
Taoiseach hails ambitious new €200 million project to redevelop Cork Airport as he launches plans
However, for some the new plans will signal the end of an era, as the airport's much-loved old terminal, with its fountain and glass elevator, is set for demolition, to make way for a brand-new pier, further increasing the airport's handling capacity, set to be built by 2032.
The brand-new plans show a confidence that the airport will continue its unheralded growth, with passenger numbers up 50% in the last decade, and which Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien says plays 'a crucial role…for our connectivity and economic prosperity.'
The first major change will be the construction of a new mezzanine floor, in which a brand-new security system will be rolled out, bringing a much-requested change for passengers departing from the country's fastest growing airport.
The new system, estimated to be in place by December of next year, will now eliminate the need to remove liquids, gels, pastes and large electronic items from passengers' cabin baggage. The new security area will also incorporate a new fast-track lane, while a new executive lounge is set to be built, with a larger capacity than the current facility.
'Today is a momentous day for Cork Airport with the launch of an ambitious Capital Development Plan which emphasises the importance of the airport to both the regional and national economy,' said Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who was on-hand to launch the plans.
'Cork Airport has become a critical component of our national transport infrastructure and as Ireland's fastest growing airport, its continued development is paramount. I have no doubt that the benefits of this plan will only bring further growth to what is already a thriving airport.'
An additional 630 parking spaces in the Holiday Blue car park are expected to be in place by July 2026, while plans are also in place for the future expansion of the Express Red car park also. By the third quarter of next year, the Dublin Airport Authority plans to refurbish a current cargo building into another passenger area, enabling two more passenger gates to be opened.
"With Project Ireland 2040, we're expecting a big population boost in the southern region. Cork's ambition of becoming a major European city of size and scale is a key part of this plan,' said DAA CEO, Kenny Jacobs.
'DAA's €200m Capital Development Plan is set to keep Cork Airport serving the south of Ireland, both economically and socially, making it a crucial part of the region's infrastructure. A new solar farm on the site of the existing Holiday Blue car park is due to be in place by August of next year, while the major change is set to come in 2032, when the old terminal and old control tower will be demolished, allowing for the construction of a new pier, bringing even more boarding gates and more capacity, as the airport broke the 4 million passenger mark for the first time in its history last year.
The plan kicks into action as early as this summer, as passengers will be able to see the first 'shovel-ready' elements of the plan commencing, with work starting on the construction of the new mezzanine floor, to extend over the existing arrivals area, and the delivery of a new oversized baggage security facility.

Tractor sales surge in Ireland but John Deere down 9% globally
Despite the strong performance of the Irish tractor market this summer, the big manufacturers are still wearing long faces as they record depressed sales and avoid making any optimistic forecasts for the near future. Indeed, in its latest news release on the company's performance in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, John Deere made no mention of its expectations at all in its summary. Instead, it focussed on its continuing plans for digital technology when looking forward. In outlining its financial position, the company noted that worldwide net sales and revenues decreased 9%, to $12.018 billion, for Q3 2025. This represented a decrease of 18%, to $33.290 billion, for the first nine months of 2025. Despite the poor results, John Deere is doubling down on its digital farming efforts Net sales were $10.357 billion for Q3 and $28.338 billion for nine months, compared with $11.387 billion and $35.484 billion last year, respectively. Although the figures are depressing for the company overall, a closer look reveals one or two notable trends. The most obvious is that it is North America which is taking the biggest hit, with projected revenue from this region being down 30% for the 2025 fiscal year. Revenue from Europe, on the other hand, is likely to be much the same as 2024, although a slight decline - no greater than 5% - is possible. The other big takeaway is that it is the big ticket items which are suffering the most. Production and Precision Agriculture may have been down 16% overall but Small Agriculture and Turf showed a decline of just 1%. John Deere has not been idle in the face of this decline and notes that it has proactively managed inventory and matched production to retail demand. It also notes that the operating profit declined 50% in Q3 for Production and Precision Agriculture while lamenting it had experienced 'unfavourable price realisation' in this segment. This would suggest a degree of price cutting to shift stock, which may not appear too healthy in the short-term but looking ahead it clears the dealers yards ready for the latest machinery.

Former Dublin footballer Michael Darragh Macauley steps down as CEO of Sanctuary Runners
The eight-time All-Ireland winner, who has worked for Dublin's Northeast Inner City (NEIC), took over from Sanctuary Runners' founder Graham Clifford a year ago. The former Dublin GAA star will conclude his time with the Sanctuary Runners in the coming weeks. 'I've had an amazing year at the helm of this very positive movement,' Macauley said. 'I've made the difficult decision to move on to other projects, but I am still very committed to the power of community integration through sport. 'Although I will no longer be Chief Executive, I plan to continue to show solidarity in my Sanctuary Blue and I truly value the great friendships I've made all around the country,' he added. Sharing the news on LinkedIn, he said it had been an 'absolute privilege' steering the blue ship for the past year. Sanctuary Runners was named 'Community Organisation of the Year' at this year's Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards under his stewardship.
