Kneecap: will ‘moral outrage' over controversial comments halt the rappers' rise?
Kneecap's
growing fan base, the band's support of Palestine as they performed at the Coachella music festival in California last month didn't raise a ripple of surprise.
The Belfast-based rappers who sing mostly in Irish have been consistent in their vocal opposition to Israel's response to the October 7th
Hamas
attack.
But an American backlash coincided with UK police investigations into comments made by members of the group during concerts.
One appeared to be shouting 'up Hamas, up Hizbullah'.

Footage from another concert appeared to show one of the group shouting 'the only good Tory is a dead Tory' and 'Kill your local MP'.
Kneecap have since apologised to the families of two murdered British MPs. But they also insist the controversy has been manufactured in retaliation against their pro-Palestine stance and to distract from the real story of what's happening in Gaza.

Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins says winning contest is 'a dream come true'
Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins has said being crowned the 2025 International Rose of Tralee is "a dream come true" and admits she "never expected this to happen". The 20-year-old, who has become the first-ever Laois Rose to take the title, explained how she's watched the popular RTÉ One show "every year for as long as I can remember". Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1 on Wednesday, she said: "I think I've been watching it since I was about three or four - and I don't think I've missed a single year." Asked what was going through her mind when she was announced as the winner and was presented with her sash by last year's Rose, New Zealand's Keely O'Grady, Katelyn said she was worried about falling over. "To be honest, my legs were crossed and I thought I was going to fall over to the left side to the Arizona Rose. I was so worried that I was going to fall over," she said. "That's really all that was going through my head." Shortly after her big win, Katelyn embraced her parents and granny - a moment which she'll never forget. "And then I just hugged my mam, dad, and granny. They're rally, really proud of me and gave me the tightest hugs when I went down to greet them. I'm just so delighted to represent my family and our community in Laois," she said. Opening up about her rose tattoo, which is a tribute to her late granny who passed away in June 2023, Katelyn said she "thought the rose was a lovely touch". "She was an avid gardener when she was at home. Her garden was full of beautiful roses - red, pink, orange, yellow, white - every colour under the sun. I loved them, and they smelled absolutely fantastic," she recalled. From the village of Ballyouskill, on the Laois-Kilkenny border, Katelyn is an apprentice electrician currently in her third phase of training, with plans to pursue an engineering degree. Katelyn said she is thrilled to have had the opportunity to participate in this year's contest and hopes that she has inspired young girls throughout Ireland. "You always look up at that girl on stage and think, 'I'd love to be her. I'd love to showcase my talent. I'd love to tell the world who I am.' "I think that's every little girl's dream in Ireland. I'm just so happy that I got the opportunity to do it. I've experienced the Rose Tour, which has been absolutely incredible. I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls to do it with. And Tralee itself - it was absolutely astonishing," she added. Katelyn said the Rose of Tralee represents Irish women who are "strong" and "unbelievably talented". "We represent that Irish women are so strong. We create such a sisterhood together. We are unbelievably talented and intelligent, and we can do anything we put our minds to, no matter what other people say to us." This year's festival brought together 32 International Roses from communities across Ireland and around the world. Over five days, they enjoyed the hospitality of Tralee, along with street parades, music, and entertainment as part of the Féile Trá Lí celebrations.

Kneecap rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh arrives in court for alleged support of terrorist group

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, is accused of displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah at a gig in November last year. Demonstrations in support of the rapper have been organised outside Westminster Magistrates' Court in London where he is due to appear on Wednesday, as well as in Dublin. The Metropolitan Police has imposed conditions limiting where the demonstration outside the court can take place on Wednesday, saying they were needed to 'prevent serious disruption'. In response the rap group described this move as a 'calculated political decision' that was 'designed to try and portray support for Kneecap as somehow troublesome' and 'asked supporters to go out of your way to be compliant with all instructions issued, irrespective of how pitiful'. Ó hAnnaidh received a rockstar welcome when he appeared at the same court in June, supported by fellow bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh. He was greeted by a festival-like atmosphere for his first court appearance, with dozens of fans waving flags, playing drums and one supporter setting off a smoke canister. The court previously heard the 27-year-old defendant is 'well within his rights' to voice his opinions on the Israel-Palestine conflict, but the alleged incident at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, was a 'wholly different thing'. Mo Chara supported by fans as he returns to court over alleged terror offence
Kneecap's Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara, is today appearing in court after allegedly supporting a proscribed terror organisation. In November last year, at a gig in London, he was accused of displaying a flag in support of the terror group Hezbollah. The group have continuously denied the allegations that Óg Ó hAnnaidh is facing. Demonstrations to support the musician have been arranged outside of Westminster Magistrates, as well as in Dublin, Ireland. London's Metropolitan Police have since imposed conditions, limiting where demonstrations can take place outside of the court, stating that they need to "prevent serious disruption." The rap trio have branded the move "a calculated political decision designed to try and portray support for Kneecap as somehow troublesome." They added: "There is no basis for this, our last hearing was entirely peaceful and a loving show of solidarity with the most disruptive attendees the right wing media." They said in a statement: "We know all of our supporters will be, but please go out of your way to be compliant with all instructions issued, irrespective of how pitiful." In court last month, prosecutor Michael Bisgrove said that Óg Ó hAnnaidh was "well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity, as is anybody else." He added: "The allegation in this case is a wholly different thing and deals with the video recording showing that, in November of last year, Mr O'Hanna wore and displayed the flag of Hezbollah … while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah." Responding, Brenda Campbell, Óg Ó hAnnaidh said that the charge was too late as it came more than six months after the alleged crime took place. Campbell added: "If we are right in relation to that, then this court has no jurisdiction and there ends the case." Óg Ó hAnnaidh is yet to enter a plea to the charge.
