Netflix thriller shoots to top of the charts despite ‘underwhelming' reviews
Netflix's new murder mystery film is currently dominating the streaming charts, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Hailing from Spain, this intriguing thriller stars a familiar face who becomes embroiled in a high-profile murder case.
A Widow's Game features Pan's Labyrinth's child star Ivana Baquero, now all grown up as Maje, the wife of murder victim Antonio Navarro Cerdán. Carmen Machi, Tristán Ulloa, Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio and Álex Gadea also star.
Based on a real-life murder in 2017, Maje becomes the prime suspect in the fatal stabbing and the sensational headlines expose her private life.
A synopsis reads: 'When a man is found dead, the investigation shatters his widow's perfect facade and exposes a hidden double life in this thriller based on real events."
This true crime drama unfortunately hasn't been a hit with critics, but Netflix subscribers clearly can't get enough as it's currently at the top of the streamer's film chart worldwide.
Collider admitted the thriller 'doesn't really hit the mark', calling it an "underwhelming whodunnit".
Decider called it 'a slightly-better-than-middling drama, professionally executed from a technical standpoint but a bit thin of screenplay.'
And LeisureByte said in their mixed review: 'I enjoyed watching A Widow's Game, although I found myself a little confused with the documentary/fictional style of the storytelling. I felt like it clashed a bit and left to mystery in the middle.
'However, it's the performances and the characters' complexities that shine for me.'
Despite the middling professional reviews, some subscribers have been captivated by the stunning investigation.
A four-star Google review says: 'Despite these minor flaws, A Widow's Game succeeds in keeping audiences engaged.
'The strong performances, solid writing, and the eerie fact that it may be based on true events make it a worthy watch for crime drama fans. It's a chilling reminder that truth can sometimes be more unsettling than fiction.'
While a five-star review took the praise a step further: 'A Widow's Game is an absolute masterclass in storytelling, direction, and performance.
'Based on a true event, this gripping film pulls you into its web of intrigue from the very first scene and doesn't let go until the final frame.'
Will you make up your own mind and give A Widow's Game a try this week?

Netflix adds 'outstanding' crime series with 96% Rotten Tomatoes score as fans beg for fourth season
Netflix has recently added a new three-season long crime drama which is so good it has viewers skipping sleep to "binge it all night". Netflix has quietly added a brilliant crime thriller series which fans "can't turn off" as they've been left begging for a fourth season of the show. Sneaky Pete, starring Giovanni Ribisi in the leading role, follows the story of con man Marius, who steals the identity of his former cellmate Pete, after being released from prison to escape a dangerous gangster. Marius tricks Pete's family into believing he is their long-lost loved one but he quickly realises that their own secrets and lies could end up making his life as dangerous as the world he was desperately trying to escape. Other stars in the show include Margo Martindale, Bryan Cranston, Libe Barer and Marin Ireland. The American crime drama, co-created by Breaking Bad star Cranston first aired in 2015 but viewers are hooked after it was recently uploaded to Netflix. Sneaky Pete concluded in 2019 after its third season but fans are now begging for a fourth season after complaining the show came to an end too soon. The show, which originally aired on Amazon Prime Video, has been showered with praise as viewers rushed to X to express their surprise at just how good it was. One fan was left questioning how they missed the initial release of the show as they wrote: "Sneaky Pete on Netflix. Watch it. Holy s***. So so good. Don't know how I missed it the first time around." A second exclaimed: "Binge worthy series if you enjoy comedic heists and cons - 'Sneaky Pete' (Amazon Prime and Netflix)." A third chimed in: "Just got thru season 1 of Sneaky Pete and I'm mad no one told me ever hyped this show up????" Somebody else added: "I should be sleep. Up watching Sneaky Pete. Never heard of this show until the other day." Yet another agreed: "All I wanna do is watch Sneaky Pete." Someone else gushed: "Sneaky Pete has all my attention!!!" Another wrote: "Sneaky Pete on Netflix is a great show if you like unexpected turns and being on the edge of your seat." Fans are now begging for a fourth season to be released after many felt the show came to an abrupt end. One wrote: "Just binged watched #sneakypete. I need another series @netflix. Loved every episode." A second echoed: "Sneaky Pete is now on Netflix. Underrated show that ended too soon." The show was renewed for a second season in 2018, three years after its first season debuted so there may be hope for fans yet if enough of a fuss is kicked up about it. Sneaky Pete's release on Netflix came just weeks before actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death, who plays the recurring character of Marius' parole officer, James Bagwell, in the show. Another wrote: "I literally threw on Sneaky Pete, never even heard of it, and in comes Malcolm-Jamal Warner", alongside a sad face emoji.

I'm a TV writer and you need to catch up on these 3 thrilling Netflix series
These Netflix shows all have new seasons coming soon but there's time to catch up A number of Netflix shows have already returned with new seasons during 2025 with even more on the way. This includes some of the streamer's major flagpole titles such as Wednesday and The Sandman. This year will also see the latest and final instalment of Stranger Things after what feels like for fans as a mammoth wait. We've also seen follow ups for Squid Game and You. However there are smaller titles that are yet to make their comebacks to the platform. These are smaller titles that may have passed viewers by during their debut season. There is still plenty of time for Netflix fans to catch up on all episodes before they return. As a TV writer, these are the most underrated Netflix series that are coming back in 2025 or beyond that you should make sure you are caught up on. Alice in Borderland Alice in Borderland is said to be perfect for those who love dystopian sci-fi or Squid Game. The series follows obsessed gamer Arisu who suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive. There are two seasons to get through before the third lands on Netflix in September. With an 86% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers have even declared that it is better than Squid Game. One fan exclaimed: "Alice in Borderland is ten times better than Squid Game. The story, the plot twist, and the cast is 10/10." Another declared: "Alice in Borderland is nothing short of a masterpiece. A perfect blend of heart-pounding suspense, deep emotional storytelling, and jaw-dropping visuals. From the very first episode, it hooks you into a dystopian Tokyo where survival isn't just a game, it's an art." Alice in Borderland season three is streaming on Netflix from September 25. Breathless became the most-watched series on Netflix worldwide when it was released last year. For those who were disappointed over the cancellation of Pulse, it could be the medical drama to support when the second season debuts in October. The Spanish produced series is also said to be ideal for fans of Grey's Anatomy. According to its synopsis the arrival of a prestigious patient at Joaquín Sorolla Hospital highlights the complicated public health situation and lights the fuse of what will be a drastic, unprecedented strike. Upon its initial release, one fan commented: "If you're looking for Grey's type show... recommend Breathless on Netflix. Better and more intense than I'd anticipated. That ending! I need a second season NOW." Another added: "I just finished all 8 episodes of Breathless on Netflix. When's the next season? I am mad it ended where it did." Breathless season two is streaming on Netflix from October 31. The Lincoln Lawyer Of the three, there is still no confirmed date for the return of Lincoln Lawyer. That's a benefit as it has the most episodes of the list to catch up. There are currently three seasons to binge, as the fourth is reported to already be well into production with an expected 2026 release. The riveting series is an adaptation of the novels by Michael Connelly. It follows lawyer Mickey Haller's life as a defense attorney who rules his LA courtroom from the back of a chauffeur-driven Lincoln Navigator. Each season packs it owns punch with facing complex legal battles with their own twists and turns. Each season has one major case that follows through the main plotline and will easily keep you hooked. It boasts a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the latest season has critics raving with a stellar perfect score. One reviewer exclaimed: "The Lincoln Lawyer is as addictive as a courtroom drama can get." Another added : "One of best if you want a quality thing to watch . This series is a masterpiece in its own way."
