MoU to revamp ‘Doi Ghat' as part of Hooghly riverfront development

The Print13 hours ago
The name Doi Ghat is derived from 'Doi' or curd in Bengali, reflecting its past as a hub where dairy products and other goods arrived in earthen pots from Howrah.
The Doi Ghat holds historical significance as a key landing point for the dairy trade between Howrah and Kolkata.
Kolkata, Jul 18 (PTI) The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK) Kolkata has partnered with TNS Logi-Park Private Ltd to redevelop and beautify the historic 'Doi Ghat' on the banks of the Hooghly River, furthering its efforts to rejuvenate the city's riverfront.
Howrah was once known for its flourishing dairy sector.
Strategically located at the confluence of the Adi Ganga and the Hooghly's main channel, the ghat played an important role in riverine trade and daily exchanges between rural Bengal and the then growing city of Calcutta.
The ghat will undergo redevelopment to enhance its heritage character while modernising its infrastructure.
The project will also improve access and public utilities at the site.
SMPK has been actively working to restore several historic ghats as part of its broader Hooghly riverfront beautification drive.
Similar partnerships have already been undertaken for the renovation of Kumartuli and Nimtala ghats.
Once completed, the revamped Doi Ghat is expected to contribute to tourism, community engagement, and the preservation of Kolkata's riverine heritage. PTI BSM SBN SBN

Yes Bank Q1 net profit jumps 59 pc on non-core income growth

Agency: PTI Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) Private sector lender Yes Bank on Saturday reported a 59 per cent jump in its June quarter net profit to Rs 801 crore, helped by non-core income growth. Its core net interest income grew 5.7 per cent to Rs 2,371 crore on the back of a 5 per cent growth in advances and a 0.10 per cent widening in the net interest margin at 2.5 per cent. The other income jumped 46 per cent to Rs 1,752 crore, and was one of the major drivers of the profit growth. Treasury income was one of the key movers on this front; gains of investment were Rs 484 crore against Rs 32 crore losses in the year-ago period. The bank's managing director and chief executive Prashant Kumar said the bank is cautious on the retail credit growth, where it does not wish to grow products offering it thin margins. Kumar exuded confidence that the advances growth will accelerate in the rest of the year, and added that the bank is maintaining its loan growth target. The gross slippages inched up to Rs 1,458 crore from Rs 1,223 crore in the quarter-ago period, and Kumar said there were two business accounts in the April-June period which are set to turn performing soon. Kumar said he expects the 20 per cent stake buy by Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Corporation Bank (SMBC) to be complete by September-end, but did not confirm if an application has been given by them to acquire another 5 per cent. When asked about his own tenure at the bank and if he sees a role beyond the six-month extension granted by the RBI, Kumar declined to comment. view comments First Published: July 19, 2025, 20:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Operators of app-based cabs suspend strike for three days

Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) The Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch on Saturday suspended the ongoing strike of drivers of app-based taxis in Mumbai and other cities of Maharashtra for three days. Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of the association, told PTI that the strike, which started on Wednesday, was being suspended till next Tuesday to give time to the Maharashtra government to respond to their demands. 'We have only suspended the strike, not called it off. If our demands are not accepted by Tuesday, services will be shut again," he said. At a meeting with the association's representatives, transport department officials sought time till Tuesday, said Kshirsagar. In the meantime, app-based cabs will charge the rate fixed by the government for the conventional black-and-yellow taxis and not the rate appearing in the apps of cab aggregators (such as Ola or Uber), he said. He also urged commuters and drivers to use a fare calculation website based on official government rates, to avoid overcharging. The Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch has demanded rationalisation of fares, bringing fares on par with those of the black-and-yellow metered cabs, prohibition of bike taxis, a cap on permits of black-and-yellow cabs and auto rickshaws, formation of a welfare board for drivers of app-based cabs and enactment of the `Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act' on the lines of other states. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurates 435 MW solar plant in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jul 19 (PTI) Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Saturday inaugurated the 435 MW Gorbea Solar Power Project in Rajasthan, terming it a model of speed, sustainability, and inclusive development. Developed by Zelestra India, the project was completed in eight months and spans 1,250 acres. It will generate 755 GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power 1.28 lakh homes while cutting 7.05 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions. The plant operates under a 25-year PPA with Solar Energy Corporation of India, according to a statement. Speaking at the event, Joshi praised Rajasthan's leadership in India's energy transition, stating that nearly 70 per cent of the state's power capacity now comes from renewables, with over 35.4 GW installed capacity — 29.5 GW solar and 5.2 GW wind. He also highlighted that the land for the plant was leased from farmers, offering them steady income. Over 700 locals were employed during construction. Joshi credited Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for fast-tracking clean energy reforms and investments, including the state's Integrated Clean Energy and Green Hydrogen policies, and rooftop solar installations under central schemes.
