Ringgit rises on stronger odds of US rate cut
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Friday, extending gains, after US economic data strengthened expectations of an imminent interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2205/4.2405 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2340/4.2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said US initial jobless claims increased more than expected to 226,000 last week, above market forecasts of 221,000. He said the increase marked a second consecutive weekly rise, supporting views that signs of labour market weakness are emerging, even though federal open market committee members believe more data is needed before their September meeting. 'Notwithstanding that, the US Dollar Index fell 0.09% to 98,084 points as the odds of a September rate cut are rising,' he told Bernama. On the domestic front, Afzanizam said the ringgit could remain supported after coming under selling pressure in yesterday's afternoon session. 'Expect the ringgit against the US dollar to hover around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he added. The ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.8750/2.8888 from 2.8732/2.8765 on Thursday and weakened against the British pound to 5.6770/5.7039 from 5.6596/5.6656. It, however, strengthened against the euro to 4.9283/4.9516 from 4.9411/4.9463. Against regional peers, the local unit was firmer. It edged up against the Singapore dollar to 3.2906/3.3064 from 3.2973/3.3013 and appreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0653/13.1346 from 13.0954/13.1146. The ringgit also gained against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.44 from 7.42/7.44 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.4 from 259.9/260.3.

Industry concerns emerge as Gig Workers Bill set for parliamentary reading
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — Industry players are warning the government against rushing the Gig Workers Bill through Parliament this month, saying the legislation should not proceed without first establishing a dedicated commission to oversee the sector. Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, managing partner at think tank MYmobility, questioned the urgency and called for the immediate establishment of the Malaysia Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) to lead regulation and policy development. He argued that pushing the Bill ahead of SEGiM's formation is 'putting the cart before the horse' and risks introducing a flawed framework that fails to reflect the industry's realities, Scoop reported. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently announced the first reading of the Bill will take place on August 14, with a second reading and debate scheduled on August 26. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said the Bill, developed after consultations with over 3,000 workers, is intended to offer social protection to 1.12 million gig workers and has received positive feedback internationally. Some platform operators remain uneasy, however, saying the Bill's content has not been shared and appears disconnected from day-to-day operational challenges. Rahman Hussin, head of business development at Kiddocare, urged the government to release the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA), saying businesses need clarity on compliance costs and the feasibility of implementing mandatory Perkeso deductions. Jalludin Abu Hassan, director of rural-focused Halo Delivery, echoed concerns over financial strain, warning that high compliance costs could force smaller firms to shut down and leave the market dominated by large corporations.
