Steelers Waive Massive Rookie Offensive Lineman after Injury
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived rookie offensive tackle Gareth Warren with an injury designation, the team announced on Tuesday. Warren was injured during the team's second preseason game, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday, when he was removed while being evaluated for a concussion. He did not practice with the team on Monday. A 6-foot-5 1/2, 328-pound product of Lindenwood University and Hawaii native, Warren first joined the Steelers as a tryout player at rookie minicamp this spring. He impressed enough in the three-day camp to earn a contract, and spent training camp and preseason. Warren started out at as a guard at Lindenwood, which is in Lake Charles, Missouri, in 2021, the program's final season at the NCAA Division II level. In 2022, Warren and Lindenwood moved up, becoming members of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I. Warren made four starts and played six games as a true freshman in 2021, earning All-GLVC third-team honors. In 2022, he started all 10 games at left guard and was an All-OVC second-team selection. For his junior season in 2023, Warren switched from left guard out to left tackle. The transition was a smooth one, as he allowed just two sacks on the season, per Pro Football Focus. In 2024, Warren and the Lions offensive line helped pave the way for an OVC-best 173.7 yards per game. After the season, he was invited to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he was first scouted by the Steelers. The Steelers released Warren to make room on the roster to sign free agent outside linebacker Kenny Willekes on Tuesday. Because Warren was waived with an injury designation, he will revert to the team's injured reserve list if he clears waivers. Warren will either then spend the entire 2025 season on the injured reserve list or reach an injury settlement with the team. Patriots Draft Pick Admits 'Big Curve' Adjusting From College to NFL
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New England Patriots hoped to have found their left tackle of the future in this year's draft. New England selected offensive tackle Will Campbell to help beef up the offensive line. By picking him at No. 4 overall, the organization obviously expects big things from Campbell and for the rookie, it's been quite the adjustment from college to the NFL. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - AUGUST 16: Will Campbell #66 of the New England Patriots looks on during the third quarter of the NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on August... MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - AUGUST 16: Will Campbell #66 of the New England Patriots looks on during the third quarter of the NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on August 16, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. More"I'm a rookie. There's a lot of stuff that I'm trying to work on and become better to become the type of player I want to become. So, it's everything," Campbell told MassLive's Mark Daniels. "A big curve from college football to the NFL. There's so many things that you try to come out here and get better with every single rep." Campbell was well-known in college for not allowing a single sack in his three seasons at LSU. He is already responsible for a sack allowed this preseason, but despite that, he is still making a good impression within the organization. "Will's been solid. He's getting better every day," said Patriots executive VP of player personnel Eliot Wolf, per Daniels. "We're excited about what he can do. (His) play style is phenomenal. He's only getting better each other." Will Campbell this preseason: The only OT with an 80+ pass blocking and run blocking grade 👀 — PFF (@PFF) August 18, 2025 For Campbell, the matchups won't be any easier headed toward the final week of the preseason and the first week of the regular season. New England's next two games will be against the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders. That means there is a good possibility that Campbell will have to match up against any combination of Brian Burn, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter and Maxx Crosby. Burns, Thibodeaux and Crosby are three of the premier pass rushers in the NFL, while Carter is expected to be one of the top rookies in the league. Those two games will be important for Campbell to show that he can hang with some of the league's best defensive players in just his first season as a professional. Patriots rookie Will Campbell shuts up critics with newest PFF stat
New England Patriots offensive tackle Will Campbell has had a stellar preseason up to this point, and the latest metrics from Pro Football Focus prove it. Campbell is the only offensive tackle with an 80-plus pass blocking and run blocking grade, according to PFF. The Patriots' rookie first-round pick has an 87.6 run blocking grade and an 80.1 pass blocking grade so far this preseason. While PFF's metrics don't tell the whole story, they do indicate that Campbell is finding early success in the NFL. This statistic is great news for a Patriots team hoping their investment in Campbell to be their long-term franchise left tackle pays off. The position was a revolving door of players who struggled to protect quarterback Drake Maye and help out in the run game last year. Campbell could help bring stability to the Patriots' offensive line for years to come. A top-five draft pick ideally is capable of making an impact right away, and it appears Campbell is in line to do exactly that. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
