Tasting Massachusetts' only gold medal beer

Axios23-05-2025
I recently paid a visit to the brewer of the only gold medal-winning beer in Massachusetts, Lost Shoe Brewing & Roasting Co., to sample their taps.
Why it matters: The Marlborough brewery's Size 6 was named the best Belgian-style dubbel beer at this year's World Beer Cup.
Of note: Boston Beer Co.'s Samuel Adams Summer Ale won a bronze medal in the fruit wheat beer category this year.
What we drank: To see what all the fuss was about, I got a 10-ounce pour of the Size 6, the brewery's flagship Belgian, for $7.
It's 7.5% ABV, so be careful, because this sucker is very, very smashable.
Even though it's medium-bodied, the Size 6 had flavor to spare with some sweetness resembling caramel.
From there, the Post Road Detour cream ale was the next logical choice for a $7 can pour.
It won a 2022 US Beer Open gold medal.
It's got a lighter body, but still packs in the flavor at 5.5%
Since you'll likely have to drive home from Marlborough, turn things down a bit with the 3.3% Shoemaker's English dark mild for $7.50 for the 20-ounce glass.

Enhanced Games (no drug testing) signs its first female athlete, world-champion swimmer Megan Romano

The Olympic-style sports venture that will run an event next year with no drug testing signed world-champion swimmer Megan Romano as its first female and first American athlete Thursday. The Enhanced Games will debut next May in Las Vegas, featuring swimming, track and weightlifting competitions in an event that will allow athletes to use performance enhancers. Romano calls competing in the event "an opportunity to push the boundaries of human performance in a transparent and scientifically-backed environment, and to compete on a stage where female athletes are valued and compensated fairly. equally. I believe this is the future of sport.' The Enhanced Games will offer a prize purse of $500,000 for each event with $1 million bonuses going to anyone who breaks a world record in the 100-meter sprint (track) and 50-meter freestyle (swimming). Those marks would not count as 'official,' because world records need to be ratified by international federations, which require record-breakers to pass doping tests. The International Olympic Committee has condemned the concept of the Enhanced Games, saying, "If you want to destroy any concept of fair play and fair competition in sport, this would be a good way to do it.' Romano, a standout swimmer at Georgia in college, anchored the U.S. 4x100 freestyle relay team to a gold medal at world championships in 2013. ___

New York Liberty sign former WNBA Finals MVP Emma Meesseman after long hiatus

The defending WNBA champions have officially added a former WNBA Finals MVP to their roster with fewer than six weeks to go until the playoffs. The New York Liberty announced on Friday, Aug. 1, that they have signed Belgian star Emma Meesseman, who is returning to the WNBA for the first time she was an All-Star in 2022 with the Chicago Sky. The versatile 6-foot-4 forward led Fenerbahçe in Instanbul, Turkey to two EuroLeague championships, led the Belgium national team to two EuroBasket titles and won three-consecutive EuroLeague MVPs during her hiatus from the WNBA. Meesseman, 32, is expected to make her debut with the Liberty on Friday in the first of two-consecutive regular season games against the last-place Connecticut Sun. Her addition brings another well-known playmaker to a roster that already featured Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. 'Emma Meesseman's return to the WNBA is a tremendous moment for our league, and the fact that she chose New York for her next chapter speaks volumes,' Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement. 'She is one of the most skilled, intelligent and unselfish players in the world and her presence elevates everyone around her. Emma brings invaluable experience, championship pedigree and a unique versatility that fits seamlessly into our group as we continue our relentless pursuit of a title in 2025.' Meesseman averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game over the past three seasons in club and international competition and should help immediately with Stewart currently out indefinitely with a bone bruise in her knee. Meesseman averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in 2022 with the Sky. She was drafted by the Washington Mystics in 2013 and won WNBA Finals MVP during the franchise's championship run in 2019. Current Liberty guard Natasha Cloud was also a member of that title team. The Liberty, who are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, have 18 regular-season games remaining and sit in second place behind the Minnesota Lynx. The Liberty lost to Minnesota in their most recent outing on Wednesday, July 30.

But the games have built some momentum and raised money in the 'double-digit millions,' according to founder Aron D'Souza. Four male swimmers, including Olympic medalist James Magnussen of Australia, have committed to the games. Romano, a standout swimmer at Georgia in college, anchored the U.S. 4x100 freestyle relay team to a gold medal at world championships in 2013. ___ AP sports:
