Australia's Will Pucovski retires from all cricket after repeated concussions
Listen to article
Australia's Will Pucovski has announced his retirement from all levels of cricket at age 27, citing medical advice following multiple concussions throughout his career.
Former Test opener Will Pucovski has retired from cricket after ongoing struggles with concussion, ending a career that began with high expectations but was repeatedly disrupted by head injuries.
The 27-year-old confirmed his decision during an interview on SEN Mornings, saying the past year had been 'really difficult.'
'I'm not going to be playing cricket again. I'd need a few hours to take you through the whole journey, but the simple message is I won't be playing cricket at any level again,' said Pucovski.
'There's been an illustrious group of one-Test players. Unfortunately, that's where my journey ends.'
Pucovski suffered his most recent concussion in March 2024 during a Sheffield Shield match. Struck on the helmet, he was forced to retire hurt and missed the rest of the Australian season. He later withdrew from a contract with Leicestershire ahead of the 2024 English summer.
A medical panel advised the Victoria batter to step away from the game permanently following the incident.
Pucovski made his Test debut for Australia in the 2020/21 series against India, scoring 62 and 10 in his only appearance at international level. In 36 first-class matches, he amassed 2,350 runs at an average of 45.19, with seven centuries.
He had long been regarded as a future mainstay of Australia's top order, but his career was hindered by more than 10 concussions sustained through a mix of on-field incidents and non-sporting causes.
His decision to retire marks an early and unfortunate end to a career once considered among the most promising in Australian cricket.

Australia's Hazlewood returns for WTC final against South Africa
LONDON: Marnus Labuschagne will open the batting for Australia and Josh Hazlewood has been selected in the bowling line-up for the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's, captain Pat Cummins said on the eve of the game on Tuesday. Labuschagne has been moved up the order to accommodate the return of Cameron Green, who underwent back surgery in October and was ruled out of the home season, while Hazlewood is fit again after a calf injury to replace of Scott Boland. 'Cam Green has been coming back in great form in the last few weeks and we thought he deserved a spot in the batting lineup. We thought three probably suits him best,' Cummins told a press conference. 'For Marnus moving one spot up, it's not too different to batting at three. He's done well here in England in the past.' Leaving out Boland, who had been one of the heroes of Australia's 3-1 Test series win over India this year, had been a difficult decision. 'There are some guys where you genuinely say, you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing and that's Scotty. He is just really unfortunate to miss out. 'The message to Scotty is there's a lot of Test cricket coming up in the next couple of years and just because your mid-30s doesn't mean that's the end of your career. 'By having a squad of fast bowlers, hopefully we can extend all our care for an extra couple of years.' An element of selection criteria was to reward those who had contributed to defending champions Australia winning 13 of 19 Tests in the two-year WTC cycle and reaching yet another final. 'I think our selectors have probably shown you that they're happy and they'd rather give someone an extra little run than pull the pin too early. I think it's partly rewarding those guys that got us here.' Cummings said defending the title was high on the Australian priority list, even after all their success in the limited-overs formats. 'It's a trophy we've spoken a lot about over the last couple of years. 'Test cricket is my favourite format. You've got to basically win in all different conditions to make it into this final. If we can retain that mace, that's a pretty awesome thing for this team.' Australia team: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Drugs ban gives Rabada extra motivation for WTC final, says Bavuma
LONDON: South Africa are backing fast bowler Kagiso Rabada to bring extra motivation to the World Test Championship final against Australia after serving a one-month drugs ban. Rabada tested positive for cocaine in January, which was only revealed in April, and served a one-month ban while competing in the Indian Premier League. It has been an embarrassing episode for the 30-year-old Rabada, second in the world Test bowling rankings, but his captain Temba Bavuma said he expected it would fire him up for the game at Lord's starting on Wednesday. 'It's definitely a motivation. It's been a couple of weeks now that everything has unfolded,' Bavuma told a press conference on Tuesday. 'He had a conversation with the team and put himself on the spot for further questioning from any of the players. As far as we are concerned, that's kind of behind us, we really come here with the focus of what we need to do. Rabada tested positive for cocaine, says South African testing agency 'And I think he's in the best shape that he's ever been. Playing against the Australians as well, that'll be extra motivation for him. I think he's in a very good space.' Rabada will lead the attack along with Marco Jansen, with Lungi Ngidi as first change after he was preferred in the team to veteran seamer Dane Paterson, who had been in contention for a place because of his experience on English wickets. 'It's probably one of the tougher decisions that we've have to make. It was more from a tactical point of view; probably a little bit more pace coming from Lungi,' Bavuma said. South Africa have also promoted all-rounder Wiaan Mulder up to number three in the batting order. 'He's quite young, obviously, in that position. But having seen the way he's kind of grown in the last two years within the red-ball game, it's about giving him a lot more confidence, backing him, and just allowing him to do what he does best,' Bavuma said. South Africa are competing in the final for the first time while Australia are defending champions. South Africa team: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (captain), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi,

Spurs women coach Vilahamn sacked after poor season
Tottenham Hotspur have sacked their women's team coach Robert Vilahamn after the club finished 11th in the Women's Super League, the club said on Sunday. Just like the men's side this season, the women's team also finished one spot above the relegation zone, recording only five wins from 22 matches. Swedish coach Vilahamn had guided Spurs to sixth the previous year while they also finished runners-up in the FA Cup. But this season they suffered some heavy defeats by Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, finishing the campaign without a win in their last 10 league games. 'There have been some special moments during Robert's tenure, including reaching the FA Cup final for the first time,' the club said in a statement. 'However, results and performances this season have not been to the level we would expect and now is the right time to make a change. 'We should like to thank Robert for his professionalism and efforts over the past two seasons, and we wish him well for the future.' Vilahamn's departure comes two days after the club sacked men's team coach Ange Postecoglou. The Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League but Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League.
