Will Operation Sindoor affect Pakistan Super League? PCB breaks silence, Bangladesh monitoring players' safety

Mint07-05-2025

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to continue with the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) amid the cross border tensions between India and Pakistan. After the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, that killed 26 innocent lives, the Indian Army retaliated with missile attacks on nine terrorists camps in Pakistan on the wee hours of Wednesday as a part of Operation Sindoor.
With the PSL currently going on in Pakistan, the cross border tensions certainly been the talking point considering the safety of the local and overseas players competing in the tournament.
According to a NDTV report, there has been no request from any of the overseas players to withdraw from PSL. 'At least three media managers of the six franchises in the league said it was a developing situation but so far no overseas player (s) from their teams had requested to leave the league. Each franchise in the league has 5-6 overseas players in their squads,' the report read.
Meanwhile, the PCB has issued a statement on Wednesday stating the PSL with go on as scheduled. 'The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed that HBL Pakistan Super League X will continue as planned with Islamabad United set to take on Quetta Gladiators later today at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium,' the PCB statement read.
"The toss will take place at 7.30pm, with the first ball to be bowled at 8pm. Tonight's match sees the return of HBL PSL to Rawalpindi for four matches on 7, 8, 9 and 10 May. Thereafter the final group stage match is scheduled in Multan on 11 May.
'The Qualifier is set to take place in Rawalpindi on 13 May, while both Eliminators (1 and 2) and Final of the marquee event are to take place on 14, 16 and 18 May, respectively at the Gaddafi Stadium,' it added.
On the other hand, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is closely monitoring the situation in Pakistan and the safety of their players in PSL. Bangladesh has two players Rishad Hossain (Lahore Qalandars) and Nahid Rana (Peshawar Zalmi) participating in PSL 2025.
"The BCB is in active coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to guarantee the security of our players," the BCB said in a release.

Aaqib Javed's bold plan to transform Pakistan's cricket academies

Aaqib Javed (Image credit: PCB) NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan pacer and head coach Aaqib Javed has vowed to transform the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore into one of the most productive academies in world cricket. Aaqib, who took over as director of the NCA two months ago following his stint as interim head coach of the national teams, said he aims to make Pakistan's academies a benchmark for other cricketing nations. "We shouldn't have to look at other academies for guidance but develop our own system which other countries would look towards for guidance," he said in a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) podcast. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Aaqib revealed that he has set a six-month timeline to implement a structured system at the NCA and its regional branches in Karachi, Multan, and Faisalabad. "These academies should be run on a system where we groom and produce quality players of all age groups for the national teams and also provide players with the best rehabilitation facilities," said the former cricketer, who also serves as a national selector. He noted that while the NCA in Lahore is well-equipped, it has lacked a truly effective and productive system for years. "We are also trying to restore the biomechanics equipment and lab back at the NCA after it was outsourced by the board and dedicate the academy in Karachi only for women's cricket," he added. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket's TV market and the watershed moments Aaqib, who has previously coached the UAE national team and served as Pakistan's bowling coach, emphasized that his long-standing goal has been to identify and nurture talent and to establish a system that ensures academies function efficiently, regardless of changes in PCB leadership. The NCA was established in 2002–03 during the tenure of former PCB chairman Lt. General Tauqir Zia and was later renamed in honor of the late Bob Woolmer , who served as Pakistan's head coach for four years.

Pakistan Set To Appoint New All-Format Captain. It's Not Babar Azam Or Mohammad Rizwan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to make some sweeping changes in its national team set-up with Salman Ali Agha in line to become all-format captain, replacing Shan Masood as the skipper of the Test side. Besides the change in captaincy, the board will also be announcing the formation of an "observatory" committee after Eid holidays, a concept meant to keep a close watch on cricket developments including in the national team and forward recommendations to the board's chairman. A source in the board said that former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and ex-pacer Sikander Bakht had been called to Lahore for a meeting. "The two were informed about the decision to form the observatory committee and offered positions on it," the source said. "Some other players will also be on this committee." He said PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, after discussions with his close aides including new white ball head coach Mike Hesson, is also considering redefining the role of the national selection committee. "Either there will be changes in the current selection committee which would continue to work with the Pakistan team management or a new selection set-up would be announced with prime focus on looking and finding talent from domestic and age group cricket," the source said. Naqvi, the source added, wanted to see things move forward with the right people in the right positions and with the coach and captain given powers to select the teams. There is also a move to give more responsibility to Salman Ali Agha who is currently the national T20 captain and the board is contemplating replacing Shan Masood as the Test skipper when they announce the new head coach of the red ball format. Pakistan's next Test assignment, which is their first in the ICC World Test Championship new cycle, will be a two-match home series against South Africa later this year. Pakistan is slated to play just five Tests this calendar year.
