Hong Kong defender's debut pride amid mental challenges and career uncertainty

Hong Kong's newest international footballer, Clement Benhaddouche, said his shock debut against China on Tuesday had come amid the 'most uncertain period of my career'.
Currently without a club, the defender was keeping fit by training daily with a friend in Happy Valley when he received the invite to South Korea.
The 29-year-old had been cut from an original 28-man squad, as Hong Kong opted to travel to the East Asian Championship with 24 players, rather than the permitted 26. He arrived on Saturday to cover Shinichi Chan's return to Shanghai Shenhua, then found himself 'thrown in at the deep end' 72 hours later, following a first-half injury to Yue Tze-nam in Hong Kong's 1-0 defeat.
'I wasn't expecting the call to come, so I was a little bit surprised,' Benhaddouche, who was told he would be needed in the middle of last week, said. 'I was the 25th guy, and Shinichi getting called back left a spot open for me.
'Everything was a bit last minute. I did the best I could in unusual circumstances, coming from an off-season and having not known if I was going to be in the squad, but trying to stay fit.

'On top of that, we faced a hungry China team … with players in the middle of their seasons. Coming up against their in-form winger [18-year-old Wang Yudong] wasn't easy, but I tried to do the best with what I had.'

Artistic swimmer Xu Huiyan claims China's first gold of World Aquatics Championships

Artistic swimmer Xu Huiyan claimed China's first gold of the World Aquatics Championships, continuing her dominance of the women's solo technical event on Saturday. The 19-year-old, who comfortably qualified first for the final, was again too good for her rivals, posting a score of 272.9917 at the WAC Arena in Singapore. Vasilina Khandoshka, who qualified second, took silver with 260.5416, and Spain's Iris Tio Casas' 260.2917 was good enough for bronze. The gold medal was Xu's first at a world championships, and came on the back of the five she won at the World Cup Super Final last month. 'It feels pretty emotional, because something I hoped for but hadn't dared to think about before is now a reality before me,' she said. Xu said helping China qualify for the team event earlier had calmed her nerves. Photo: EPA 'When I was waiting in the call room for my turn, it was quite nerve-racking. But after I started my routine, I felt calmer.'

Hong Kong striker Michael Udebuluzor sacked by China club 24 hours after signing contract

Hong Kong striker Michael Udebuluzor has confirmed his time with Suzhou Dongwu was over before it started, after the club announced it had 'terminated the player's reporting process'. Days of rumour and speculation ended late on Friday, when the mainland club finally commented on a situation sparked by Udebuluzor calling Chinese supporters 'b******s' after after his side's 1-0 defeat to China in the East Asian Football Championship on Tuesday. In response, the 21-year-old was subjected to extreme racial abuse by some supporters on social media, while others called for the China League One club to cancel a contract signed just 24 hours earlier. On Friday, Suzhou published a post on their official WeChat page announcing the signing of two new players. In the comments, one user asked: 'What about Michael?' In response, the club said it had 'terminated the player's reporting process to the team on July 16, and will handle the follow-up in accordance with the law, regulations and contractual agreement'. Pickleball is experiencing rapid growth across Asia, gaining popularity in countries including China, Japan and Thailand. Invented in the 1960s by American businessman and politician Joel Pritchard, who went on to become the lieutenant governor of the US state of Washington, pickleball is at once tennis and ping pong, and everything in between. The name of the game has more to do with the 'pickle boat' in the sport of rowing, reflecting its patrician origins, rather than with processed cabbages and cucumbers. In Malaysia, many purpose-built pickleball recreational centres have sprung up, with attached restaurants, cafes and shops, reflecting the social aspect of the sport. Pickleball is a racket sport invented by an American that has become popular in Asia. An entire industry, involving venues, coaches, equipment and apparel, has grown within the last year or so, buoyed by the increasing popularity of the sport. It is even making inroads in schools.
