Bowden Singleton helps push Calgary Canucks into Centennial Cup playoffs with chip on shoulder
Article content
But the local puck talent still lived the heartbreak felt by the Calgary Canucks at the Canadian Junior Hockey League championship.

And the diminutive forward plans to help the Alberta Junior Hockey League kings push through that at this year's national finale hosted at the city's Max Bell Centre.

'Playing with a chip on my shoulder,' confirmed the Canucks captain, who was sidelined by injury last spring when his teammates fell short of the coveted junior hockey crown by two victories in Oakville, Ont.

'But I'm playing with excitement,' continued Singleton. 'I've never been here before, so it's uncharted territory. But I was there watching last year, so I kind of knew what's going on, so super exciting.'
Article content
It has been all that and more for not only Singleton but the entire host squad so far at this Centennial Cup.

After Wednesday night's 8-2 thump of the CJHL's top-ranked team, New Brunswick's Edmundston Blizzard, the Canucks are playoff-bound at the 11-day tournament.
In fact, their first-place Group B record of 3W-0OTW-1L-0OTL actually earns them a bye through Friday's quarterfinal round and slots them into a Saturday semifinal — which of the 4 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. game starts is yet to be determined.

Regardless, their success puts them just two wins away — again — from hoisting the Centennial Cup.

Capturing the national championship has only happened once — back in 1995, when the Canucks edged the host Gloucester Rangers 5-4 in Ontario — in the junior team's storied history.
Article content
Of course, this year's edition is hoping to be a winning host side this time around not only to add to that singular title but to avenge last year's early elimination in a 2-1 semifinal loss to Saskatchewan's Melfort Mustangs.

'He's a game-breaker,' said Moran of Singleton, who stands in at just 5-foot-9, 160 lb. 'I think he's the best offensive guy in the AJHL, no question. And he drives our offence. We saw that in the playoffs with him being the MVP.
Article content
'You know … Bowden's the kind of guy that put you over the hump in these things,' continued Moran. 'And last year, we scored only one goal in the semifinal. If there's Bowden Singleton there, you'd like to think you get a point out of him and it's a 2-2 game and anybody can win.

Caleb Williams looks sharp in Ben Johnson's offense as Bears rout Bills 38-0 in preseason
CHICAGO (AP) — Caleb Williams took advantage of his first preseason playing time, connecting with Olamide Zaccheaus for a 36-yard touchdown on the opening drive as the Chicago Bears cruised to 38-0 preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. After sitting out a 24-24 tie with Miami last week, Williams came out firing against Buffalo (0-2) in his first chance to operate coach Ben Johnson's offense during a game. The first pick in the 2024 draft completed throws of 18 yards to rookie first-round pick Colston Loveland and 29 yards to tight end Cole Kmet on a game-opening 92-yard march that concluded when Zaccheaus snagged a throw in the middle of the field on third-and-6, hurdled a tackler and went the distance. Williams' play throughout training camp has been spotty but he was sharp from the start. He hit on six of his first seven throws, then left after the second possession. He finished 6 of 10 for 102 yards. Tyson Bagent came on to lead three second-quarter touchdown drives as the Bears (1-0-1) took a 28-0 halftime lead. Bagent finished a 61-yard drive by rifling a 10-yard strike in the corner of the end zone to Tyler Scott. Before halftime, newly acquired Bears running back Brittain Brown finished an 86-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge, and Ian Wheeler's 1-yard TD run completed an 84-yard drive. Bills coach Sean McDermott held reigning MVP Josh Allen and all of his other starters out of the game. Buffalo's backups struggled throughout the first half on both sides of the ball. After Wheeler's TD plunge, the Bears had outgained the Bills 343 yards to 22 and owned an 18-1 advantage in first downs. Bagent played until midway through the third quarter and went 13 of 22 for 197 yards, while Wheeler rushed 19 times for 80 yards and Brown 16 times for 73 yards. Former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky relieved Bills starter Mike White and completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards. White went 4 of 11 for 54 yards. Waiting it out Allen hasn't played in either of Buffalo's preseason games. He has thrown at least three passes in every preseason since he came into the league in 2018. Also held out was running back James Cook, who had been staging a hold-in before getting a contract extension. Cook returned to practice this week. Injuries Bills: DB Jordan Hancock left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. Bears: Second-year DE Austin Booker injured a knee covering a kick return and did not return. Booker was off to a fast start with 4 1/2 preseason sacks, including 1 1/2 in the first half against the Bills. … Rookie RB Deion Hankins suffered a knee injury on the second possession and did not return. The Bears were already without RBs Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer. … CB Terell Smith suffered a knee injury while making a tackle just before halftime and left the field on a cart. … DE Dominique Robinson left in the second half with an ankle injury. … Rookie WR J.P. Richardson (ankle) left in the fourth quarter. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Up next Bills: Wrap up the preseason by playing at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Bears: Finish the preseason Friday at Kansas City. ___ AP NFL:

Eovaldi solid over seven innings, Rangers beat Blue Jays 10-4 to avoid series sweep
TORONTO – Solo homers from Alejandro Kirk and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were the only blemishes in Nathan Eovaldi's effective seven innings as the Texas Rangers managed a 10-4 win in the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. Former Blue Jays infielder Marcus Semien and Wyatt Langford smacked two-run homers in the second and sixth innings, respectively, to help the Rangers (62-63) end a four-game slide. Eovaldi (11-3) allowed five hits, striking out six with no walks in his 97-pitch performance. The Rangers enjoyed a 2-0 lead when Kirk hit his homer in the second inning and were ahead 8-1 when Guerrero belted his 439-foot monster to left field for his 21st with two out in the sixth inning. Jose Berrios (9-5) was not sharp as his four-game win streak came to an end, as did the Blue Jays' (73-52) three-game run before 42,549 at Rogers Centre. He lasted only 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits, including the two homers. He struck out two Rangers. The Rangers enjoyed a 5-1 advantage after Jake Burger's single scored Semien, and a two-out single from catcher Jonah Heim scored two more. All three runs came with two out in the fourth. George Springer belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning off reliever Hoby Milner in Springer's second game back after missing 15 outings with a concussion. Evan Carter answered with a two-run blast in the ninth. Takeaways Rangers: After going hitless in his first eight at-bats in the series, two-time World Series champion and MVP Corey Seager knocked a one-out solo shot down the left-field line in the fifth inning. Blue Jays: Named Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt as starters against the Pittsburgh Pirates, meaning newcomer Shane Bieber likely will make his debut against the Miami Marlins on Friday. Key moment Heim's bouncer up the middle cashed in two runs in the fourth inning to increase Texas's lead to 5-1. Like Semien, Heim enjoyed a three-hit outing. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Key stat The Blue Jays missed a chance for their 10th series sweep, which would have matched them with the Milwaukee Brewers for the most in 2025. Up next Toronto begins a six-game road trip in Pittsburgh on Monday and concludes with a weekend series in Miami. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 17, 2025.
