Drivers' Championship leader Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Belgium Grand Prix Sprint Race, setting a blistering time which rival Max Verstappen could not beat.
Piastri cleared Verstappen by more than four-tenths and cleared his teammate Lando Norris by six-tenths.
The Australian driver topped the times during Free Practice 1 as well, although he narrowly missed out in SQ2 after his lap was deleted for exceeding the limits.
After the session, Piastri addressed his "scare" during the second part of qualifying.

Photo by"It was a good lap. A little scare in SQ2 with the lap deletion but the car has been mega all day. I feel like I was able to put in a lot of good laps. Thanks to the team, the car has been great," he said.
"This is a track I love. It's my favourite one of the year. Maybe that gave me an extra couple of tenths.
"When the car is handling as well as it was today, it's a pleasure."
Even though he is starting at the top, he will need to watch out for Verstappen, who appears rapid at one of his best tracks.
The RB21 was set up well, and Piastri is well aware of the threat behind him for the sprint race start.
"Red Bull are quick in a straight line. That will make life difficult and Spa is probably the worst track to have pole at," he added.
"I think the pace in the car is really strong and I felt good today, so hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow."
Piastri has the opportunity to grow his championship lead again on Saturday, given that his only true rival for the title is his teammate Lando Norris, who appears out of sorts with the car at Spa.
He is eight points ahead of Norris and a whopping 69 points ahead of Verstappen. In a title race, a sprint race win could help Piastri gain a big edge heading into the upcoming summer break.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Chargers got some devastating news as it was revealed that star offensive lineman Rashawn Slater was lost for the 2025 season. Slater went down during practice on Thursday and had to be carted off the field. Read more: Chargers' Rashawn Slater Carted Off Field With Potentially Serious Injury The scene revolving around Slater described a somber incident, as Slater had to be helped onto a medical cart, while teammates all went to offer their support. Just hours following the news, the Chargers confirmed that he suffered a torn patellar tendon and will miss the entire 2025 season. Rashawn Slater sustained a torn patellar tendon in today's practice and will undergo surgery to repair the injury. He will miss the 2025 season and be placed on Injured Reserve. — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) August 7, 2025 Losing Slater for the 2025 season is horrible, especially considering he just signed a massive extension with the team. What is Rashawn Slater's Contract? EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 12: Rashawn Slater #70 of the Los Angeles Chargers blocks during mandatory minicamp at The Bolt on June 12, 2025 in El Segundo, California. EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 12: Rashawn Slater #70 of the Los Angeles Chargers blocks during mandatory minicamp at The Bolt on June 12, 2025 in El Segundo, news: Texans' CJ Gardner-Johnson Believed to Have Suffered Torn Achilles Slater signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension with the organization, which included $92 million in guaranteed money. The contract was signed on July 27. The $92 million guaranteed in the contract is the most ever given to an offensive lineman. Slater worked his way into a historic play with elite play that includes two Pro Bowl nods and a Second-team All-Pro nod. Slater was responsible not only for helping to protect quarterback Justin Herbert, but he was also instrumental in helping the run game. The Chargers relied on a run game that wore down opponents in 2024. What Will the Chargers Do Next? The Chargers have some solid offensive linemen on the team who may need to move over. With Joe Alt being the premier left tackle, he may move over to right tackle to make up for losing Slater. Ryan Nelson could be the presumed starting left tackle. Trey Pipkins III might also remain as the team's starting right tackle, leaving Alt to remain on the left side. It would be believed that the Chargers would look into signing some veteran backups, as losing Slater is a massive issue that could affect the team down the line. There are plenty of available free agent offensive linemen that the Chargers could target, or they may wait until teams start trimming their rosters to 53 following the conclusion of training camp, leading to some quality players looking for their next team. The good news is that Slater has $92 million guaranteed on his contract, so he is good for the future, considering the injury and the tough rehab to make it back. The bad news is the Chargers are now at a massive loss. For more on the Chargers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

FedEx Cup bubble: Who's up, who's down after the first round of 2025 St. Jude Championship
Elvis has left the building but Rickie Fowler isn't ready to check out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs just yet. In Presley's hometown of Memphis, Fowler posted a bogey-free 4-under 66 at TPC Southwind in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. 'I think going around this place whenever you can go around with no bogeys or very few, it's definitely a good sign,' Fowler said. He sits T-7, four back of 18-hole leader Akshay Bhatia, who posted 62. 'This was the kind of start that you want. Not 8-under like Akshay did, but 4-under is a solid start, and like you said, it's just Thursday, so we'll try and build on it from here.' In the tournament within a tournament to finish in the top 50 in the season-long FedEx Cup points race, Fowler entered the week with work to do. He started the week at No. 64 and needs a minimum of a T-17 finish. That sweat on his face? That's from the hot, humid 90-degree weather. Fowler otherwise is trying to remain as cool as a cucumber. 'I know I need a good finish. I don't know exactly where that is. Obviously the higher the finish, the better chance I have. A win would take care of a lot of things,' he said. 'I mean, I know roughly, but I just need to go play some good golf and put myself where I'm in a position and have a chance to go win on Sunday.' Fowler, who is projected to improve to No. 48, is one of two players who is on target to move into the top 50 along with Bud Cauley, who made eight birdied to shoot 6-under 64 and share second after the first round. 'I drove it in the fairway, which is nice,' Cauley said. 'You have to be in the fairway. The rough is impossible.' Cauley has had a resurgent season with four top 10's and eight top 25s. He entered the week at No. 53 in the points race and is projected to leap to No. 22. How much is making the BMW and the perks that come with it – entry into all eight signature events next season – been on his mind? 'I'd love to be there and love to play, but I have to take care of this week first,' he said. Two players moving in, of course, means two players had to move out. Jake Knapp, who entered the week at No. 47, had a rollercoaster day. His five birdies were canceled out by five bogeys. He also made a double bogey en route to 2-over 72. He's projected to drop to No. 54. Australian Min Woo Lee wasn't cooking on Thursday. He shot 6-over 76 and was dead last in the field of 69. He entered the week as the 'Bubble Boy' at No. 50. A triple at 13 did the most damage. The new Bubble Boy? It's projected to be Jordan Spieth. FedEx Cup Playoffs projected standings from Nos. 46-55 46. Wyndham Clark (up 3) 47. Tom Hoge (down 7) 48. Rickie Fowler (up 16) 49. Aldrich Potgieter (down 6) 50. Jordan Spieth (down 2) 51. Kurt Kitayama (up 1) 52. Joe Highsmith (up 2) 53. J.T. Poston (down 2) 54. Jake Knapp (down 7) 55. Chris Kirk (down 3)

Chargers sign TE Thomas Yassmin
The Chargers swapped players who are part of the NFL's International Player Pathway training program. They announced Thursday they signed tight end Thomas Yassmin, and in a corresponding move, they waived tight end Jordan Petaia with an injury designation. Yassmin spent the 2024 season on the Broncos' practice squad via the IPP program. He played college football at the University of Utah, redshirting in 2018 before starting 10 of 47 games played for the Utes the next five seasons (2019-23). In his collegiate career, Yassmin caught 22 passes for 396 yards and seven touchdowns. A native of Sydney, Australia, Yassmin played rugby and basketball at The Scots College in New South Wales, Australia. He was named to the Australian Schools Barbarians all-star team, which played in Fiji and New Zealand at the Tri Nations Series in 2017. Petaia is a native of Melbourne, Australia. He has appeared in a pair of Rugby World Cups (2019 in Japan and 2023 in France) for the Wallabies, becoming the youngest Australian to play at a World Cup in 2019 at 18 years old. He trained in the IPP program over 10 weeks at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, culminated by showcasing his skills at a Pro Day at the University of South Florida on March 26. The IPP program, established in 2017, is designed to offer elite athletes from around the world with experience in other sports the opportunity to improve and develop their skills to earn a spot on an NFL roster.
