. 'His family are devastated and cannot understand what has happened.'

HOMES have been evacuated and a residential street cordoned off after chemicals and "other items" were discovered in a raid. Lincolnshire Police warned of an "ongoing incident" in Waddingham village and evacuated residents after making the discovery. They put a 100 metre cordon in place as they dispose of "chemicals and other items". A 18-year-old man was arrested after police found the items. Cops had attended the property to execute a warrant earlier today. People have been warned to avoid the area as specialist teams work to dispose of the items. A statement on Facebook reads: "We are putting a 100mt cordon in place in the area surrounding The Wolds in Waddingham following the discovery of chemicals and other items at a property which need to be disposed of safely. "The discovery was made following a planned warrant carried out earlier today, and an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. "People living in the affected area will be moved to a nearby location while the incident is resolved, which is underway now. "There is not believed to be a wider risk to public, but this is an ongoing operation at present, and we're asking people to avoid the area while the emergency services and specialist teams work." 1

'Beloved' grandfather dies after Bridgend motorcycle crash
