Paul Costa quells concerns over bizarre shaking after UFC 318 win

USA Today20-07-2025
NEW ORLEANS – Paulo Costa's shaking at the UFC 318 pre-fight news conference had some viewers scratching their heads, while others were concerned.
But immediately following his win Saturday at Smoothie King Center, Costa (15-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) said there's no need to worry, even though he was seen rapidly bouncing in his seat during Thursday's pre-fight festivity.
Costa explained there were no external substances or health conditions to blame for the bizarre visual – only intensity.
"First of all, the people said I was shaking," Costa said. "I was not sick or nothing. I didn't use any powder or something like that. I was just very motivated, very focused, very locked in on this fight. In the backstage, I was telling to myself, relaying to myself the whole time, 'This is war. Go to war. Do your thing. You need this victory. I will not be back without this victory.' So I was locked in. I was 100 percent focused on this fight, this match. I know this was a very tough opponent."
"Hunter told me, 'Paulo, this is a great matchup.' I was the co-main event. Even Marvin (Vettori) and (Brendan) Allen, they both (are) above me in the rankings. But we are here in the co-main event, because the UFC knows this was going to be a great matchup, a great fight, a great comeback for me. So I put too much concentration on this fight and this victory."
Costa's intensity paid off. He defeated Roman Kopylov (14-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) in the co-main event. The win snapped a two-fight losing skid.

Sean Strickland: Khamzat Chimaev's extreme ground pressure may surprise Dricus Du Plessis

Sean Strickland wonders how Dricus Du Plessis will react to Khamzat Chimaev's dominant ground game. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his UFC middleweight title against undefeated Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+, ESPN, pay-per-view). Strickland lost to Du Plessis twice by decision in title fights, and spent quite a bit of time training with Chimaev years ago at Xtreme Couture. The former middleweight champion thinks it'll come down to if Du Plessis can remain mentally unfazed from Chimaev's early onslaught. "Dricus has better standup than Chimaev, but Chimaev has pretty crazy grappling," Strickland told Red Corner MMA. "I've been training with these f*cking Dagi terrorists my entire life. I know how to get up from these guys. I can withstand the storm. I don't know if he's encountered that level of wrestling to where it might get him a little off guard. "But if he could handle it, get up, and work his way up – I mean, it's kind of hard because it was a long time ago, but Brad (Tavares) took him down and held him down, so it's like, he just really has to be ready for an extreme amount of pressure on the ground. If he can withstand that, he's going to beat him." Strickland says Chimaev is only capable of being the hammer, not the nail, in a fight. "He's like a soft man," Strickland said. "You take someone like Dricus, Dricus will f*cking die. That man doesn't give a f*ck. Chimaev wins off being a bad guy. 'I'm a bad, tough, scary f*cking terrorist.' If you look at everybody who he's fought, that pulls his card: 'All right, f*ck it – let's go.' Sh*t starts changing. I just think he's some kind of a bully. Nothing wrong with being a bully. It's a fight – be a bully. But it's like, if you're going to be a bully and somebody fights back, you better keep that same energy up."

Dominick Reyes: UFC champ Magomed Ankalaev and I are very similar, 'but I'm just better'

Dominick Reyes has got his mojo back ahead of his potential title eliminator vs. Carlos Ulberg. Reyes (14-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) takes on Ulberg (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in a 205-pound UFC Fight Night main event on Sept. 27 from RAC Arena in Perth in Western Australia. Light heavyweight champion Ankalaev (21-1-1 MMA, 12-1-1 UFC) will run things back with Alex Pereira (12-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) in the UFC 320 headliner on Oct. 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. With Jiri Prochazka facing Khalil Rountree on the same card, Reyes admits he might have to wait for his shot if he gets past Ulberg. But having trained with Pereira before, Reyes prefers fighting Ankalaev – a matchup he likes for himself. "I'd much rather fight Ankalaev for sure," Reyes told Submission Radio. "Honestly, I feel like me and Ankalaev are very similar, but I'm just better. We have a very similar fighting style. I think it's almost the same, but he's a little bit more technical than I am in terms of patience, and I'm more willing to jump in the fire." Reyes admits he was surprised with Pereira's approach in his title loss to Ankalaev at UFC 313 in March. "I think it will be different in the sense that Alex actually had time off, and he's had time to better prepare," Reyes said. "He fought, what, four times in a year or something? I think him losing that fight made him have to dig in more. I think it will be a different fight. Alex has worked extremely hard, and he's very focused. "Don't get me wrong: Ankalaev is very good fighter. Alex looked lackluster in the last fight,, which is rare. He didn't pull the trigger, which is not very common for him. It could have just been Ankalaev's movement, and his threat of the takedown, kept Alex on his heels."

Marlon Vera returns to face Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Fight Night 262 in Vancouver

A matchup between UFC-ranked top 10 bantamweights is heading to Canada. At UFC Fight Night 262 on Oct. 18 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, former title challenger Marlon Vera will face Aiemann Zahabi in his home country. The promotion officially announced the matchup Thursday evening. Ecuador's Vera (23-10-1 MMA, 15-9 UFC) will look to get back on track after dropping two straight. His last victory over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292 earned him a title shot against Sean O'Malley at UFC 299, in which he came up short. His last fight was a decision loss to former flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo. "Chito" is currently ranked No. 7 by the promotion. Three spots behind at No. 10 is Canada's Zahabi (13-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), who has been on a hot streak since 2021. After dropping back-to-back fights against Ricardo Ramos and Vince Morales, Zahabi has become a force in the bantamweight division. He is currently on a six-fight winning streak that includes two first-round stoppages. His most recent outing in May at UFC 315 was a unanimous decision win over former champion Jose Aldo. With the addition, the current UFC Fight Night 262 lineup includes:
