MasterChef bosses decide BBC show fate for coming years after show scandal
MasterChef is safe on the BBC until at least 2028, TV experts have insisted, despite it currently having a recipe for disaster.
The hit cooking show has had several weeks of controversy with first Gregg Wallace and then co-host John Torode both being axed from the series following an independent report into their behaviour.
Production company Banijay and the BBC have two series of the show completed and there have been many questions about if they will air.
Industry website Deadline says the current contract with Banijay until 2028 will continue and bosses are keen to keep the show as it has a young audience they would struggle to capture with a newly launch show. A second source told the Mirror they are confident the MasterChef brand is here to stay "for the long term" on the BBC.
Insiders also insist they will do everything they can to screen the competitions which have already taken place, one series with both Wallace and Torode and a celeb version with Torode and Grace Dent.
'Having a civilian MasterChef in the can is the absolute worst position for them to be in,' a senior producer source who used to work on the show told Deadline.
Behind closed doors, the BBC is said to be balancing a number of factors: the welfare of those who made allegations, the expectations of chefs who competed in Season 21, and audience appetite for the cooking contest.
They could also face legal challenges from competitors if the show does not air. The report also hit back at claims Torode was 'blindsided' with his sacking, as discussions are said to have been going on for weeks.
The Times and other reports on Thursday night claimed Torode was fired after he used the 'N word'. Production company Banijay said on Tuesday that an investigation into his co-star Gregg Wallace's behaviour by firm Lewis Silkin had "substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against" John, 59. John however said in a statement: "I have no recollection of what I'm accused of.'
It's now been suggested that John, who had co-hosted the cooking show since 2005, used the N-word twice. John is said to vehemently deny ever using the racial slur. Earlier this week John came forward as the person alleged to have used racist language, after the allegation was upheld in a report into John's colleague Gregg Wallace's behaviour.
Deadline also discussed the possibility of new hosts for the show, with stand-in Grace Dent obviously in pole position for one slot. The show is filmed in Birmingham which would make drummer Alison Hammond a good fit. Food podcaster and comedian Ed Gamble has been a guest on the show or Matt Tebbutt from Saturday Kitchen were also described as the type of people who could star alongside Grace in possible new line ups.

In 2002, prominent film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a glowing five stars, calling out the film as 'a masterpiece of physical filmmaking.' Upon its release, the film was overshadowed by controversy surrounding its infamous sex scene. As Roeg cuts between images of John and Laura getting ready for dinner, the camera also shows the pair in bed together in a raw and intimate sex sequence. Its visual style led to persistent rumours that these were scenes of real, unsimulated sex between its actors… speculation that continues today. 'My gaze shifted to the actors, and I was riveted. By their shifting positions, it was clear to me they were no longer simply acting: they were f***ing on camera,' wrote Producer Peter Bart in his 2011 memoir, Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob (and Sex). However, the stars have always rejected such allegations, with Sutherland denying that Bart was even in the room at all. In the production notes for the film's 4K re-release, cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond echoed Sutherland's denial, saying: 'We did a good job; it's very real. People still say they actually made love, but they didn't.' Meanwhile, Christie's boyfriend at the time, actor Warren Beatty, reportedly tried to prevent the film from being released, so outraged was he by the infamous sex scene. In April 2015, it was announced that the film would be getting a remake, to the chagrin of Hunger Games star Sutherland. Speaking in a sweary interview with Metro, the actor described the prospect of a remake as 'shameful.' More Trending He explained: 'Don't embarrass yourselves by participating in it. It's bulls**t. It was a piece of work indelibly written by Nicholas Roeg. 'Why would they do it? It's just people trying to profit off the back of something that's very beautiful. It's shameful. BBC radio ‘champion' dies after two-decade career as devastated colleagues pay tribute
BBC legend Charlie Partridge has died, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues. The much-loved broadcaster, who ran BBC Radio Lincolnshire for more than 20 years, has passed away. 3 3 3 Tributes have flooded in for the radio veteran, and he has been praised by those who worked alongside him. Former BBC News Foreign Correspondent and colleague Jonathan Charles shared a heartfelt message on X. He said: "I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Charlie Partridge. "More than 45 years ago, he taught me a lot about broadcasting at BBC Nottingham. "He was a great guy and we stayed in touch, occasionally swapping messages in the years since. "Sometimes discussing Springsteen. "My thoughts are with his family." Another mourner responded: "Sad to hear Jonathan, John. Charlie was a lovely man, who believed in truly local radio. "He was also very kind and supportive. "Thoughts with his family. John Hess also shared a message for the late broadcaster. He said: "As others have posted online, I'm deeply saddened to have learnt yesterday of the death of Charlie Partridge."
