Ballycogley Drama Group set to perform extra shows ahead of All Ireland finals in Athlone
What a year for Ballycogley players as their 50th anniversary celebrations are rocketed to a fantastic start with the group having qualified for the RTE All Ireland Open Finals in Athlone.
At last week's draw for performance slots team Ballycogley were drawn to perform their much loved play 'Lend Me A Tenor' on opening night of the festival.
Ahead of this the group, having already sold out the O' Reilly Theatre at the National Opera House, have released their final pre All Ireland performance dates in Gorey Little Theatre on Thursday May 1 and in the Jerme Hynes Theatre at the National Opera House on Monday and Tuesday May 5 and 6.
Lend Me a Tenor by Ken Ludwig is a fast-paced madcap comedy set in 1934 Cleveland. The plot revolves around a world-famous Italian opera singer, Tito Merelli who is scheduled to perform in a production of Pagliacci.
When their star tenor unexpectedly goes missing, a timid assistant in the company, Max is thrust into the spotlight as his unlikely replacement after he is coerced into impersonating Tito to save the show.
What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic misunderstandings, and hilarious chaos behind the scenes.
Full of fast-paced action and over-the-top characters, the play is a delightful farce that keeps audiences laughing from start to finish.
To qualify for the All-Ireland Finals the group have contested preliminary qualifying festivals all over the country and having travelled to Kilmuckridge, Castleblayney, West Clare, West Waterford, South Leinster New Ross, Shercock and Wexford drama festivals the group secured maximum marks seeing them qualify alongside eight other groups from around Ireland, including two others from Co. Wexford.
The play, directed by Pat Whelan, stars Sean Carthy, Catherine Stafford, Edward Hayden, Chris Maddock, Trish Boyce, Catherine Murphy, Fr. Pat Mernagh, Siobhan Murphy and is stage managed by Celine Tracey. Nick Hayes, Cian Cassidy, and Eddie Milbourne look after the lighting for the production with the sound scape in the capable hands of Laura Hayes and Nick Whelan.
Costumes, hair and set design are all curated by Catherine Stafford. Many other stalwart group members are ably leading front of house, set building and backstage to support the production.
Speaking about the production, Sean Carthy, Chairperson of the Ballycogley Players, said: 'It's an immense honour for Ballycogley Players to be heading back to the RTE All Ireland finals for a second consecutive year and is testament to the work invested in this production by our fantastic director Pat Whelan and the very hard working cast and crew.

300-year-old violin to star at UK music festival
One of the most valuable violins in the world, crafted three centuries ago and once owned by composer Niccolo Paganini, is to be played at a top UK classical music festival. The violin, known as the Carrodus, is one of only around 150 made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu known to have survived down the centuries, and was acquired by a philanthropic group for $20 million in June. It was crafted in 1743 in Cremonia, northern Italy, and will be played for the first time as part of the BBC Proms by South Korean violinist Inmo Yang. The violin once owned by Italian virtuoso Paganini will be seen on 28 August at London's Royal Albert Hall. "I can't believe how lucky I am to have this instrument. This is easily one of the greatest instruments ever made," Yang, who is also making his debut at the Proms, said. "I feel a duty to take good care of the instrument and make a beautiful sound, so that people know that it's worth playing these instruments rather than having them in a vault in a museum." The Stretton Society, a network of philanthropists, patrons and sponsors that has loaned the violin to Yang, seeks to acquire rare and valuable instruments to lend to the world's leading musicians. Guarneri was one of the most important violin makers of all time, alongside Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari, said the society's co-founder Stephan Jansen. Whereas Stradivari made instruments for the Church and the nobility, Guarneri's violins were made for musicians, and they became renowned for their deep and sonorous tones, Jansen said. "Inmo is one of the finest musicians of his generation," Jansen said. "When he came to my house and I showed him the fiddle, it was clear from the very first second that this is a match," he said. "Because in the end, it's also about chemistry, you know?" Yang will perform Pablo de Sarasate's "Carmen Fantasy", which he described as "a virtuoso piece for the violin". The broad palette of the violin adds the "strong, at times flirty character of the Carmen character," said Yang. The instrument's sound is also "quite unpredictable," he said, and "this kind of capricious nature really gives more liveliness to the piece". "Thinking that Paganini used this instrument is kind of spiritual, and I think people also want to hear Paganini's music played on his own violin," Yang added.

They spent Saturday at the Palio di Siena horse race before retreating to the villa to celebrate. She was joined by close pals and four of her six kids – Lourdes, Rocco, Stella and Estere – and her boyfriend, footballer Akeem Morris. Hot soup with noodles is the last thing I'd want during a heatwave, but each to their own. Camila wrote on Instagram: 'Thank you Osaka for bearing that insane heat with us and for generally being the cutest!' Fellow singer Tinashe – whose song No Broke Boys is at a new peak of No3 in the charts – was also on the line-up and admitted she struggled through her set. She commented: 'The heat was insane, I almost died.' Forget the ramen, it's time to find a cold shower instead. In the Big Fashion Issue – which features I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel on the cover – the Swedish Oscar winner reveals she's simply following in her mum Maria's footsteps. She says: 'Stage was what my mum did. It was what I grew up with. I watched Romeo and Juliet 24 times apparently. I had that feeling of being immersed in something completely. 'A bit like when kids watch cartoons over and over. I dreamt of being up there. That was what I visualised. I didn't even think of film – that was so far away, that wasn't real.' A new ad campaign starring the Girls Aloud singer will be made public today. Yesterday Nivea shared a teaser clip with Chezza, which showed her reading a newspaper and climbing some stairs, to promote the anti-ageing Nivea epigenetics range. It's Cheryl's first big job since the death of Liam Payne, the father of her son Bear, last October. A source said: 'This is a major brand deal for Cheryl, but it's a coup for Nivea to sign her up. 'Cheryl is very particular about who she works with and is rarely seen in public. 'To have her fronting a big campaign like this is brilliant for them. 'It'll have cost them a good six-figure sum to secure her, but it'll pay dividends to have Cheryl on board. 'She still has a massive following and people trust what she says.' If they're flogging a face cream that can help me look a little bit like Cheryl, I'll be buying it. HULLUVA GIG FOR COLDPLAY 13 Chris Martin's Coldplay kicked off their world tour in Hull Credit: Getty COLDPLAY kicked off the latest leg of their Music Of The Spheres world tour with the first of two shows in Hull last night. Before the gig, I'm told Chris checked out the local sights, and pints, which Yorkshire has to offer. He was spotted at The Duke of York, in Stainland. He chatted to the locals and handed out Coldplay badges, but asked them not to take pictures. It comes just days after he performed a mini set at the Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge. With ten shows at Wembley coming up, Londoners will be hoping he pops up into their local too. CAL RISKS A MILEY FALLOUT 13 Calvin Harris is risking a feud with Miley Cyrus Credit: Getty THEY have 14 No1 singles between them, so when Calvin Harris and Miley Cyrus revealed they had teamed up for a single in May last year, I was expecting it to be the song of the summer. But the track, Ocean, never got released after Miley is believed to have backed out. Now Calvin has risked a feud with the US singer after he released new snippets featuring the voice of Jessie Reyez, who co-wrote the song. Asked if Miley's version could still be released, he replied to one fan: 'I'm afraid not.' And quizzed on whether it was Miley's team's fault, he said: 'Nah it was my bad . . . crossed wires.' But in a pointed dig, he added: 'This is wayyy better,' before telling another 'Ooooh it's better now!!'. It's a belting tune, but if he wants fans to blast it while it's still hot, he needs to get a move on. TOM GRENNAN is on track to score his third No1 album with Everywhere I Went, Led Me To Where I Didn't Want To Be. It is in the lead in the midweek update from Official Charts, while US singer Conan Gray is at No2 with Wishbone. While As December Falls with Everything's On Fire But I'm Fine is at No3.
