With Evergreen Park trailing Tinley Park, Maddie Bruno knows exactly what to do. And how. ‘Bring that urgency.'

Chicago Tribune30-04-2025

Maddie Bruno has been the ultimate leader in both soccer and volleyball for Evergreen Park.
On the soccer field, the senior midfielder is a great communicator, organizer and motivator. But the biggest thing she provides to the team can be summed up in one word, according to fellow senior midfielder Itzel Alvarez.
'Urgency,' Alvarez said of Bruno. 'She's always like the first one to go for it and I love that. If you don't have that, people are kind of scared. But we have Maddie to bring that urgency.
'Watching her go up there, take a shot and make it, it boosts everybody else on the team's confidence.'
That's exactly what happened Tuesday night. Bruno scored two of three second-half goals for the Mustangs, who rallied for a 3-2 win over host Tinley Park in a South Suburban Conference crossover game.
Alvarez capped the scoring for Evergreen Park (7-5, 4-2 SSC Red). Jade Rubalcava added two assists and Gwenyth Sichelski made five saves.
Alexandria Rocha and Gracie Fitzgerald each scored a goal for Tinley Park (7-5, 5-2 SSC Blue), while Maggie Stachowicz finished with 13 saves.
Tinley Park held its second annual breast cancer benefit game and honored former player Christine Hermann, who died in 2023 after a battle with breast cancer.
Titans coach Kelsey Neylon was Hermann's teammate at Tinley Park.
'I think the biggest thing is teaching the girls that this is so much more than just a game,' Neylon said. 'It's meshing with people that you wouldn't normally hang out with and growing these bonds that you wouldn't typically have.
'It's creating this sisterhood. That's how it was when Chrissy and I were teammates and I just want to keep that going.'
On the field, though, it was Evergreen Park's night. It was thanks largely to Bruno, who scored on a shot from 15 yards just four minutes into the second half to tie the game 1-1.
She then converted on a penalty kick a little less than 10 minutes later — after Rubalcava was fouled in the box — to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
'I was going to do anything I could to put one in for the team,' Bruno said. 'We kind of strive on momentum, and once we get going, we can go. But it sometimes takes us a minute to get there.'
After the Titans forced a 2-2 tie, Alvarez provided the game-winner on a high shot from 25 yards with 24 minutes to go.
Bruno, who has five goals this season, is a four-year varsity starter in soccer who has also been a star volleyball player for Evergreen Park.
She's comfortable sharing everything she has learned from all that time in the spotlight.
'Someone has to step up and be that leader,' she said. 'I'm loud on the field. I just like to talk. I try to encourage people because if it's silent out there, nobody knows where anybody is. Plus, we always need a push to get us going.'
Evergreen Park coach Matt Majchrowicz knows Bruno will have the team ready to go.
'Maddie is very tough for us,' Majchrowicz said. 'She's one of the girls that keeps us going. She's very hard on us, showing up early to practice and making sure everything is the way it needs to be, but she's very positive.
'It's very, 'Hey, let's go get it.' She's a motivator for the team and she's definitely a grinder.'
Bruno has seen her team grow in major ways over her varsity career. The Mustangs won the program's first regional championship last season.
'It's been awesome,' she said. 'Winning that regional last year just showed how our hard work has paid off. This season, we've just been pushing hard and we just want more.
'Before my freshman year, there had been a few seasons where they didn't win a single game, so we've come a really long way. We just want that for the school. We want to make history.'

'Fight of the century' - Alvarez-Crawford date confirmed

Turki Alalshikh (centre) announced last month that a super-fight had been agreed between Terence Crawford (left) and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (right) [Getty Images] Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's super-fight against Terence Crawford will take place in Las Vegas on Saturday, 13 September. Mexican pound-for-pound great Alvarez will meet undefeated American Crawford for the undisputed super-middleweight title. Advertisement The blockbuster will be streamed globally on Netflix and has been billed the "fight of the century" by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's general entertainment authority. It will be the first fight to be promoted by Alalshikh in collaboration with UFC president Dana White. "Turki wants to make the biggest fights that the fans want to see in boxing and this is right up my alley," said White. "Are you kidding me that the first boxing fight I'm going to get to promote is Canelo versus Crawford? It's literally a once-in-a-lifetime fight." Alvarez holds all four recognised world titles in the super-middleweight division after the 34-year-old beat William Scull last month. Advertisement That resulted in him regaining the IBF belt and the undisputed super-middleweight title, and after the fight Crawford was confirmed as his next opponent, with the pair posing for a face-off in the ring. "I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," the Mexican said in a statement on Tuesday. Alvarez has 63 wins from 67 professional fights, with two draws and two defeats. Crawford is a four-division and two-weight undisputed champion, and will be moving up from light-middleweight. The 37-year-old possesses a flawless record, having won all 41 of his pro fights. Advertisement "My perfect record speaks for itself," said Crawford. "I am the best fighter in the world and no matter the opponent or weight class, I have always come out on top." The fight - expected to take place at Allegiant Stadium - will be preceded by a three-city media tour, visiting Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (20 June), before heading to the United States as the fighters appear in New York (22 June) and Las Vegas (27 June). Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford to fight in Las Vegas for unified super middleweight title

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boxing's most-anticipated fight in years, Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford, will be in Las Vegas on Sept. 13 after much speculation that it would take place in Saudi Arabia. The fight for the unified super middleweight championship is part of Alvarez's reported $400 million, minimum four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. One of those fights can be in another location, and Las Vegas has become the boxing home for the Mexican champion. Riyadh Season is working with UFC CEO Dana White to promote the fight. This is White's first foray into boxing as part of an effort to become a major player in the sport. 'Are you kidding me that the first boxing fight I'm going to get to promote is Canelo vs. Crawford?' White said in a statement. "It's literally a once in a lifetime fight." Alvarez (63-2-2) unified the division by defeating William Scull by unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 3. Crawford, who is from Omaha, Nebraska, attended that bout, and the four-division champ who is 41-0 announced in the ring with Alvarez that they would meet in September. 'I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,' Alvarez said in a statement. Added Crawford: 'My perfect record speaks for itself. I am the best fighter in the world and no matter the opponent or weight class, I have always come out on top. On September 13, my hand will be raised once again as the world watches greatness.' ___

Netflix secures broadcast rights for Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford boxing mega-fight

The biggest boxing fight of 2025 has found a home on the biggest streaming service in the world. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford, the Sept. 13 mega-fight between pound-for-pound greats for the sport's undisputed super middleweight titles, will be streamed globally by Netflix at no additional cost to its subscribers, Turki Alalshikh announced Tuesday. Advertisement In a major victory for the sport, Alvarez vs. Crawford becomes the third boxing event over a span of just 10 months to stream on the Netflix platform, which boasts more than 300 million global subscribers. The controversial Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul heavyweight fight became the first boxing event on Netflix this past November, ultimately being watched by an audience exceeding 65 million viewers. Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano 2 was the co-feature on that night, and now the two future Hall of Famers are set to headline Netflix's second boxing event with their trilogy fight on July 11 in New York. Additionally, Alalshikh said that Alvarez vs. Crawford will take place in Las Vegas but did not name a venue. Allegiant Stadium was originally supposed to host Alvarez vs. Crawford on Sept. 12, however once the date of the fight changed to Sept. 13, it was unable to do so, as the venue had a preexisting booking with the UNLV Rebels vs. Idaho State college football game. Advertisement It was then announced that Saudi-owned Sela would be the lead promoter for the highly anticipated 168-pound showdown instead of TKO Boxing — the latter being an entity formed by Alalshikh, UFC CEO Dana White and WWE president Nick Khan earlier this year. White and the UFC faced a dilemma when the date shifted from Sept. 12 to Sept. 13, as the UFC had already committed to promoting its Noche UFC 3 event on that date. However, construction delays at Mexico's Arena Guadalajara forced the show to be moved to San Antonio and become a Fight Night event rather than the originally-planned pay-per-view card. After this happened, White was able to commit to Alvarez vs. Crawford again, and thus TKO will be the lead promoter for the event. Allegiant Stadium is also understood to be back in play to host the show, with a potential deal in the works to shift the UNLV football game off the date. Alvarez and Crawford will come face-to-face for a three-city press tour beginning on June 20 in Riyadh, then on June 22 in New York, before concluding June 27 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
