Badminton coach charged over crash that killed toddler
Ong Kai Wei, 26, claimed trial after the charge was read before Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar.
He is accused of recklessly driving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that collided with a car carrying a family of three, resulting in the death of two-year-old Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddi.
The incident took place at Kilometre 144.9 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) at 7.35am on May 26.
Ong was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than five years, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludeen prosecuted, while Ong was represented by lawyer Siti Nurashikin Fuaddin.
The court allowed bail at RM5,000 and fixed Aug 20 for mention and document submission.
The court also ordered Ong's driving licence suspended pending the outcome of the case.
In the crash, Ayesha Sofea succumbed to her injuries after two days in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.
The impact had forced the family's car off the highway and into a guardrail after being struck by the MPV.

North Johor Baru district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the incident occurred at about 11.27am when a car driven by a 48-year-old local man was believed to have lost control before hitting the left rear of a lorry. "The car, believed to be travelling from Johor Baru to Skudai, was carrying a 27-year-old Singaporean male passenger. "As a result of the collision, the car driver suffered serious head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene, while his passenger died while receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Bahru," he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, he said the lorry driver, a 28-year-old local man, did not suffer any injuries. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Pakistani national arrested for DUI after Johor restaurant crash
JOHOR BAHRU: A 45-year-old Pakistani national was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing his car into a restaurant on Jalan Riang Utama. The incident occurred yesterday evening, causing damage to parked motorcycles and another vehicle before the suspect fled.
