Bill Elwell, the owner of legendary San Fernando Valley burger stand Bill's Burgers, died on July 21 at 98 years old. Even late into his 90s, Elwell could be seen manning the flattop grill at his Van Nuys (eventually rezoned to Sherman Oaks) burger stand, flipping chargrilled patties as the line stretched away from its ordering window, down Oxnard Street.
Elwell was born in 1926 and raised in the west Ventura neighborhood of Tortilla Flats. Before opening Bill's Burgers, he was in the Army during World War II, worked as a late-night taxi driver, and was a manager at Mission Linen Company. In 1965, Elwell purchased the burger stand that would become Bill's Burgers, which sat on the plot right next door to his job at the time.
For the nearly six decades following, Elwell was constantly at the burger stand, serving well-seasoned patties topped with American cheese, iceberg lettuce, freshly sliced tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. The flatop grill, still in use at the stand, dates back to the 1920s or 1930s. Elwell sourced the meat locally from Northridge, and it was ground fresh every morning. Legend has it that he was even spotted eating the patties raw if customers complained about them not being cooked enough. A line on the top of the menu read, 'You can't have it your way, this is not Burger King,' adding to the stand's dry humor.
For some time, Elwell ran the stand as Bill & Hiroko's with his now ex-wife, Hiroko Wilcox, whom he met at a bowling alley decades ago. In a 2014 Los Angeles Times article, Elwell mentioned that another of his five ex-wives, Sharon Elwell, still came to the stand to help out a few times a week. At some point, Elwell renamed the stand back to Bill's Burgers, where it weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, and Elwell was still in the back flipping burgers. In July 2020, Elwell attempted to sell the business, but no sale ever materialized.
As burger trends came and went in Los Angeles, from the crispy-edged smash burgers to thick bistro burgers, Bill's remained the same — a testament to Elwell himself and his longtime customers who kept coming back. In recent years, Elwell's age and consistent ownership have become a story in their own right. Eater LA conducted the first-ever interview on the burger man in 2013 at the age of 86. Over a decade later, virtually nothing had changed in the cash-only business except for the prices, even in the face of rising inflation. In 2011, a basic cheeseburger cost $3.35; by 2018, it had increased to $4.20, and by May 2025, it had risen to just $7.
Though often gruff and other times grumpy, Elwell's straightforward persona as perhaps the oldest living burger cook in the country continued without greater coverage from national media.
'Whichever way I make the burger, that's the best way,' Elwell told Eater LA in 2013. 'But I like when people get double cheeseburgers with everything. That's what I'm famous for, I think.'
Elwell is survived by his son James Elwell (Valerie) and daughter Charlene Morris, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Closed primary schools in Hackney may be transformed into temporary accommodation or specialist sites to help children with special educational needs. Hackney Council shut four primary schools last year following a significant drop in pupil numbers in the borough, and is having to close a further four schools this summer. A year after the four sites closed, the council has put forward potential alternative uses for the schools, with the Mayor of Hackney insisting: 'We cannot let these buildings sit empty or simply offload them to the highest bidder.' Baden Powell Primary School in Hackney Downs could be adapted to become a special school and host extra school places for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The Baden Powell site will be an expansion of Ickburgh School and will serve autistic children with severe learning difficulties, to help meet the growing need within Hackney, as more children need access to support closer to home. Meanwhile, Randal Cremer Primary School in Hoxton and De Beauvoir Primary School in Dalston may both be converted into temporary accommodation to help alleviate homelessness in the areas and to keep families in Hackney. A perfect storm of factors has hit London, forcing families to live elsewhere. Brexit, the Covid pandemic, the cost of living crisis and the lack of affordable housing have made it extremely difficult for families to afford to live not just in Hackney but across the city. Hackney Council is also exploring options to transform Colvestone Primary School, which sits just off Ridley Road in the heart of Dalston. The council's preferred option is for the school site to be leased to an organisation 'offering social value'. Interested groups and organisations are being invited to set out their plans for the Colvestone – which has been empty since the school closed last summer. Plans could include the school remaining as an educational facility, but also alternative uses such as the arts, leisure or social enterprise. The council has said it will take a similar approach when a further four schools close their doors this summer, due to pupil numbers plummeting even further. Jo Riley, the headteacher at Randal Cremer school, previously told the Standard that parents unable to afford living in London had been a "huge factor" in the declining school numbers, and her school was left "a ghost town". In an interview with the Standard, the Education Secretary warned that London's plummeting birth rate has become a 'challenge' and other areas of the country could also face a drop in pupil numbers in the years to come. Bridget Phillipson urged councils to 'think creatively' about how closed-down schools could be used to help solve the country's special educational needs (SEND) crisis. Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney, said: 'Like many other boroughs in inner London, Hackney has seen a rapid fall in the number of children attending local primary schools, and having to close these schools as a result has been incredibly tough – for the pupils and their families, for teachers and school staff, some of whom had also been pupils at the schools, and for the wider communities in which they had previously played such an important role. 'We cannot let these buildings sit empty or simply offload them to the highest bidder, but have a duty to ensure they remain important public assets that benefit our communities. 'That's why we're bringing forward plans that not only bring these spaces back into use, but also tackle some of the most difficult issues we face. 'We're putting forward a range of proposals that will help to provide specialist SEND education, support families in critical housing needs, and engage local communities. 'While there is work to do to deliver on these plans, we're committed to keeping the communities who are invested in the future of these buildings informed and involved, starting by encouraging organisations to put forward proposals for Colvestone Primary School.'

July 29 (UPI) -- People around the world apparently feel that they are living better lives than they have in years and are more hopeful for the future, according to Gallup. The global analytics and advisory firm released its Life Evaluation Index on Tuesday, which is based on the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale. The scale asks those polled to first "Please imagine a ladder with steps numbered from zero at the bottom to 10 at the top," with the top of the ladder representing "the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you." It then asks, "On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?" and then "On which step do you think you will stand about five years from now?" In 2024, Gallup asked adults across 142 countries to rate their lives, and a median of 33% rated their lives well enough to be classified as "thriving," which demonstrates a trend of improvements in life evaluation that has risen for more than a decade. This does differ from the 28% population-weighted average of global residents who feel that they are thriving, which leans more toward nations with larger populations, but not enough to affect the overall upward average that has been seen over the past 15 years. Gallup further notes that the global medium tracks closely and remains higher than what was recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that the 2024 median score was 5.9 out of 10, which is close to the 2022 and 2023 findings but higher than most high points noted over the 15-year study. According to the Gallup findings, the lowest point was 2008, when only 20% reported to be thriving. The median 2024 future life rating was 7.2 out of 10, which is actually a tick lower than the 2020 7.3 peak recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. As for those who rate their lives as "suffering," that number crested at 12% from 2012 to 2014, but accordingly, 2024 came in at its lowest point, at 7%.

Chicago's 'Rooftop Pastor' to embark on epic cross-country journey to benefit America's troubled youth

A Chicago pastor, known for his unconventional forms of activism, is taking the next step in trying to inspire the country's youth. Pastor Corey Brooks, known as "Rooftop Pastor," is preparing to walk 3,000 miles from New York to Los Angeles this September. He said his goal is to raise awareness and funding for community development in Chicago, and for underserved youth across the country. "Our country has gotten away from God, our families and communities have gotten away from God, and we need a spiritual awakening in America," Brooks told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. "That's one of the reasons why I'm walking across America, to take the hope to people across cities and suburbs and countryside to let them know that we can change things." Brooks gained national attention in 2011 when he spent 94 days living on the roof of a rundown Chicago motel to protest violence and the deaths of young people in his community. The pastor aimed to raise money to demolish the abandoned motel, which he said had become a hub for drugs and crime. That demonstration was a success and led to the founding of Project H.O.O.D., a non-profit aimed at helping at-risk youths escape poverty and violence. The organization's website says it provides mentorship, training, and community support to local residents. "In Chicago, we've taken one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in all of America, and we've transformed it," said Brooks of their previous work. Now, he wants his latest mission, dubbed the "Walk Across America," to help him aid even more young people. The journey's goal is to raise $25 million in private donations to finish building Project H.O.O.D.'s 90,000-square-foot Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center in Chicago, debt-free. Brooks said he aspires to spread Project H.O.O.D. throughout the country. "We have a school to put in place. Our goal is to plant Project H.O.O.D. across the country," Brooks said. "That's one of the reasons why we're walking to raise these funds. It's not just a walk about raising money, but it's a walk about raising merit." Brooks said the effort has already received support from private citizens, business leaders, and donors. "We're building a 90,000-square-foot center. And that's because of the help of [the] American people and [the] Fox Network," he said, expressing gratitude to those who have already supported his walk. Brooks said he hopes his walk will teach others that faith and hard work can help people do great things. "I really believe America still works," he said. "When we have faith and hard work and vision activated, we can make anything happen in America."
