GeoGuessr Bails On Controversial Saudi Tournament After Map Makers Revolt: 'When You Tell Us We've Got It Wrong We Take It Seriously'

Yahoo22-05-2025
GeoGuessr will not be one of the games participating in Saudi Arabia's Esports World Cup this year, after criticisms of sportswashing and the country's poor human rights record. The competitive guessing game that's popular on Twitch had previously agreed to be part of the event alongside Riot, Blizzard, and other game makers, but reversed course after a full-on revolt from its community of map makers. 'You—our community—have made it clear that this decision does not align what GeoGuessr stands for,' the CEO behind the game announced on Thursday.
'I've seen your reactions over the past few days regarding our decision to participate in the Esports World Cup in Riyadh,' Daniel Antell wrote in a statement on X. 'When we made that decision, it was with positive intentions. To engage with our community in the Middle East and to spread GeoGuessr's core mission of let everyone Explore the World.'
He continued, 'That said, you—our community—have made it clear that this decision does not align what GeoGuessr stands for. So, when you tell us we've got it wrong we take it seriously. That's why we've made the decision to withdraw from participating in the Esports World Cup in Riyadh.'
GeoGuessr's retreat comes in the face of an uproar among fans after it revealed it would be joining the competitive gaming event scheduled to take place over the summer in Riyadh. 'We, the creators of a considerable share of GeoGuessr's most popular maps, have decided to make our maps unplayable in protest of GeoGuessr AB's decision to host a World Championship wildcard tourney at the Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh,' Zemmip posted on the game's subreddit yesterday. 'The EWC is a sportswashing tool used by the government of Saudi Arabia to distract from and conceal its horrific human rights record.'
As Aftermath reports, GeoGuessr uses data from Google to test its players' geographical knowledge, but relies in large part on community maps to funnel all of that information into locations and content for PvP duels that are more interesting to play and watch. Many fans signed onto the map makers' boycott, with support for the blackout spreading through the GeoGuessr Discord, even as big prize pools in Saudi Arabia tried to lure the game's top competitors.
The Esports World Cup features a $70 million prize pool and lots of flashy pageantry. Launched in 2024, it's part of a growing pattern of Saudi Arabia trying to leverage sports, entertainment, and gaming in particular to diversify its economy and improve its national image which is otherwise tainted by everything from anti-LGBTQ+ laws to the slaughter of journalists critical of the ruling royal family. Esports pros in other scenes, from Valorant to Dota 2, have faced criticism for participating in that effort.
'Imagine the one dev with the balls to stand up to Saudi is GeoGuessr,' wrote former Overwatch League caster Christopher 'MonteCristo' Mykles after it reversed course. 'Time for Riot, Blizzard, EA, and Epic to follow suit.'

Kyrie Irving on leaving LeBron's Cavaliers: 'It was just literally my time to move on'

There was a lot of drama around Kyrie Irving's exit from the LeBron James Cavaliers in the summer of 2017, just a year after they had teamed up to bring a title to Cleveland, with Irving hitting the biggest shot in Cleveland history. The spin at the time was that Irving was very unhappy his name came up in trade rumors and there was speculation — which was never backed up by any evidence — that LeBron had wanted Irving gone. Irving may never have wanted LeBron to return to Cleveland in the first place. None of that is how Irving sees it — and he doesn't have any bad blood toward LeBron and would be open to playing with him again (which plays into some speculation about what LeBron might do next summer). Here is what Irving said on a recent Twitch stream. 'When you're playing with someone like [James], or somebody you like to compare him to, it's a different animal. It's a different journey, you're automatically expected to be at the top of the league. Every time you play with him it's going to be a lot of media attention, a lot of narratives, spun narratives, politics, a lot of s*** that people don't see in front of the camera. And for me I was just a young person trying to figure it out. It's not that I disliked playing with him at any time, it was just literally my time to move on.' Irving went from being the favorite child and No. 1 pick in Cleveland to the No. 2 option next to LeBron, and on some nights the No. 3 option next to peak Kevin Love. That changed the dynamic for Irving, who was entering his fourth NBA season when LeBron decided to return to Cleveland from Miami. 'Being a young player, when you're on a team that's not winning a lot of games, it's a lot of bad habits that form, and that's what ended up happening to me when I was very young. I had a lot of bad habits. I was not a winner, I was not a good loser at all. I take my accountability, I had a lot of bad habits. That came from losing games and trying to get buckets all the time. I know it may have been beautiful for everybody to watch and getting all the highlights and accolades, but all I really wanted to do was win.' Ultimately, Irving was traded to Boston, and what started well there ended poorly. Irving then signed with Brooklyn to team up with Kevin Durant on a roster that never lived up to its potential, and now he is in Dallas with Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg (although Irving is expected to miss much of the 2025-26 season recovering from a torn ACL suffered last March). There is speculation about LeBron to Dallas in the summer of 2026 — fueled by his and Davis' simultaneous, cryptic Instagram posts — but we are a long way off from that potential reunion. Just know Irving is in a different, and better, mental place than when these stars played together before.

The EWC Esports Embassy Finally Nails A Luxury Event Experience

The Esports World Cup 2025 has been a resounding success, with some incredible action taking place over the past six weeks. Now with just one week to go the competition is heating up, with multiple Clubs still in contention to win the overall Club Championship, and hundreds of players still hoping to lift one of the few remaining trophies. But away from the bright lights, situated high above the players competing on stage in Riyadh, major business is being done in the Esports Embassy. With a view overlooking three of the main stages at the Esports World Cup, the Esports Embassy is the place to be for anyone looking to network at the event. Designed as a space for VIPs, EWC partners and any celebs that may find themselves at the Esports World Cup, the Embassy is a luxury retreat to meet other major players in the space away from the massive crowds on the ground. 'Last year was the first edition of the Esports World Cup, and we felt like something was missing,' said Mohammed Al Nimer, Chief Commercial Officer at the Esports World Cup Foundation. 'We didn't have a space where we could host VIPs, celebrities and sponsors. So we wanted to create something, a networking space, a VIP space, where those people could come, and we'd feel proud hosting them throughout the event. It's also something very new, it doesn't really exist in esports. You have attempts at premium lounges and similar areas, but with this type of format, quality and execution, I think we're the first to do it. It really came from a need because it was lacking, and we felt like we wanted to do something different.' Positioned on the top floor of the building that houses three of the four main stages at the Esports World Cup, the long corridor like space has been transformed into a luxury lounge, offering the best views of the stages with floor to ceiling windows showcasing the entire arena. It's a perfect space to watch the games, but also to get business done with private meeting rooms, networking spaces and more than a few snacks and exceptional food to keep you fuelled throughout the day. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder It's also an ideal place to talk business and show off what esports is to newcomers. There is nothing quite like being in a packed out esports arena with thousands of fans cheering on as a champion is crowned, but for people who don't understand the game or the esports culture, that experience can be somewhat confusing and overwhelming. The Embassy allows the uninitiated to watch the action from a slightly less intense position, while still getting the full arena experience. Then, if they want to get right into the action, it's just a short walk to the main arena seating to join the crowd. 'A lot of people, when you invite them to EWC, say, 'oh, but I'm not a gamer,' this space makes it accessible for everyone because you don't have to be a gamer or an esports fan to enjoy it,' said Al Nimer. 'You can have an amazing atmosphere, great food, meet with clients in the meeting rooms, discuss projects, and then tour the festival as a kind of team-building activity.' While you can just buy a ticket to the Embassy, this is a place designed for those making deals in the world of esports. The private meeting rooms are in near constant use, with deals and collaborations being discussed for the future. With the Esports World Cup now established as a major annual event, more and more people are wanting to get involved, and a lot of those conversations are being started at the Embassy. 'As a brand, when you invest in esports and the EWC, the audience feels like you're contributing to the success of their favourite sport,' said Al Nimer. 'It's massive, but it's still growing year-on-year towards billions of fans. Also, in the summer, there's usually not much happening in the region. The EWC has turned what is usually a dead season into a very active one. And within that, the Embassy offers a space brands can be proud to invite VIPs and C-level executives to.' The Esports Embassy is impressive and finally seems to offer a functional luxury space at an esports event that lets you watch the action live, while also experiencing the finer things and being able to talk business. Other events have had similar experiences, but often tucked away backstage with the action taking place on screens showing the broadcast, instead of giving attendees a live view into the arena. It's a well executed idea, and while the masses will never experience it thanks to the exclusive guest list and high ticket price, for those who can get in, it should provide exactly what they are looking for.
