John Singer Sargent's 1884 portrait of Virginie Avegno Gautreau, universally acclaimed as Madame X, is a definitive study in image-making. La Gautreau flaunts her otherworldly looks and her chosen role as that exotic ornament to society, a professional beauty. She is a sphinx without a secret, 'prophetic of all the sophisticated chic of Vogue,' as Philippe Jullian, historian of fin-de-siècle culture, noted in 1965. But who was this fascinator whose mystery remains compelling more than a century after Sargent captured it in sensual oil paints?
John Singer Sargent, whose career is celebrated in a retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from February 21 to May 31 (and then traveling to Boston), with a related show of drawings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from February 14 through May 9, was born in Florence in 1856. His American parents led peripatetic lives and raised their children gypsy fashion, traveling restlessly across Europe. By the early 1880s, after a solid schooling in the atelier of the respected academician Carolus-Duran and at the École des Beaux-Arts, Sargent was already establishing a name for himself in Paris as both a portraitist and a painter of exotic genre scenes of Italy, Spain, France, and Morocco. It seems inevitable that he should have been bewitched by the notorious Victoire Gautreau since throughout his career, Sargent was drawn to unconventionally exotic beauties. He had already delighted in the feral charms of Rosina Ferrara, a Capri girl, and mysterious Moroccan beauties like the one imbibing incense in his Fumée d'Ambre Gris, painted in 1880. Later, he produced some of his most spirited portraits when presented with sitters like the haughty Spanish dancer Carmencita; the art dealer Asher Wertheimer's lively daughters Almina, Ena, and Betty; the madcap Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney; and Vaslav Nijinsky. He called the fabulous and extravagant beauty Rita de Acosta Lydig 'Art in its living form,' and presumably Madame Pierre Gautreau's symbolist looks inspired similar sentiments.
Sargent found her 'strange, weird, fantastic, curious.' Fascinated, he determined to capture her as a sitter, and he embarked on an elaborate courtship. He began by enlisting the help of a mutual friend, Ben del Castillo, to whom he wrote, 'I have a great desire to paint her portrait and have reason to think she would allow it and is waiting for someone to propose this homage to her beauty... tell her that I am a man of prodigious talent.' Virginie Gautreau conceded. The sittings began in Paris in 1883, and that summer Sargent set off for the Gautreaus' country estate, the Château des Chesnes at Paramé in Brittany. Here, among the immemorial oaks that gave the 1708 house its name, the Gautreaus had planted clumps of pampas grasses and tropical palms in accordance with the fashionably exotic taste of Troisième République society.

Unpacking reports Tom Cruise refused Kennedy Center award from Trump

In August 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the annual Kennedy Center Honors, an award given to those who have made significant contributions to arts and culture. The announcement of the awards ceremony, scheduled to be held in December 2025, named actor Sylvester Stallone, singer Gloria Gaynor and rock band KISS, among others, as recipients. However, according to several reports, one notable name — Tom Cruise — declined to receive the honor. Social media users on X and Facebook (archived) spread the claim and praised the actor's supposed decision. Numerous Snopes readers also searched our website and asked us if it was true that Cruise declined to be honored at the Kennedy Center by Trump. Anonymous Kennedy Center employees were the main sources of this news, per The Washington Post. Unnamed individuals told the newspaper that Cruise declined the award on account of scheduling conflicts. Snopes does not rely on anonymous sources and could not independently verify the credibility of the sources the Post used in its report. We reached out to Cruise's public relations team and the Kennedy Center and will update this story if we get more information. Given that Cruise's team has so far declined to comment to the media and the claim's original sources were anonymous, we were unable to rate this claim nor the implication by some that Cruise's supposed decision to decline the award was politically motivated. The Post simply stated: Actor Tom Cruise was offered the honors but declined because of scheduling conflicts, according to several current and former Kennedy Center employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss event plans. A spokesperson for Cruise declined to comment. While some (archived) social media users (archived) appeared to imply that Cruise's supposed rejection of a Kennedy Center Honor was politically motivated, we found no evidence of this implication. In May 2025, during a press event for his newest Mission: Impossible movie, Cruise sidestepped a question about Trump's tariffs, answering, "We'd rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you." Cruise has not joined other celebrities like Taylor Swift (archived) or Sylvester Stallone — one of Trump's Kennedy Center honorees — in endorsing a particular political party or politician. When selecting this year's honorees, Trump reportedly said at a March 2025 Kennedy Center board meeting, "We'll go slightly more conservative, if you don't mind, with some of the people. There are people out there that would not be considered that are much bigger stars than the ones that were being honored." Snopes has frequently covered rumors about Cruise, including the fake story that he walked off "The View" after being questioned about Scientology, a movement the actor is an outspoken advocate for. Dean Cain fires back at John Leguizamo's attack, Hollywood backlash as former 'Superman' star joins ICE

Actor Dean Cain says he's unfazed by the wave of backlash over his decision to join U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "I'm not worried about Hollywood attacking me," said Cain on the "Brian Kilmeade Show" Thursday. "They can attack all they want to." The 59-year-old, best known for playing Superman, is set to be sworn in as an agent next week, building on his current role as a deputy sheriff in Virginia. The announcement has drawn criticism from some in the entertainment industry, including actor John Leguizamo, who took to Instagram to blast Cain's decision. "What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are has/been," Leguizamo said in the clip. Cain said he was saddened to hear Leguizamo's comments, but that he remained committed to taking the oath. "I like John Leguizamo so that's a little bit disappointing," said Cain of the Colombian-born actor's insults. However, he argued that many Hispanics do support ICE's mission of securing the borders and helping the legal immigration system. "The most vehement defenders of our ICE agents and our immigration enforcement are people who are legal immigrants. Legal immigrants really, really pay attention and legal immigrants don't like people jumping in front of the line." Cain's decision to join comes as the Department of Homeland Security removes the age cap for ICE positions to recruit 10,000 agents. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has said they've received tens of thousands of applications already. Cain says a recent surge in anti-ICE rhetoric and violence spurred his decision after the age cap was removed. DHS has announced that ICE officials faced an 830% increase in assaults between January and July of this year, compared to the same period in 2024. "Why are we attacking our ICE agents?" he questioned. "This is insane. Why are we trying to vilify them? Why are congressmen and women trying to vilify our law enforcement, federal law enforcement agents who are just trying to save Americans?" The actor added that despite Hollywood's pushback to his choice, the criticism won't deter him. "Everybody attacking you, attacking you, attacking you so you won't do it," he said. "And it's a way to keep you from doing it, keep [you] from standing up."

Tom Cruise reportedly turned down Donald Trump's 2025 Kennedy Center Honors invite due to a 'scheduling conflict'

Trump revealed the star-studded lineup of honorees being recognized for their cultural influence on Wednesday. Tom Cruise isn't on the list of this year's Kennedy Center honorees, but he was reportedly invited to be one. According to The Washington Post, several current and former Kennedy Center employees reported that Cruise, 63, was invited to be among the first group of Kennedy Center honorees during President Donald Trump's second term, but the Mission Impossible star declined due to "scheduling conflicts." A spokesman for Cruise declined to comment to the Post. Entertainment Weekly also reached out to Cruise's rep for further comment. On Wednesday, Trump revealed the star-studded lineup of honorees being recognized for their artistic and cultural influence, which includes rock band Kiss, singer Gloria Gaynor, country music titanGeorge Strait, English actor and comedian Michael Crawford, and Rocky star Sylvester Stallone. Along with the nominee reveal, Trump announced that he'll host the awards program this year — which he said he hadn't wanted to do but had been invited to do so and agreed. He added that he plans to "fully renovate" the entire infrastructure of the Kennedy Center to make it a "crown jewel" of arts and culture in the United States. "We're going to bring it to a higher level than it ever hit," Trump added, claiming the venue would be featured in next year's celebrations of America's 250th anniversary. This year's affair comes at a time of much upheaval at the Kennedy Center. In February, the Trump administration removed 18 members from the Kennedy Center's board of trustees — all of whom had been previously appointed by President Joe Biden — as well as the center's longstanding president, Deborah F. Rutter. Trump appointees, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Vice President JD Vance's wife, Usha Vance, now make up the board. Trump then installed himself as chairman, introduced a resolution to give himself more oversight into program selection, and appointed a loyalist, Richard Grenell, to the role of director. The moves led to a mass resignation of appointees and advisors, including Shonda Rhimes and Renée Fleming. Despite the tumultuous events leading up to Wednesday's announcement, this year's honorees are still "deeply honored" by the distinction. The members of Kiss shared their gratitude for the honor while speaking with TMZ on Thursday. "From our earliest days, Kiss has embodied the American ideal that all things are possible and that hard work pays off," Paul Stanley told the outlet. "The prestige of the Kennedy Center Honors cannot be overstated and I accept this on behalf of the long legacy of Kiss and all of the band members who helped create our iconic band." The other members of the legendary band — Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss — shared similar sentiments with the outlet. Simmons said, "Kiss is the embodiment of the American dream. We are deeply honored to receive the Kennedy Center Honor." TMZ noted that Frehley referred to himself as a "Trump supporter in 2020." The other members of Kiss, however, have been more critical of Trump. In Aug. 2020, Stanley called Trump's claims about the 2020 election being rigged if he lost "abhorrent." He also slammed Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol Riots in 2021. Calling those who partook in the riots "terrorists" who participated in "armed insurrection," Stanley added on X, "The flames were fanned today & over time by the president & specific senators who CANNOT be allowed now to distance from or denounce what they have directly caused. Know their names. THIS is the result of their deception. Shame." In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons said Trump was "good for the political system" but he nonetheless "has said some very vile, unkind things." Simmons, who was a contestant on Trump's NBC show The Celebrity Apprentice in 2008, admitted on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast in November 2022 that he initially was "happy" that the man he knew was elected in 2016, but he quickly changed his tune. "Look what that gentleman did to this country and the polarization — got all the cockroaches to rise to the top," Simmons said. "Once upon a time, you were embarrassed to be publicly racist and out there with conspiracy theories. Now it's all out in the open because he allowed it." He continued, "I don't think he's a Republican or a Democrat. He's out for himself, any way you can get there. And in the last election, over 70 million people bought it hook, line and sinker."Awarded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, the Kennedy Center Honors recognize the lifetime achievements of artists who have made profound contributions to the cultural life in America. Past honorees include Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Billy Crystal, Quincy Jones, Rita Moreno, Herbie Hancock, Dick Van Dyke, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Renée Fleming, and Francis Ford Coppola. The Kennedy Center Honor ceremony will take place on Dec. 7 and will later air on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
