Can Posh give Fry birthday gift against old friends Blues?

Can Posh give Fry birthday gift against old friends Blues?

BBC News11-04-2025

It is a competition that began quietly last September as the Bristol Motors Trophy and ends at Wembley on Sunday in front of a 70,000-plus audience as the Vertu Trophy final. It also has Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry, in the week that he turned 80, hoping to witness his Posh side beat Blues and deny Chris Davies' already promoted side a repeat of his achievement of winning the 'lower league and cup double' when he was Birmingham City manager 30 years ago.No wonder it seems more like 'the Barry Fry final'.Admittedly, though, there is a bit more to it than that. If Posh boss Darren Ferguson wins, it will be a record fourth triumph for him as player and manager in this competition - and they will become the first side to win the trophy in successive years. If he loses, it will be a first-ever Wembley defeat for Posh, who have the best record in finals there out of the 92 clubs in the Premier League and the EFL - five out of five. With an official 43,000-strong following of Blues fans, which could touch 50,000, and well over half that of Posh fans making the journey too, Sunday's final is once again a glorious celebration of lower league football. It is a competition that not too many focus on at the qualifying-round stages each season, but annually gathers pace like a runaway train once the Wembley arch is in sight, just as with the old 'twin towers'.One slight spanner in the works is that there are no trains heading from Birmingham Moor Street and though Blues' Solihull heartland straight to Wembley Stadium this Sunday - due to "staff shortages"., external
Blues and Posh in the Trophy
Whatever happens in Sunday's final, it will mean at least one alteration to football's history books. With two previous victories each, a third will take the winners level with Bristol City's record three triumphs.Holders Peterborough's perfect Wembley record has seen them twice pick up the EFL Trophy under Ferguson in 2014 and 2024, and win three play-off finals in 1992, 2000 and 2011, the last of which was also under Ferguson. While Posh can become the first side to successfully defend the trophy, Birmingham have an even more sensational record. They have only played in this competition five times in its many different guises in the 44 years since it began life as the Football League Group Cup in 1981 - and yet this is Blues' third final, having won it both in 1991 with Lou Macari and again in 1995. And they also won on their first visit to the rebuilt Wembley - the shock 2011 League Cup final win over Arsenal. It adds up to an overall competition record of played 26, won 21.
How they got to Wembley
Birmingham put a combined 11 goals past Shrewsbury Town and Fulham Under-21s but they kicked off the EFL Trophy campaign by losing a drawn West Midlands derby against Walsall on penalties. In the knockout stages they were then on the road, seeing off Exeter City, Swindon Town and Stevenage before a memorable night under the St Andrew's lights against Bradford City.As for Ferguson's Posh, they won all three of their group games, at Gillingham and then home wins over Stevenage and Crystal Palace Under-21s.They then put out Northampton Town, Walsall and Cheltenham, all on home soil, before ruining the prospect of an all-American owned final with Tom Brady's Blues, by coming from 2-0 downto beat Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham on penalties in the semi-final at a stunned Racecourse Ground.
Sunday's team news
Davies will recall top scorer Jay Stansfield after rotating his squad for Tuesday's trip to London Road, when the visitors' 2-1 win clinched promotion from League One.But his first-choice line-up has rather picked itself of late and the key questions are which two players will not make his 18-man matchday squad, for a potential chance to come off the bench.Neither of his back-up strikers, 16-goal Alfie May and the long-serving Lukas Jutkiewicz, have ever played at Wembley before.Peterborough are forced into at least three defensive changes from the midweek dress rehearsal.On-loan Stockport County man Sam Hughes, almost an ever-present since his January move, is cup-tied, as are Tayo Edun, who played in an earlier round for Charlton Athletic, and Carl Johnston, who did the same for Fleetwood.
What the managers say
Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:"When you get to these sort of occasions, you have to tell players they're not starting or, worse, they're not involved. And it's not a nice part of my job."We've got some numbers back now and I've got some tough decisions to make. We've got 21 players available - and only 18 places in the squad. And it's actually going to be tougher to pick the players on the bench than it is the ones in the starting line-up."I've already told the lads that I expect we'll use 15 outfield players. It's Wembley. A big occasion. A hot day and a massive pitch."It's great for the fans that we've got another day out at Wembley - and great for the players too. Wembley takes care of itself and you'd expect a strong performance from my team. My focus has always been on the league but I might feel a bit different when I wake up Sunday morning." Birmingham City boss Chris Davies told BBC Radio WM:"Tuesday night was something special. To go there and get promoted for sure was one of those things you never forgot. Nobody left for 25 minutes."Peterborough will be a wounded animal. They've lost at home and they will want to put that right. They've got some talent and speed. They're the fourth highest scorers in this league."But every single game this season, we've been up for it. We've not got carried away with what happened in midweek. We just want more of it. "To get a team to Wembley is one thing, to lead the team out is another. My family will be there and it will mean a lot. Anyone in this country knows what Wembley means."

Chelsea exile four players from CWC squad but hand chance to young star

Andrey Santos has been named in Chelsea's Club World Cup squad with four players left out of the group travelling to the US. Chelsea and Manchester City will be the Premier League's representation at the revamped competition which gets underway on Sunday in Florida. Blues midfielder Santos will have a role to play following an excellent season on loan at Strasbourg. The Brazilian is the only member of Chelsea's vast loan army to return to the first-team squad for the Club World Cup hoping to be part of Enzo Maresca's plans next season. Central midfield is an area of the pitch where Chelsea are blessed with talent in with Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia battling for game time. 'I want to play, I want to get minutes so I can earn my place at the World Cup. I want to establish myself at Chelsea, I want to play regularly and be an undisputed starter and win titles in this shirt.' Santos will hope game time in the US can solidify his place in the side ahead of the new Premier League season with new signings Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr also in the squad. But the futures of a number of other Chelsea stars look bleak. Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix and Axel Disasi are among those to have been left out with the trio expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. Sterling and Felix endured thoroughly underwhelming spells away from the club on loan – Sterling spending the season at Arsenal and Felix shipped out to AC Milan just six months after returning to Stamford Bridge. Disasi joined Aston Villa on loan in January having been deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca. More Trending Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has also been left out of the squad. The goalkeeper excelled at Strasbourg alongside Santos last season but will have no role to play in the US despite Chelsea missing out on a deal to sign Milan sot stopper Mike Maignan. Enzo Fernandez sent off for horrifying head stamp but it's good news for Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has endured a shocking international fortnight but his Argentina woes might actually prove to be a positive for the Blues heading into next season Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez is facing an international ban after being sent off for brutally kicking an opponent in the HEAD. The midfielder started in Argentina's World Cup qualifying match against Colombia on Tuesday but lasted just 70 minutes before getting dismissed. Fernandez raised his boot too high as he attempted to challenge Kevin Castano and made contact with his opponent's face. The shocking challenge immediately drew blood, with Castano needing medical treatment. ‌ And the referee barely hesitated as he brandished a straight red card to the Chelsea man, just the second dismissal of his entire career. Fernandez, 24, will now likely face a three-match ban on the international stage. ‌ He had only just returned from a suspension having missed the first game of the international break against Peru. And while Fernandez will be disappointed to miss the next fixtures in September, his absence might actually be good news for Chelsea. Fernandez faces a hectic few months on the club front. He is set to be named in the Blues' squad for the upcoming Club World Cup in the USA. Should Enzo Maresca's side go all the way, Fernandez could potentially be in action all the way up until July 13. Fernandez will then face a short break before the 2025/26 Premier League season gets underway just over a month later on August 16, with pre-season also set to take place before then. His ban over the September internationals gives the midfielder a chance for a well-earned break. Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has previously suggested that the Blues could be on the back foot next season due to their participation in the Club World Cup. He said: 'I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there. I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there to play this tournament for the first time so there are mixed feelings about it. 'I decided not to worry too much because why should I? It is a given and no one knows what will be the outcome of it or the effect. We will deal with the effect when the effect comes and let's see. We have a lot of teams in the Champions League next season and European football and let's see.' ‌ Fernandez's red card was not the end of the drama in Argentina's clash with Colombia. Liverpool star Luis Diaz had given his side the lead with a brilliant solo effort ahead of Fernandez's dismissal. Lionel Messi was then surprisingly substituted at his own request only for Thiago Almada to equalise with a precise finish for the reigning world champions. Four Chelsea players brutally axed from Club World Cup squad by Enzo Maresca

Chelsea travel to the Club World Cup this summer to face LAFC, Flamengo and Espérance in the US and Blues boss Enzo Maresca has already made some brutal calls when it comes to his squad Chelsea have axed almost £150m worth of talent from their Club World Cup squad including Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix. The Blues are set to travel over to the US over the coming days as they get their tournament underway. Enzo Maresca 's side will take on MLS side LAFC in the group stage ahead of clashes with Flamengo and Tunisian outfit Esperance. Ahead of the tournament, the Blues boss has made a number of brutal decisions when it comes to his squad. ‌ £50m man Raheem Sterling has been left at home following his dreadful loan spell with Arsenal last season. £45m signing Joao Felix has also been axed. ‌ The Portuguese forward only returned to Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis last summer but was sent out on loan to AC Milan after just a few months. Defender Axel Disasi is also among those to have been omitted after spending the second-half of last season with Aston Villa. However, the most surprising call is potentially the decision to drop goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian was expected to step up after Chelsea's failure to sign French stopper Mike Maignan from AC Milan. He performed excellently on loan with French side Strasbourg last term and would have provided competition for Chelsea's current crop of goalkeepers Robert Sánchez, Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders. But the West London side have reasoned that the Club World Cup represents an extension of the 2024/25 season so want consistency over their loanees - the majority of which have been left behind. The only exception to that rule is the addition of Andrey Santos who has returned to the club ahead of the tournament. A number of clubs are now interested in signing Petrovic permanently, according to The Telegraph. The 25-year-old was signed from New England Revolution in 2023 and made 31 appearances across his debut campaign before moving to Strasbourg on loan. He remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2030. ‌ Meanwhile, Maresca has already pointed to his desire to add the Club World Cup to the Conference League title that Chelsea have already won. He said: 'When you are at Chelsea, your goal is always to win. 'Our goal – each and every single game – will always be to try to win them all. You need to see it [replicating coaches of years gone by] as a source of fantastic motivation. When we're there, that will be one of our goals: to try to win it.'
