Elden Ring Nightreign outsells Switch 2 launch game, Mario Kart World, in June

Express Tribune24-07-2025
Elden Ring: Nightreign was the best-selling game in the United States in June 2025, outselling Nintendo's major Switch 2 launch title, Mario Kart World, according to Circana data.
Nightreign, a $40 standalone multiplayer spinoff of FromSoftware's open-world RPG, launched at the end of May. The game achieved two million units sold on its first day and over 3.5 million within five days.
Reviews were strong, with Steam ratings moving to 'Very Positive' shortly after launch, and the game maintained its full-game pricing structure.
In comparison, Mario Kart World, which launched alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, came in third for June's best-selling games in the US. The Switch 2 debuted at $450, or $499 with a Mario Kart World bundle, with both receiving strong promotion and launch demand.
Chris Cocks, Hasbro CEO, noted that pricing and accessibility may have contributed to Nightreign's lead, as the game is multiplatform and sold for less than half the price of a new console bundle.
This price difference may have influenced purchasing decisions for players balancing hardware and software costs.
Other titles performing strongly in June included Death Stranding 2 in second place, while Stellar Blade climbed to fifth, and Cyberpunk 2077 re-entered the top 20 at eighteenth due to discounts and next-gen updates.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond confirmed playable at Fan Expo Canada, launch expected in late 2025

Nintendo has confirmed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be playable later this month at Fan Expo Canada, further supporting plans for a 2025 release. This marks the first opportunity for the public to experience the title hands-on since its announcement. Initially revealed in 2017 under the title Metroid Prime 4, the project was later rebooted in 2019. A new trailer released last summer confirmed its current title and 2025 launch window, but a precise release date remains unannounced. In an official announcement, Nintendo stated that attendees will be able to play 'upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (available later in 2025),' alongside other titles including Donkey Kong Bananza, Hades 2, and Borderlands 4. The confirmation follows the game receiving a rating in South Korea in July, suggesting development has progressed to a late stage. The renewed visibility of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond comes after years of uncertainty and delays, with fans expressing cautious optimism following the announcement of its inclusion in Nintendo's Fan Expo Canada showcase. Though no final release date has been confirmed, the game is expected to be released on both the current Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. The long-anticipated sequel's appearance at the Expo signals another step toward its full release, reinforcing Nintendo's 2025 target and offering fans their first direct experience with Samus Aran's return.

Nintendo increases original Switch prices in US for first time since 2017 launch

Nintendo has officially raised the retail prices of its original Nintendo Switch consoles and accessories in the United States, marking the first price adjustment since the system's debut in 2017. The new pricing came into effect on August 3 2025. The standard Nintendo Switch now retails at $339.99, up from its previous price of $299.99. The OLED model has increased to $399.99, while the more compact Switch Lite is now priced at $229.99. Additionally, certain accessories, such as the Joy-Con 2 (L/R), have risen to $84.99, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo is now $44.99. Nintendo attributed the pricing change to shifting 'market conditions' in an official statement. However, the company did not cite recent tariff changes or economic policies as direct reasons for the move. The adjustments bring the cost of the older Switch hardware much closer to the new-generation Nintendo Switch 2, which is priced at $449.99. Despite the increases, some US retailers briefly listed consoles at older prices before aligning with Nintendo's updated structure. Retailers like Target reportedly updated their listings early but later reverted the changes. It remains unclear whether this was due to timing issues or internal policy decisions. While the Switch 2 and its game prices remain unaffected, Nintendo stated that future pricing evaluations may occur depending on economic factors.

Excitement for Persona 3 Reload on Switch 2 dampened by Game‑Key card format and DLC exclusion

Nintendo has confirmed that Persona 3 Reload will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, arriving roughly 20 months after its initial release on other platforms. Despite the excitement, fans have reacted negatively to two key decisions. Atlus confirmed that physical versions for Switch 2 will be distributed on Game‑Key cards rather than full-size cartridges. A Twitter user responded, 'Thanks for saving my money Atlus!' noting they would have repurchased the game immediately if it had come on a full card with all DLC included. Equally disappointing to fans is the exclusion of the Persona 3 Reload: Expansion Pass—which includes the Episode Aigis DLC—from the $90 Digital Premium Edition. The premium edition includes the game, digital soundtrack, artbook, and character costumes, but omits the expansion pass. Despite retailers offering the pass separately at launch, many feel the package should have bundled the DLC. Commenters have expressed frustration over paying full price for separate DLC so long after the original release. One user commented, 'I like their games, but can't say I'm surprised with this, classic Atlus.' The removal of the DLC from the premium package has disappointed those expecting a more complete release at launch. Atlus has not yet responded directly to the criticism, but the reaction reflects broader concerns about physical media formats and value expectations for remakes. Despite the backlash, Persona 3 Reload remains a highly anticipated release for Switch 2 owners.
