Manchester City have found the defender they so desperately needed
Manchester City signed four players in the January transfer window. One of those was centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov. The Uzbekistan international has impressed since his eventful debut for the club against Chelsea. From that moment onwards Khusanov has shown that he has added the attributes that Manchester City's defence so desperately needed. He displayed those once again last night during City's 1-nil win over Tottenham. He was once again solid at the back as he helped his team pick up a clean sheet and three vital points in the race to secure Champions League football for next season.
We had seen before Khusanov's arrival that Manchester City needed a centre-back with pace to add to their defence. Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and John Stones have all battled injuries this season. In their fitness battles, Pep Guardiola's side has lacked a proper no-nonsense defender who can defend well when running back towards his own goal. That is a necessary attribute for City's defenders given the high defensive line Pep Guardiola employs. Khusanov has added this and Manchester City are better for it. It's no coincidence that City have kept two clean sheets in their past three Premier League games with Khusanov in the lineup.
Abdukodir Khusanov adds pace, strength, defensive acumen and a no-nonsense attitude to Manchester City's defence. Even in possession, he keeps it simple. Although he is beginning to add to his repertoire when on the ball. But Khusanov is a defender first and foremost and that is all he needs to be for now. He was defensively solid last night against Ange Postecoglou's side. He stood up in the second half when his team needed him to at the back. Khusanov wasn't perfect but he played an important role in City's vital win.
Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Abdukodir Khusanov and the start he has made at Manchester City following his team's win last night. The City manager believes that Khusanov will become a player that City fans will love. He explained post-game: 'So fast, so quick, quality with passes is extraordinary. He breaks the lines. He has the ability to do it. He has to improve but he's 20.'
'I've seen players with a lot of pace but he is one of them.'
'People adore him. He is silent, no complaints and so humble and I'm sure our fans will love him. '
'It's not easy to overcome after what happened after five minutes against Chelsea but he was calm and he handled it.'
'The games he's played recently, he's been really, really good.'
Abdukodir Khusanov has added the attributes to Manchester City's defence that they so desperately needed. That is a huge credit to Khusanov and his performances so far for Manchester City. As Pep Guardiola said City fans will love the young centre-back. But it's clear that they do already and that love will only grow as Khusanov develops as a player.

'Negative experience' - Juric breaks silence on 107-day Saints reign
IVAN Juric admitted his ill-fated reign as Saints boss was "a negative experience" but insisted it was "very positive" for his growth as a manager. New Atalanta boss Juric departed Saints in April following official confirmation of their relegation to the Championship, having lost 12 of his 14 Premier League games. Advertisement The Croatian's only league victory came at fellow relegated side Ipswich Town, and his south coast departure came six months after he was sacked by Roma. Juric has now replaced Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta, after his mentor joined Roma, and has opened up on his difficult season in Italy and England. Speaking in his first press conference, Juric said: "(It was) a negative year on a sporting level. Human and knowledge level, it was fantastic. "I think I feel much stronger than a year ago, because (at) Roma I saw great clubs, great players. I learned a lot. In Southampton, I appreciated a fabulous Premier League. Advertisement "People who are in the club, who know how to work. I saw really beautiful things. In the Premier League, I also remember the level of the players, (it's) very high. "I think two negative experiences on the one hand, and on the other, (it was) very positive for me and my growth." Juric lasted just 107 days in charge of Southampton and departed 24 hours after their 3-1 defeat to Spurs, which confirmed the club's relegation to the Championship. He has been replaced by Belgian-born English coach Will Still, who has signed a three-year deal and is targeting an instant return to the Premier League. Advertisement Juric has penned a two-year contract at Champions League-qualified Atalanta and is set to coach in UEFA's top club competition for the first time in his career. The Split-born manager did take charge of four Europa League fixtures during his two-month spell in charge of Roma, winning just once and losing twice. Fellow former Saints boss Russell Martin, whom Juric replaced, will also be competing in the 2025/26 Champions League after taking over at Rangers. The Ibrox club will enter the Champions League in the second round of qualifying, while Atalanta have qualified directly by finishing third in Serie A.

Chelsea halt negotiations with Milan for Mike Maignan after failing to agree fee
Chelsea have cooled their interest in Mike Maignan after failing to agree a fee with Milan for the goalkeeper before the Club World Cup. The Stamford Bridge club, who are also pursuing a deal for the Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, commenced talks with Milan after being presented with an opportunity to sign Maignan. The France international has a year left on his deal and has indicated that he wants to join Chelsea. Advertisement Related: Football transfer rumours: Gittens to Chelsea before first deadline closes? Chelsea's hope has been to push transfers for Maignan and Gittens through before Tuesday's 7pm BST registration deadline for the group stages of the Club World Cup, which begins on Sunday. However, the Uefa Conference League winners were not willing to overpay for Maignan given that the 29-year-old will be available on a free transfer next summer. They were willing to pay around €15m (£12.7m) for the former Lille goalkeeper, with Milan demanding €25m. The clubs have been unable to reach an agreement and negotiations have ended for now. There remains a chance that Chelsea will revisit the situation with Maignan later this summer. The transfer window reopens on Monday, enabling teams in the Club World Cup to register new players for the tournament's knockout phase. Maignan can discuss a pre-contract with foreign clubs from next January. Chelsea, who travel to the USA on Friday and play LAFC in their opening game in Atlanta on Monday, have refused to be pressured into meeting Milan's demands. They remain happy with their quartet of goalkeepers, Robert Sánchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders. Sánchez excelled at the end of last season, recovering from a dip in form to help Enzo Maresca's side qualify for the Champions League. There is huge excitement about Penders following the highly rated 19-year-old's arrival from Genk. Marcus Bettinelli, Chelsea's current No 3, is joining Manchester City. The Blues who have already boosted their attack by signing Liam Delap for £30m, are also looking for a right-footed left winger. They have had a bid rejected for Gittens but are relaxed about the situation. The 20-year-old has agreed a seven-year contract with Chelsea but Dortmund, who are also in the Club World Cup, want up to £50m for the England Under-21 international.

Newcastle links re-emerge after James Trafford's impressive campaign
James Trafford has again been linked with Newcastle United following an impressive campaign in the Championship. Trafford played a key role as the Clarets secured an immediate return to the Premier League under Scott Parker, only conceding 16 goals in the league all season. Advertisement The goalkeeper was linked with the Magpies last summer but remained at Turf Moor, keeping a remarkable 29 clean sheets. He is currently on international duty with England and was an unused substitute against Andorra over the weekend. Thomas Tuchel's side are back in action tonight against Senegal. Sky Sports claim that Newcastle are 'in talks' over a potential deal for Trafford to provide competition with Nick Pope, who departed East Lancashire in the summer of 2022. Trafford recently spoke about his situation last summer and admitted he had been "close" to a move. 'In the summer I think people knew I wanted to move,' he told Fozcast. 'The club that I was close to going, it was a good fit for me. It was brilliant for me and I really believed in it. Advertisement 'I wanted to move, not just because I didn't want to play in the Championship, I had no shame playing in the Championship. 'I have no ego to think I'm better than the Championship. You only prove something by performing and showing people. 'It was just when an opportunity and a situation you think suits you can happen, you should take it and try to go for it, so I wanted to move. It was close but it didn't end up happening. 'The manager was brilliant throughout pre-season. I wasn't the best, I was moody because I'm young and I wanted to move, but in the moment I still worked extremely hard. 'I knew the longer it went on, the reality became I would be playing the first game of the season and I wanted to play. 'I told the manager I'm available if he wanted to select me. If not, I'll sit on the bench but I'm available. He played me in the first game and that was it.'
