Shao Chun Chen
once clocked over 40 hours a week in his corporate job in Singapore. Today, his lifestyle looks drastically different—he works just three hours a week, enough to support both himself and his wife in Thailand.
The 39-year-old, who spent most of his life in Singapore, relocated to Chiang Mai with his wife in November 2024. Now, he "supercommutes" more than 1,200 miles once a week to Singapore, where he works as an
adjunct lecturer
at the National University of Singapore, according to CNBC Make IT.
He teaches a three-hour digital marketing course that earns him between 2,000 and 4,000 Singapore dollars (approximately $1,540 to $3,070 USD) each month. That income comfortably covers his weekly travel and the couple's living costs in Thailand.

How layoff changed Chen's life
A layoff in early 2024 became a turning point for Shao Chun Chen, leading him to realize he had already achieved financial independence—and the freedom to reshape his life.
During nearly a decade at Google, Chen lived frugally and regularly invested up to half of his income. So when the tech giant unexpectedly let him go in February 2024, he discovered that the seven-figure investment portfolio he had quietly built gave him the option to step away from full-time work.
Live Events
At the time of his layoff, Chen's portfolio was valued at around $2 million, according to documents reviewed by
CNBC Make It
. By applying the 4% rule, he calculated that he could withdraw roughly $80,000 annually—adjusted for inflation—without running out of money, freeing him from the need for a regular paycheck.
'I've been working for the last 14 years of my life, and because of the layoff, I was forced to take a break,' Chen told CNBC Make It. 'It was very devastating, it was a huge blow to my ego, my identity, but it turns out, with time ... it sort of mandated me to think [about] what I really wanted in life.'
Chen turns to YouTube:
In addition to his three-hour-a-week role as an adjunct lecturer in Singapore, Shao Chun Chen also earns income through his YouTube channel, where he shares educational content, and his coaching business, where he charges up to $500 an hour depending on the client.
Chen has also embraced
geographical arbitrage
. By maintaining his primary income source in Singapore—where the currency is stronger—while living in Thailand, where the cost of living is significantly lower, he's able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with minimal work.
In Singapore, he says, he was paying about about $2,450 a month for his two-bedroom condominium.
Now, he lives in a brand new one-bedroom condo which costs him $450 a month — and it's much more luxurious. 'I'm already overpaying because I'm [paying] on a monthly basis ... If you sign a yearly lease, then it will be closer to $300,' Chen says.

CoinDCX hit by USD 44.2 mn security breach; founders say customer funds unaffected, safe

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has suffered a security breach, resulting in theft of USD 44.2 million, or ₹ 378 crore, even as the founders took to X to reassure that customer funds remained unaffected and safe, with the compromise limited to an internal operational account. The total exposure is being absorbed entirely by CoinDCX, using the company's treasury reserves, the company said in a First Incident Report released on Sunday. According to the report, on July 19, at 4 AM IST, CoinDCX security systems detected an incident involving unauthorised access to one of its accounts on the partner exchange, leading to a financial exposure of about USD 44 million. The incident once again puts the spotlight on mounting security threats in the highly volatile world of cryptocurrencies. Last year, crypto exchange WazirX faced a hack in India, leading to the loss of more than USD 230 million, and marking one of the biggest such heists in India. The theft had prompted a thorough examination of safety measures and eroded sentiments. CoinDCX co-founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal took to the social media platform X to address the situation, confirming that the attack was the result of a sophisticated server breach, targeting an internal wallet, not the ones holding customer assets. The incident was first flagged by blockchain investigator ZachXBT, following which the exchange made the disclosure public. "Today, one of our internal operational accounts -- used only for liquidity provisioning on a partner exchange -- was compromised due to a sophisticated server breach. I confirm that the CoinDCX wallets used to store customer assets are not impacted and are completely safe. This won't cause any loss to our customers. CoinDCX will be bearing the full amount," Gupta said. "The total amount lost was USD 44Mn out of our treasury assets. Coindcx Treasury will be bearing these losses," Khandelwal wrote. Following this, users rushed to check their balances, leading to a spike in withdrawal requests. The sudden surge in activity led to CoinDCX's portfolio APIs, which display user balances and transaction histories, becoming jammed and unresponsive. For several hours, many were unable to even see their holdings on the app, adding fuel to rumours and anxiety online. The co-founders later updated that Portfolio APIs have been restored. Affected infrastructure has been completely isolated, and CoinDCX operations continue to run normally, the company said. CERT-In, or the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has been informed about the incident. Detailed forensics with two globally reputed security agencies is being carried out, and reports will be shared for public benefit, it added. "CoinDCX services remain fully operational. Trading activity, INR deposits and INR withdrawals continue. INR withdrawals below ₹ 5 lakhs will reflect in your account within 5 hours, while withdrawals above ₹ 5 lakhs will be processed within 72 hours. The incident was isolated and has no impact on your portfolio access or operations," the company stated. Social media is flooded with mixed reactions. While some praised CoinDCX for absorbing the losses and protecting user funds, others criticised the delay in public disclosure and raised concerns over the broader security of crypto platforms in India. "Coindcx silent for 17 hours? That's more suspense than a thriller! In crypto, transparency isn't optional; it's key. Stay open to keep trust alive!" a user wrote. "Good to see CoinDCX acting responsibly, assuring user funds are safe, and not passing losses onto customers. Sets a positive precedent for Indian crypto exchanges," another said.

Salaried job vs business mindset: How British rule manipulated India's entrepreneurial potential, explains Saurabh Mukherjea

India's deep-rooted shift from a nation of business owners to one dominated by salaried employees did not happen by chance. According to founder and chief investment officer of Marcellus Investment Managers Saurabh Mukherjea, this transformation was a result of deliberate colonial manipulation that systematically dismantled the country's entrepreneurial ecosystem. Drawing on historical research and economic insights, Mukherjea explains how British rule disrupted India's flourishing business culture and replaced it with a mindset centered around job security and government service. In a video clip shared on his LinkedIn, Mukherjea, citing the book India Before the Ambanis by historian Lakshmi Subramanian, highlighted that during the Mughal era—spanning the 16th to 18th centuries— Indian entrepreneurship was thriving. The subcontinent enjoyed flourishing commerce that extended beyond domestic markets to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These business leaders were not just traders but multi-sectoral giants who worked in areas like shipping, textiles, and money lending. Their success symbolized a deeply rooted entrepreneurial ecosystem that thrived under the Mughal administration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria Principal Is Almost 75, See Her Now Reportingly Undo British Colonial Strategy: Undermining Indian Business However, this momentum was disrupted as British colonial influence grew stronger in the 19th century. According to Mukherjea, the British began systematically displacing Indian entrepreneurs through discriminatory regulations and social engineering. He referred again to Subramanian's book, which documents instances where Indian business communities such as the Parsis in Bombay and families like the Tagores in Bengal were deliberately sidelined. Mukherjea explained that the British also ran a long-standing campaign to shape public opinion against Indian businessmen. Over time, they associated Indian entrepreneurial groups—particularly Gujaratis, Marwaris, Sindhis, and Parsis—with negative stereotypes. By painting them as cunning or untrustworthy, the British were able to diminish their social stature and curtail their influence in commerce. Post-Independence Continuity of Colonial Bias While India's independence in 1947 marked the end of British rule, Mukherjea argued that the colonial mindset persisted through the newly empowered bureaucracy. The civil service, inherited from the British Indian administration, continued to hold a skeptical view of private enterprise. This bureaucratic suspicion delayed India's return to its business roots and suppressed entrepreneurial initiatives for decades. Mukherjea stated that it wasn't until the 1991 economic reforms led by then-Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao that the tide began to turn. Liberalization policies encouraged private enterprise and slowly helped India shed the lingering effects of colonial economic suppression. Reflecting on the present, Mukherjea noted a sharp resurgence in Indian entrepreneurship. The number of companies being registered in India has tripled over the past decade, signaling a renewed embrace of business creation. However, he emphasized that this revival is not just about policy change but also about challenging the deep-rooted narrative that once pushed generations into salaried jobs instead of entrepreneurship.

MCD to roll out first of three biogas plants, boosting urban waste management

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) first compressed biogas plant to process dairy waste is set to become fully operational next month in the Nangli area of south-west Delhi. Officials have indicated that chief minister Rekha Gupta is expected to inaugurate the facility on Aug 15. This plant is the first of three proposed biogas facilities aimed at processing dairy waste, with additional installations planned at Goyla Dairy and Ghogha Dairy. Together, the three plants will process 600 metric tonnes (MT) of cattle waste daily. "These projects are designed to address the challenge of unauthorised dairy operations and promote the scientific disposal of cattle dung, which currently ends up in drains or landfill sites," an MCD official said. Each plant, built at an estimated cost of Rs 16 crore, will process up to 200 MT of cattle dung per day. The biogas generated will be converted into CNG, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, while the byproduct — organic manure — will be used in MCD's horticulture operations. The new plants will significantly reduce this source of pollution," she said. Meanwhile, MCD is also working to set up three decentralised biomethanation plants to treat 750 MT of organic waste daily. One such facility, located in Ghogha, northwest Delhi, is also scheduled to become operational next month. The plant will process 100 MT of waste per day and is being established by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the civic body. "About 95% of the work is complete, and we expect to inaugurate the plant in Aug\," MCD report stated. The second major facility — a bio-CNG plant at Okhla with a capacity to process 300 MT of waste per day — is being developed over seven acres. Although initially slated for completion in July 2024, the project is only 45% complete due to delays. The concessionaire has requested additional land to expand the capacity to 500 TPD. The ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) is currently working with IIT Delhi to assess the land requirements. The revised completion target is Dec 2025. The third plant — a compressed biogas facility at Ghazipur — will process 350 MT of wet waste daily. Also being developed by IGL, the MoU for this project was signed on Nov 26, 2024. The land use change was formally notified by MoHUA on June 30, 2025, and construction is expected to begin by Oct 15. The project is targeted for commissioning by Dec 2026.
