Nourishing £8 hand cream called ‘fantastic for gardeners' and ‘go-to for very dry hands'

Daily Mirror23-04-2025
If working outdoors this spring has got your hands feeling especially dry and chapped, this hardworking hand cream has become a must-have for shoppers for soothing sore skin
Hand cream should really be used all year round – your hands can never be too hydrated – but if this time of year sees you spending time working in the garden, whatever the weather, then you might find your hands becoming particularly dry and chapped. Luckily, we've got the perfect solution.
The Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector has been a favourite with gardeners for years, men and women, and has amassed thousands of five star reviews from customers calling it "the best hand cream". It's available to buy in 30ml or 100ml tubes on The Body Shop website, starting from £8. Loved by men as well as women, it's also a great idea for a Father's Day gift if you're starting to think ahead to June, and your dad is green-fingered.
Promising up to an impressive 96 hours of moisture, this super-rich yet non-greasy formula contains hemp seed oil for intense nourishment. One of The Body Shop's bestsellers, it has over 8,000 five star reviews on the brand's website, including some of the following high praise:
"I have very dry hands because I love gardening and am always washing them. I have found this hand cream absolutely the very best. I always buy it," one repeat customer wrote, while another agreed that it's "fantastic for gardeners hard working hands".
"This is my go to for very dry hands - nothing else comes close," another person commented. "Works quickly and absorbs well." Meanwhile a third review reads: "This must be the best hand cream ever. Works immediately to improve the appearance of your hands."
Another happy shopper reinforced the fact that men love it too, writing: " My husband loves this product as he has very dry hands from work and it actually helps."
A few people, however, have knocked a star off their reviews for the product's smell, as the scent of hemp might not be for everyone ("I would give 5 star but I don't like the smell." one four star review reads). If it's a gorgeous fragrance you're after from your hand cream, I can't recommend L'Occitane Almond Delicious Hands Cream enough; this Amanda range smells incredible, and this hand cream is currently on sale, reduced from £20 to £16.
Another super-nourishing option for ultra-dry hands is Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve, £25, which is formulated with avocado oil, eucalyptus oil and sesame seed oil. And although a different, richer texture to typical hand creams, cult classic Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, now £24.80, is a favourite amongst NHS workers for using on their hands, and a tube will last for ages.

Schoolgirl fundraising for dad's speech therapy and charity that saved his life

A schoolgirl has set herself a fundraising mission to thank the people who saved her dad's life after he suffered a stroke. Michael McGregor, from Lochgilphead, was at work in Oban in March when colleagues noticed that his face had changed and he had gone quiet. The 39-year-old was taken to the nearest A&E before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for emergency stroke treatment. Michael's loved ones were told that if he hadn't been transferred via air ambulance, his chances of survival would have been slim. After undergoing rehabilitation therapy at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for three months, the dad has been able to return home but still struggles with his mobility and ability to speak. His daughter, seven-year-old Lydia Parker, has now decided to cycle 18 miles along the Crinan Canal in an effort to raise funds for Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance and her dad's speech therapy. Supplied The stroke has affected both Michael's mobility and ability to speak. Mum, Hannah Parker, told STV News: 'She was determined to do something this time after we explained that Daddy was fighting for his life and that the air ambulance got him to where he needed to be. 'She decided to raise money for the helicopter that saved Daddy's life. That was her mission. 'Lydia always says she wants to hear Daddy speaking to me, so we decided that any additional money would be used for speech and language therapy so he can speak to his daughter again.' Hannah believes the relationship between her ex-partner, Michael, and his daughter played a crucial role in waking him up after the almost fatal stroke. 'She is a daddy's girl', the 35-year-old said. Supplied Martin and Lydia visit Ibrox for Father's Day. 'When we thought Michael was going to lose his life and he had slept all day, the moment he heard Lydia's voice, his eyes opened and he tried to smile. 'He lives for her, and they have a fantastic relationship.' For Father's Day, Michael had a tour around Ibrox with Lydia. The seven-year-old is always looking for ways to spend as much time with her dad as possible. Hannah believes her daughter has faced the difficult ordeal with a lot of courage. 'What Lydia has been through, you wouldn't wish on any child,' the mum said. Supplied Lydia is due to start the cycle at the end of next month. 'She has been the bravest soul. Both her dad and I are very proud of her. 'Lydia is an amazing girl, and she is resilient to everything. She was very scared at the beginning, but now she continuously thinks of ways she can help her dad. 'She always wants to spend time with him.' Lydia will set off from Lochgilphead, Front Green, on August 30 alongside Finlay Macintyre, Michael's seven-year-old stepson. Powys girl climbs Brecon Beacons mountain for dad 'Benny'

A schoolgirl from hay-on-Wye hiked Pen y Fan on Father's Day in memory of her dad after he passed away earlier this year. Edee Morris, a 12-year-old from Hay-on-Wye, raised £640 for Wales Air Ambulance by hiking up the tallest peak in South Wales on Father's Day, as a tribute to her dad after he passed away from a brain bleed in January. Her father Karl, better known to friends and family as Benny, had the brain bleed at home but was taken by Wales Air Ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, but despite the best efforts of medics he passed away three days later. In tribute to her father, Edee wanted to raise funds for the charity that helped get him to hospital and set herself the challenge of hiking Pen y Fan, supported on the day by friends and family to go above her fundraising target of £600. Edee's sister Georgie O'Hagan said: 'It was a fantastic day, none of us trained so it was a bit ruthless at times. But we were doing it in memory of Edee's dad and for the Wales Air Ambulance, which is a vital service, so it made it worthwhile. 'We're very proud of Edee, it was an emotional day and emotions were high, especially with it being on Father's Day. Benny's death is still very raw, but the fundraiser helped us all come together and we're very proud.' Benny was remembered as a caring man who continued to help people even after he passed away, with organ donations saving the lives of three people who spent years on the transplant waiting list. Hannah Bartlett, Individual Giving Manager for the Wales Air Ambulance, added: 'Congratulations to Edee for hiking Pen y Fan in memory of her father, Benny. What a lovely way to honour his memory. At just 13-years-old Edee has shown so much strength to want to raise funds for our charity just months after losing her father. 'Thank you to Edee for raising an incredible amount of money for the Wales Air Ambulance. Your support will help us to continue to be there for the people of Wales when they need us the most. We appreciate your support and we're sure your dad would be very proud of you. 'Thank you to everyone who supported Edee on the day and donated to her fundraiser.'

My baby ruined my career – trolls call me ‘bad mum' & say I should've ‘kept my legs closed' but I'm a proud single mum

Derricka has gone from working 50-hour weeks, to clocking in less than 25 hours since becoming a mum BABY HELL My baby ruined my career – trolls call me 'bad mum' & say I should've 'kept my legs closed' but I'm a proud single mum Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MUM who admits having a baby "ruined her career" says trolls have dubbed her a 'bad mum' and accused her of hating her son. High-flyer Derricka Hill, 31, unexpectedly fell pregnant with her little boy, Derriawn, one, in October 2023. 3 A mum has admitted that having a baby 'ruined her career' Credit: SWNS 3 Internet trolls have bashed the mum online Credit: SWNS Despite being career-focused in her role as a marketing recruiter - which saw her work 50-hour weeks - Derricka was excited to experience motherhood. Derriawn was born via caesarean on June 28, 2024, weighing 9 lb. But, since returning to work, Derriawn has had a constant three-month chronic ear infection and has contracted salmonella. This left single mum Derricka having to use her annual leave and take unpaid days off to care for him. Some weeks, she is only able to work 25 hours a week in order to look after Derriawn and she says the reduced hours have "ruined her career" because time off means she's "not a valuable employee". But she insists she "wouldn't be without him". Derricka, who has full custody of her little boy, from Seattle, Washington State, said: "I ruined my career by having a son. "When I have time off, I don't bring money into the business. I'm not as valuable as an employee in a business sense. "I wanted to experience the trials and tribulations of motherhood. "People online call me a 'bad mother' or say that I hate my son. I don't, he is my whole world, but being a single mum working full time in corporate America is tough. "Plus, dealing with a child who is sick is an added layer. Laura Anderson takes HUGE swipe at Gary Lucy on Father's Day "I'd never be without him but my career has suffered enormously. I don't have the luxury of giving up work because it's just me and Derriawn. "Everything I do is for him." Before becoming a mum, Derricka said she "worked hard and played harder". Working as a certified nursing assistant for seven years, she then got into marketing recruitment - a job which saw her work up to 50 hours a week. "I lived for my job, I wanted to be successful in my career," Derricka said. "I worked hard but played harder. "I only had myself to take care of and I could do whatever I wanted." Life changed when Derricka unexpectedly fell pregnant in October 2023 and she "decided to go it alone". After an "emotionally intense" pregnancy, on June 28, 2024, she welcomed her son, Derriawn David D'Angelo, two weeks past his due date. Taking her three-month paid maternity leave, in September 2024, Derricka returned to work. Despite having help from her grandma and mum, Dawn Bellmy, 50, who works in healthcare, on the weekends, in March 2025 Derricka began to struggle with the demands of her work and home life. She said: "My grandma wasn't able to have Derriawn as he got too heavy for her to lift on her own, and my mum works full-time during the week. "In March, Derriawn started contracting chronic ear infections one after the other. "He'd cry relentlessly throughout the night because he was in so much pain, which meant I got little to no sleep and struggled to function at work the next day. "It was heartbreaking to see as his mum. "In May, he contracted salmonella too. "Taking him back and forth to doctors and caring for him meant unpaid time off work. "He hasn't gotten better, and doctors aren't able to recommend further than the antibiotics that he's taking. "Corporate America is a beast, but I'm always going to put my son first. "Having him was my beautiful accident. "That's why being a mum ruined my career, but I don't regret it for a second." Posting an honest rant on TikTok on June 20, it has amassed more than 600,000 views. Derricka said: "I didn't expect so many people to watch me in that video, I just wanted to voice how frustrated I was feeling with it all. "Some people have commented, 'should have kept your legs closed' and 'where's the dad?'. "I just try and laugh it off. "I'm a single mum and I'm proud of it. "But other people have reached out with messages of support or said they can relate. "That's the point, motherhood is unpredictable. You don't know what it will chuck at you. "My son is my whole world; everything I do is for him. "I think I'm one and done, I couldn't handle another kid at the moment - I don't think my career would survive it either." Meanwhile, it seems Derricka isn't the only mum struggling. A mum has shared a brutally honest post about how she regrets having a baby and wishes she never had, as parenthood has turned her into a "shell of her former self". Elsewhere, one mum revealed she 'contracted a cold when pregnant and didn't even know' she had it, leaving her baby girl brain damaged for life'. Plus, another mum was left fuming after stranger leaves most passive aggressive note ever on her car BANNING her from using parent parking spot.
