Vancouver Whitecaps head to Houston looking to regain their winning form

CTV News5 days ago
The Vancouver Whitecaps are looking to put their Major League Soccer season back on the rails.
After enjoying one of the best starts in team history the Whitecaps have lost two MLS matches in a row and four of their last five.
The Whitecaps (11-5-5) hope to get back on track Wednesday when they face the Houston Dynamo (7-10-5) in Texas.
The 'Caps will then play their fourth game in 11 days when they battle San Diego FC Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium.
The game in San Diego will be Vancouver's third consecutive road game after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.
'We know that we haven't really been as strong as when we started the season,' forward Daniel Rios said after training this week. 'It's part of every team. We don't panic.
'The way we approach these two (games) is try to get the most possible points. We'll do our best.'
Back on May 24 the Whitecaps used a 3-2 road victory over Real Salt Lake to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games across all competitions and nine matches in MLS play. At the time, Vancouver led the league with a 9-1-4 record for 31 points.
Vancouver is 3-4-3 in the 10 MLS games since. The Whitecaps sit third in the Western Conference with 38 points, four back of conference leading San Diego, and have slid to eighth overall in the league standings.
In their last four losses the Whitecaps have been outscored 13-4 and have given up three or more goals three times, including a 5-3 defeat by San Diego at BC Place Stadium on June 25.
'Colorado wasn't our best,' defender Tate Johnson said. 'We've got time to fix it.
'We know things have got to be better. We're looking forward to putting together two good games next week.'
On a positive note, Vancouver used a goal in the 90th minute July 9 to beat Canadian Premier League side Valour FC 2-1 to win their Telus Canadian Champions quarterfinal.
The Dynamo are 2-4 in their last six games and sit 10th in the Western Conference with 26 points.
'We know they're a great team,' said Johnson. 'We know they have a lot of threats, they're very well organized.
'We're going to have to make sure we're able to step up and put together a good performance.'
Head coach Jesper Sorensen said his team doesn't need an overhaul, just some tinkering.
'We have to perform at a better level than we've done,' said Sorensen. 'It not just regarding structure and discipline. We have to be tougher and get into the game and start them better.'
A question facing the Whitecaps is the status of Ecuadorean midfielder Pedro Vite.
The team and Vite had agreed on a contract extension through the 2029 season. But Axel Schuster, Vancouver's chief executive officer and sporting director, said the deal included an agreement the team would take into consideration any offers for Vite from other clubs.
It has been reported Mexican side Pumas UNAM have approached the Whitecaps about Vite, who is second on the team with four goals and leads with six assists.
'We have received an offer that we are at least considering,' said Schuster. 'We're focusing on the job that is ahead of us. We have a few days where we will go over this.
'It's a little bit unfortunate but it's also what the business is.'
Pumas was one of the teams the Whitecaps beat on their journey to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final, which they lost to Cruz Azul 5-0.

Sam Surridge ties Messi for MLS goals lead as Nashville blanks Toronto

(Photo credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images) Sam Surridge scored his MLS lead-tying 18th goal to push Nashville SC near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 1-0 victory over visiting Toronto FC on Saturday night. Surridge's first-half tally pulled him even with Lionel Messi, who scored his 17th and 18th goals earlier Saturday in Miami's 5-1 home win over the New York Red Bulls. The win ensured Nashville (14-5-5, 47 points) will finish the weekend no worse than second in the East, and first if Cincinnati fails to win its match at Real Salt Lake later Saturday. Nashville won their second straight and sixth out of seven, and have lost just once in their last 18 in all competitions dating back to April 26. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson made four saves to keep Toronto (5-12-6, 21 points) in the match, while Joe Willis kept his ninth clean sheet while not having to make a single stop. The Reds were shut out for the first time in six games, scoring in the last three despite the departure of Italian attacking stars Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne at the beginning of July. Two of Johnson's best stops came against 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar. The first of those came in the 28th minute when the German attacker unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty box that appeared bound for the bottom right corner. Unfortunately for Johnson, the rebound of his fine sprawling stop rolled only as far as the feet of Surridge, who finished before the keeper could regain his footing to attempt a second save. Toronto thought they had a precious chance to level the score when referee Sergii Boiko ruled Walker Zimmerman had hauled down Deandre Kerr in the penalty area in the 60th minute. Boiko was summoned to the replay monitor, and after a review, it was ruled the foul had occurred fractionally outside the box, resulting in a direct free kick. Johnson had another exceptional one-on-one save on Mukhtar in the 79th minute. On the other end, Toronto got into a few promising positions late but failed to make Willis stop any of their seven total shots.

San Diego rookie Ian Pilcher's late goal earns draw with Whitecaps

(Photo credit: Chadd Cady-Imagn Images) Rookie Ian Pilcher scored his first career goal late in the second half as San Diego FC recorded a 1-1 tie with the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night to remain in first place in the Western Conference. Vancouver's tally came on an own goal off the foot of San Diego FC's Manu Duah. The Whitecaps had a chance to win it in the ninth and final minute of second-half stoppage time, but San Diego FC goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega made a leg save on Daniel Rios' close-range right-footed shot. San Diego FC (13-7-4, 43 points) holds a one-point lead over the Whitecaps (12-5-6, 42 points) and two over Minnesota United (11-5-8, 41 points). Sisniega made three saves, while Vancouver counterpart Yohei Takaoka had five stops. San Diego FC had a 17-9 advantage in shots and placed six on target to Vancouver's three. San Diego was shut out at home by Toronto FC on Wednesday and was facing the possibility of being blanked again as the match reached the 79th minute. Then Luca Bombino mis-hit a shot and the ball went right to Pilcher, who unleashed a left-footed blast that Takaoka had no chance to stop. It landed in the top left corner to knot the score. Earlier, Vancouver's Edier Ocampo took a blistering right-footed shot in the 37th minute that was stopped by Sisniega. The Whitecaps kept the pressure on and Ocampo took a right-footed shot that was knocked away by Sisniega. The ball then deflected off the foot of Duah into the net for an own goal in the 40th minute. The Whitecaps had a big opportunity in the 76th minute when star Brian White got the ball unmarked and worked his way to the left and around Sisniega. He sent a left-footed roller toward the open net and it went through the goal mouth and just wide of the far post. Just three minutes later, Pilcher scored the tying goal and San Diego seized the momentum. In the 88th minute, Jeppe Tverskov's glancing header was pushed over the net by Takaoka.
