New cast members and first looks revealed as Harry Potter TV series begins production
On Tuesday, a new round of actors was announced. Rory Wilmot will play Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson will be Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey will embody Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser will take on Garrick Ollivander.
What will it be about?
According to HBO, the new series will be 'a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books', and 'will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years'.
The TV show is therefore expected to resemble the original eight films relatively closely, meaning it will follow Harry's discovery that he is a wizard, his departure from his muggle family, his entry to Hogwarts, his adventures alongside Hermione and Ron, and his near-death encounters with He Who Shall Not Be Named (aka the big bad, Lord Voldemort).
However, since TV series usually end up being significantly longer than feature films, the series is expected to explore more of the books' plotlines in greater detail. Each of the seven Harry Potter novels will make up an entire season.
How do people feel about it so far?
Anticipation for the newest adaptation has been steadily building since its announcement in 2023. However, some fans of the films have expressed disappointment over how starkly similar the production shots are to that of the original screen adaptation.
'There is … a thesis to be written on the autocannibalism of pop culture,' one X user wrote. 'The evolution of pop culture from 'new things based on old things' (Star Wars) to 'new takes on old things' (Tim Burton's Batman) to 'new versions of old things that look just like the old things'.'
This is compounded by the controversy around J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels. She has been accused of transphobia for her views on gender identity and for suggesting that trans issues affect women's rights.
Over the years, Rowling has contributed money to anti-trans crowdfunding campaigns and also vocally opposed Scotland's gender recognition bill in 2022. She donated £70,000 ($143,700) to For Women Scotland, which launched a legal challenge that resulted in the UK Supreme Court ruling in April that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.
Her views have led some fans to boycott the Harry Potter franchise, including its books, the movies, the video game Hogwarts Legacy, and presumably also the upcoming TV adaptation.
Meanwhile, others are questioning whether the TV remake is necessary given the major success of both the books and the eight films.

'Irrespective of J.K. Rowling, this remake is so redundant,' one X user wrote, to which another commented: 'Is it a remake, or an expansion of the story that wasn't told in the books/movies? If it is just a made-for-TV remake, then no. Completely unnecessary. Go watch the movies.'
Is J.K. Rowling involved?
The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, which some fans believe suggests she will be more involved in the upcoming series compared to the films.
'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!' Rowling wrote on X in June. Replying to a comment asking whether she wrote any of the series' scripts, she said, 'no, but I've worked closely with the extremely talented writers.'
Beyond Rowling, the show will be led by Francesca Gardiner and directed by Mark Mylod, both of whom worked on Succession.
When can we watch season one?
The first season is expected to debut on HBO Max in 2027. According to Variety, shooting on season one is expected to last until the autumn of 2026, with season two then going into production after a short break.

‘He can finally tell his story': Prince Harry's sworn enemy Paul Burrell set to pen another memoir about the royal family
Former royal butler Paul Burrell is gearing up to release a bombshell new book two and a half years after he was slammed in Prince Harry's best-selling memoir Spare. Mr Burrell served as Princess Diana's butler and confidante for a decade from 1987 until her death in August 1997, before becoming one of the UK's best known royal commentators. On Monday, it was confirmed his book The Royal Insider – with a picture of himself and Diana on the cover – is due out for release in September. According to the Daily Mail, the monarchy is bracing for more bad press as Mr Burrell vows to 'speak candidly about the tensions that simmered' during his time at the Palace. 'It is only in the wake of the Queen's passing Burrell feels he can finally tell his story in full,' Mr Burrell's publisher Sphere told the outlet. Reportedly, the book will include candid new details about the demise of Diana's marriage to King Charles, as well as the King's relationships with both of his sons. The new memoir will mark the third book by Mr Burrell detailing his life in the palace with Diana, Charles and Princes William and Harry. William and Harry were reportedly infuriated by the previous two books, and Mr Burrell emerged as something of a villain in Harry's own tell-all book. In his memoir, the Duke of Sussex makes specific references to Mr Burrell but refuses to name the former staffer and calls him only 'mummy's butler'. In one passage, Hary fumed that Mr Burrell 'made his blood boil'. 'Mummy's former butler had penned a tell-all which actually told nothing,' he wrote. 'It was merely one man's self-justifying, self-centring version of events. 'My mother once called this butler a dear friend, trusted him implicitly. We did too. Now this. 'He was milking her disappearance for money. It made my blood boil.' In January, Mr Burrell himself told that he had experienced Harry's 'petulant behaviour' firsthand after Vanity Fair wrote an expose about the Sussexes. 'I know from firsthand experience how difficult Harry can be,' he said. 'I know how petulant he can be and how spoiled he is, because I've experienced that myself. 'He's always lived in a bubble.'

Marc Maron paid $50,000 to use Taylor Swift's Bigger Than The Whole Sky in his comedy special
Marc Maron paid $50,000 to secure the rights to Taylor Swift's song Bigger Than The Whole Sky for use in his upcoming HBO comedy special, Marc Maron: Panicked. The 61-year-old stand-up uses the tear-jerking ballad from the pop superstar's Midnights (3am Edition) album at the end of his routine and they just about managed to pay the fee to use a snippet of the track after the money started running out. After getting in touch with the track's co-writer, Jack Antonoff, who happened to be a friend of Marc, they managed to get in touch with the right people to agree a figure for the usage. The GLOW star said on the Vulture's Good One podcast: 'I think it came out to $50K, around that. 'I did everything I could to get the joke in front of her.' He continued: "I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him, and he's the co-writer on that song. 'I said, 'I don't know what's proper or how to do this, but we're running out of money on this thing. It's probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?'' Fortunately, the ticket sales for the show meant it didn't have to come out of Marc's own pocket. He added: 'It was doable. We made enough money. It was tight, but because of the ticket sales for the special, we were able to get that song.' Being able to use Bigger Than The Whole Sky - which tackles grief - was a big deal to Marc. He explained: 'My relationship with that song, and just the fact that I'm playing it on my phone. 'It had to happen.' Taylor's music has also appeared in the likes of The Summer I Turned Pretty and The Handmaid's Tale. Elisabeth Moss wrote a heartfelt letter to Taylor, 35, in a bid to get permission to use one of her songs in an episode of The Handmaid's Tale. The 43-year-old actress explained how much the Grammy winner's "her music means" to her and how the inclusion of the track Look What You Made Me Do would help the show - and she was delighted when Taylor agreed for the song to be used. Elisabeth told Entertainment Tonight: "We've been so excited ... Honestly the feedback was her saying yes. For me, that was really, truly such an honour that she took the time to read, you know I wrote her a letter about what I felt the song meant for the episode and her music means to me and our cast. "So the fact that she said yes to me was all the feedback that I needed. " The song was featured in episode nine of the sixth season of The Handmaid's Tale, which aired in May, and Elisabeth previously revealed she'd wanted to include a Swift song in the series for years and she'd finally found the "perfect moment". Elisabeth told Billboard: "I've been wanting to use a Taylor song for many years on the show and we finally found the perfect spot for a track from her, and I'm so glad we waited because there could not be a more perfect song for a more perfect moment. "Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally. As a Swiftie myself, and I think I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, who are all Swifties, it's such an honour to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show."
