Once one of the most feared players on the professional circuit, MVG is now seen by many as a beatable opponent when you're on your day.
That reputation took it's first big hit of the year when the 36-year-old fell to defeat at the hands of teenager
LUKE AWAY
Van Gerwen is a three-time world champion and one of the best players to ever take to the stage.
January's World Championship final matchup with a 17-year-old Luke Littler was an opportunity for the Dutchman to assert his dominance over a rising star that had drawn comparisons to a young MVG.

But the chance at lifting a fourth Sid Waddell trophy was gone within a matter of minutes as Littler stormed to a 4-0 lead, ultimately going on to win 7-3.
It wasn't just £500,000 and the trophy that was snatched away from Van Gerwen,
Littler's success as a 17-year-old made him the youngest ever winner of the worlds, trumping MVG's record of lifting the title as a 24-year-old in 2014.

There's a caveat to losing to Littler, because despite being a teenager, he's still one of the sport's top prospects and best players.

Lerone Murphy to ‘let it all go' against Aaron Pico at UFC 319 to convince Dana White & Co. to give him title shot

The Brit has had just three weeks to prepare for the biggest fight of his career 'TITLE WORTHY' Lerone Murphy to 'let it all go' against Aaron Pico at UFC 319 to convince Dana White & Co. to give him title shot LERONE MURPHY admits he'll have to be the "BEST" he's ever been against Aaron Pico to convince Dana White and Co. that he deserves a shot at the featherweight title. And he knows he needs to make a statement against the former super-prospect to make himself the undeniable next contender for Alexander Volkanovski's 145lbs strap. Brit Lerone Murphy eyes UFC title shot with win over Josh Emmett Even if he doesn't get his hand raised after a viral stoppage, Murphy believes matchmakers should reward his near-perfect octagon run with the chance to become the UK's fourth-ever UFC champion. "If you don't win the fight [by finish], it shouldn't mean you don't get a title shot," he said. "There have been plenty of guys who have done that. "The Max Holloways [of the world], they didn't always finish fights. "Volkanovski didn't always finish fights. It's only once they became champions that they started to finish fights. Advertisement "I'm not a casual, I like to watch pure MMA. So if somebody is good, is going to look good and is entertaining to watch, then why can't they be champion?" Murphy may believe he's in the ideal spot to stake a claim for a title shot, but the risk-to-reward ratio for his short-notice Chi-Town clash with Pico is incredibly high. A maiden defeat will see the Manchester Top Team standout go back to the drawing board and start his pursuit of UFC gold all over again. A sensational stoppage or a one-sided display, meanwhile, will prompt the often vocal minority of fans to claim he "fraud checked" long-hyped prospect Pico. But Murphy could care little about the outside noise, unless it's fans clamouring for him to get a crack at 145lbs gold. Advertisement He said: "The casuals are always going to find something to say, regardless of anything. "I could go out there and KO Volkanovski in ten seconds, and they're going to say, 'He's past his prime.' I have to let it all go, be myself and show everybody that I'm a title worthy." "I never look at that, I just follow in my journey and do my thing." California clubber Pico was once one of the hottest prospects in MMA before vicious back-to-back knockout losses to Henry Corrales and Adam Borics derailed his hype train. The 28-year-old former Junior Golden Gloves champion has done a brilliant job rebuilding himself, losing just one of his last ten fights. "I think I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico there has been," Murphy said of his latest challenge. "Obviously, in the early days, that was him transitioning into MMA from wrestling and boxing. "Right now, he's got the experience, and I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico." He added: "It's going to be a full MMA match. I've got to be dangerous everywhere and be aware everywhere. Obviously, he can wrestle and he can box. "I'm going to be looking for submissions, I'm going to be looking to time him on the way in. Arteta hits back at Adams and insists Odegaard deserves to be Arsenal captain 'by a mile'

Mikel Arteta insists there is "no question" Martin Odegaard still deserves to captain Arsenal after former skipper Tony Adams called for the Norwegian to be stripped of the armband. Adams demanded the Gunners boss make the change ahead of the new campaign, arguing "proper player" Declan Rice was the man for the job. Arteta vehemently disagreed with that assessment, confirming Odegaard has the backing of everyone at the club. "My opinion is clear," said Arteta, "and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players. "I asked them to vote (for) the captain and I got the results yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big, by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that." Adams, speaking at an Irish Independent Sport event in Dublin, said: "Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. "You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. "Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain. I think he is better than Arteta. I think he's a winner. As a man, he is a proper player." Arteta said he could talk about leadership "for hours", but asked to summarise Odegaard's qualifications, replied: "What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening." Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Manchester United, then host newly promoted Leeds before a difficult stretch that will see them play Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle. That run, agreed Arteta, could be the ideal litmus test for their capacity for winning the title this season. He said: "Yes, especially (with) the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are. We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together." Arteta confirmed summer signings Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi will be fit to play on Sunday, and is optimistic Leandro Trossard will also be available. And while Arteta joked "too many" Premier League teams have a legitimate shot at lifting the trophy, some he even suspects will "surprise everybody", he remains more determined than ever to claim the silverware that has so far eluded him. He added: "You keep digging, digging, digging, and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. "You have the consistency, but now we have to do it in a season, to end with more points than any other team. That's the objective."

Debunked: No, the Premier League has not banned players from wearing rainbow-coloured bootlaces

FALSE CLAIMS THAT the Premier League is banning rainbow laces and captain's armbands have spread widely online. The Premier League has recently ended a partnership with an LGBTQ+ charity that saw players encouraged to wear rainbow laces on their boots. However, the Premier League says it remains committed to improving LGBTQ+ inclusivity and that players can still wear rainbow laces if they wish. 'BREAKING', begins a 7 August post on Facebook shared more than 1,400 times. 'The Premier League have announced they are BANNING rainbow laces and rainbow captains armbands for the upcoming season, stating that the initiative was causing more issues than it was delivering a positive message….' Many of the messages under this post seem to interpret this as a reactionary milestone in a culture war. 'The tide is finally starting to turn in England,' reads one popular post. 'Standby for the woke meltdown in 3..2..1..' reads another. Others were not so celebratory: 'Imagine being upset by a rainbow?' wrote one user. In any case, the claim made in the post, about a ban on rainbow accessories, is not true. Advertisement Rather, it was announced earlier this month that the Premier League is cutting its ties with the charity Stonewall. The partnership had involved a famous campaign to get players to voluntarily wear rainbow laces to signal that gay people are welcome in football. A number of prominent organisations have cut ties with Stonewall in recent years, including government departments, universities, and the BBC, with some citing cost concerns, undue levels of influence, or saying they wanted to avoid the appearance of bias. However, the Premier League says that while their partnership has ended, they are now developing their own campaign to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion, expected to launch next February, and that rainbow accessories are not banned. 'It has always been a players' choice,' a Premier League spokesperson told The Journal about rainbow laces, though noted that equipment regulations generally fall under rules of the International Football Association Board rather than the Premier League. It is understood that captains have agreed to wear standard Premier League armbands going forward. However, this is not due to an official ban by the Premier League, and captains have previously worn different armbands for a season. There are currently no openly gay or bisexual players in the Premier League, according to the BBC. Want to be your own fact-checker?
