Khumalo still hopes for Cosafa semis berth

The Herald3 days ago

Bafana Bafana Cosafa Cup coach Vela Khumalo remains hopeful his troops will make it into the semifinals of this year's tournament.
The national second-string team kept that dream alive with a 2-0 win in their group A fixture against Zimbabwe at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
Kabelo Dlamini converted a first-half penalty, while Ime Okon headed in a second goal near the end to make sure of the points.
Coach Khumalo said the weekend's victory was a huge confidence boost. SA are grouped with Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Mozambique.
Mozambique head the group A with four points from two games ahead of their final fixture against Zimbabwe, followed by South Africa (three), Mauritius (two) and Zimbabwe (one).
'This is the boost that we needed; however, we are still hopeful,' Khumalo said.
'We're still saying Mozambique must win against Zimbabwe, then you know.
'We need to win the remaining game now. We need to win against Mauritius and than we take it from there.'
After their opening 1-0 defeat to Mozambique, the coach said they went into Saturday's match under pressure.
'When you join football, it is pressure on its own. So add that we are hosts, we didn't start well, and we are missing chances. That gives you pressure.
'However, after our analysis we were very positive that we are at least going to get goals from this and win the game and move forward.
'When we played the first game against Mozambique, we played 4-2-3-1. We then said let's have more numbers because we were a little bit thin on top.
'So, we opted for 3-4-3 and we brought in the two 10s that were coming inside to support our striker. We did that because we knew that when they play SA, they will go low block.'
SA's final group game against Mauritius is at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday (3pm).

Kagiso Rabada shines for Proteas on seesaw opening day of Test final

The SA team were restricted to 43/4 at the close of play, trailing Australia by 169 runs in their first innings. Kagiso Rabada celebrates his fifth wicket on the opening day of the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. Picture: Paul Harding/Gallo Images South Africa found themselves against the ropes late on Wednesday, despite controlling the game for most of the opening day of the World Test Championship final against Australia in London. With 14 wickets falling on day one, the global final got off to a spectacular start, with bowlers dominating for both teams. Though they did well to take control in the early stages of the match, the Proteas crumbled in the final session, as they stumbled to 43/4 at the close of play, trailing the defending champions by 169 runs with six wickets in hand in their first innings. Having bundled out the Baggy Greens for 212 runs in the final session, the SA team looked to be in the driving seat, but they lost their first four wickets for just 30 runs. Ryan Rickelton, who made 16 runs, was the only member of the Proteas' top five who hit double figures, as they were left flailing in the chase for South Africa's first global Test title. When stumps were drawn, captain Temba Bavuma was on three not out, after facing 37 balls as he tried to play out the day, and David Bedingham was unbeaten on eight. Australia first innings Earlier, Kagiso Rabada led the charge as the Proteas frontline attack ripped through Australia's line-up after the SA team won the toss and opted to field. Rabada took 5/51 – his 17th career five-wicket haul – and his second at Lord's, after he achieved the feat against England in August 2022. And he was well backed by Marco Jansen, who returned 3/49, as the Baggy Greens were bundled out 212 within 57 overs in their first innings. After losing four wickets in the first session, Steve Smith and Beau Webster shared 79 runs for the fifth wicket before Smith was removed by Marco Jansen for 66 to break the stand. Webster went on to contribute 72 runs, but Rabada and Jansen dismantled the lower order shortly after lunch, and it looked like Australia were in trouble before their bowling attack hit back.

Bafana Bafana moving on from Themba Zwane?

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has touched on the possibility of finding the next Themba Zwane in his squad. Mshishi has been one of the most important players in Broos's squad in the past two years. He was part of the team that finished third in last year's Africa Cup of Nations. Having been out of action for nearly eight months, the Mamelodi Sundowns have had to miss important matches for the national team. Zwane has since recovered following a lengthy injury he suffered while representing Bafana. During that time, Broos selected a number of players for Mshishi's role. 'I have to be honest and say until now we have not found a second Themba, that type of player,' he said. 'But maybe we can solve it in another way. That's something we wanted to see in these two games. We can solve it otherwise. Do we have to look? For the moment, we didn't find a second Themba. 'But who can assure that Themba will be ready in September? he asked. So we have to look for other solutions, and we will see if we can solve the problem by playing in a different way. 'You can always say there and there, you have to be a little bit better. The only thing I can say as an example, against Mozambique is that [Sinoxolo] Kwayiba has a totally different style of play than Themba [Zwane], even if they play the same position,' Broos said. Zwane has not featured much for Sundowns under Miguel Cardoso, which might affect his place in the Bafana squad going forward. Kwayiba's form could very well see Mshishi featuring less for the national team in the future. Rabada and Jansen strike huge blows to give Proteas advantage at lunch

But Jansen ensured those concerns could be dealt with in a more relaxed fashion at the interval as he returned for his second spell from the Pavilion End, picking up Labuschagne, who pushed at a delivery that for the most part he'd been leaving alone. His 17 took 55 balls and Labuschagne will know he wasted a lot of hard labour. Head arrived and took a wild swing at the first ball he faced, then thrashed Jansen through point to register only the sixth boundary for Australia in the morning session. The big blow came in the 24th over, with Head nudging at a ball down leg side and Verreynne hurling himself to his right and snagging a brilliant one-handed catch to send Head — player of the match in the 2023 WTC final — trudging back to the changeroom for 11. Smith was lucky, too, to survive an lbw call on 26 after South Africa chose to review, but the replays indicated the ball only clipping leg-stump, thus umpire Chris Gaffney's on-field call of not out stood.
