Apple iPhone 17 Pro: Rumoured features, UAE price and release date

Khaleej Timesa day ago
All eyes are on Apple's next big reveal: the iPhone 17 lineup. Although Apple hasn't officially confirmed its launch event, sources suggest an usual reveal date of Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with global availability to follow shortly after. In the UAE, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to retail from Dh4,499 onwards.
With just weeks to go, here's your comprehensive look at the latest rumours and expectations for the iPhone 17 Pro, arguably the most anticipated variant in the lineup that also includes the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air.
Design and display
Unlike the titanium body of the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro models, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to revert to an aluminium frame. It's expected to feature a unique part-aluminium, part-glass rear panel and a striking rectangular camera bump, giving it a fresh aesthetic within Apple's design language.
One of the more exciting visual enhancements is a rumoured anti-reflective, matte-finish display. This could be similar to Apple's nano-texture glass seen on the iMac and iPad Pro, ideal for minimising glare and fingerprints.
All iPhone 17 models are said to include a redesigned Dynamic Island, potentially smaller and more functional.
Cameras
Apple may take a giant leap in telephoto photography this year. The iPhone 17 Pro models are rumoured to feature a 48MP Telephoto lens, a major jump from the 12MP on the iPhone 16 Pro. Expect 5x and 8x optical zoom via a moving lens system.
The front camera is also getting a significant boost, with all iPhone 17 models expected to pack a 24MP front-facing camera, doubling the current resolution.
According to MacRumors, iPhone 17 Pro models may allow users to record video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously in the Camera app.
Power, performance, and battery
Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Pro is said to run on the new A19 Pro chip, built on TSMC's 3rd-gen 3nm process. That means enhanced performance and energy efficiency, perfect for powering Apple Intelligence features and multitasking.
Supporting this are 12GB of RAM, a jump from the 8GB found in the iPhone 16 series, and a vapor chamber cooling system for better heat dissipation during heavy use.
For users prioritizing battery life, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will reportedly surpass 5,000 mAh, thanks to a slightly thicker design.
Colours, pricing, and availability in the UAE
Among the new finishes, a copper/orange shade is expected to debut, alongside a new Dark Blue option.
In the UAE, the iPhone 17 Pro is anticipated to launch at AED 4,499, with availability likely between September 8–10, 2025, according to predictions by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple to announce new $100bn investment in US manufacturing

Apple was set to announce plans on Wednesday to invest another $100 billion in US manufacturing, as the iPhone maker seeks to avoid President Donald Trump's tariffs. The new commitment would bring its total pledge to invest in the US to $600 billion over the next four years. The company pledged in February to invest $500 billion and hire 20,000 workers. The investment was also expected to include moving towards assembling more critical components in the US, Reuters reported, quoting a White House official. The announcement comes after Mr Trump threatened to hit the Big Tech giant with a 25 per cent tariff for making its flagship devices outside the US. Apple shares were 5.91 per cent higher at $214.92 during afternoon trading. In the company's earnings call last week, Apple chief Tim Cook told investors that it had taken a hit of about $800 million from tariff-related costs last quarter and about $1.1 billion this quarter. Mr Cook told analysts during the call that the 'vast majority' of iPhones sold in the US come from India. Most other Apple products such as MacBooks and iPads that are sold in the US are made in Vietnam, he said. 'We obviously try to optimise our supply chain,' Mr Cook said at the time. 'And ultimately, we will do more in the United States.' Apple had planned this year to switch its assembly for all US-destined iPhones from China to India to avoid the escalatory tariffs Mr Trump had placed on Beijing. During his visit to Qatar this year, Mr Trump said there was 'a little problem' with Apple and recalled a conversation he had with Mr Cook in which the President said he did not want the company building in India. India has lately been in Mr Trump's crosshairs. The President on Wednesday imposed a 25 per cent tariff on New Delhi for buying Russian oil. The new tariff, due to take effect in three weeks, comes on top of a previously announced 25 per cent tariff that was set to be implemented on Wednesday. Mr Trump has accused the country of indirectly or directly buying Russian oil. India condemned the latest action as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable'. It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine. Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, 'several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu's government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages]. The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a 'biblical famine' and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation. Band Aid Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts. With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it's Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians. Following the single's success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved. Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world. The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion. Watch: Sheikh Mohammed waves at humanoid robot during live demonstration

When was the last time you saw a humanoid robot wave and walk towards you? Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, had an experience that not many residents get to have during a meeting with local dignitaries at the Union House in Dubai today, August 6. In a video posted by Wam, the leader could be seen waving back at the humanoid robot. The robot also showcased its speed by running inside the majlis as the dignitaries looked on. The robot was present as part of a live demonstration of the Unitree G1 by Dubai Future Labs. The lightweight, highly balanced robot mimics human movement and represents the latest in robotics and AI. Watch the clip below: It will soon be featured in the Museum of the Future's interactive displays, welcoming visitors and showcasing advanced technology, allowing residents and tourists to watch it in action too. The Unitree G1 is a humanoid robot that stands 130cm tall and weighs around 35kg. Its onboard computing includes an 8-core high-performance CPU, with sensory hardware like a depth camera, 3D LiDAR, microphone array, speaker, Wi‑Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2. The robot runs for about two hours on a 13‑string lithium battery. Meeting at Al Mudaif Majlis During the gathering, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the UAE's continued progress in building a distinctive development model based on openness, competitiveness, and support for entrepreneurship. He noted that the country's success stems from ambitious goals, a people-centred approach, and strong public-private partnerships. The achievements of recent decades, he added, reflect a clear vision driven by planning, determination, and collaboration. He added that the UAE remains committed to being a land of opportunity, a hub for prosperity, and a welcoming home for all who contribute to its growth. He also said that at every stage, the UAE has set new benchmarks for progress and established a model economy rooted in innovation. The outcomes of this journey are evident today in the country's stability, social cohesion, and the resilience and growth of its economy. The Ruler also highlighted Dubai's vital role in the UAE's broader development journey, as it continues to strengthen its position as a leading global economic centre. Driven by investor confidence, market maturity, and its ability to attract top talent and opportunities, the emirate continues to advance the goals of Dubai Economic Agenda D33, he highlighted.

Apple to pledge $100 billion for US manufacturing, White House official says

Apple Inc will announce a domestic manufacturing pledge of $100 billion on Wednesday that will focus on bringing more manufacturing to the United States, a White House official said. The pledge would be a new financial commitment, the official said on the customary condition of anonymity. It comes as President Donald Trump pursues an aggressive tariff and trade agenda aimed at moving some manufacturing back into the United States. Apple said in February it would spend $500 billion in U.S. investments in the next four years that will include a giant factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers while adding about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump's tariffs cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter and spurred some customers to buy iPhones in late spring this year. Apple has been shifting production of products bound for the U.S., sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. The ultimate tariff rates many Apple products could face remain in flux, and many of its products are currently exempt. "Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. The previously announced $500 billion in expected spending from Apple includes everything from purchases from U.S. suppliers to U.S. filming of television shows and movies for its Apple TV+ service. Nancy Tengler, CEO and CIO of Laffer Tengler Investments, which holds Apple shares, said the announcement would be a "savvy solution to the president's demand that Apple manufacture all iPhones in the U.S. "The stock is up on the news, likely a relief rally that (Apple CEO Tim) Cook, who has been largely mute in response to the attacks on the company, is extending an olive branch." Earlier, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett told Fox Business Network that Apple was likely to make an investment announcement on Wednesday, as he discussed the financial pledges made by companies and countries under Trump.
