Odisha govt intensifies crackdown on fertiliser hoarding and black marketing
The Agriculture department has so far conducted surprise checking at 1,993 retail points and issued show cause notice to 426 retailers and stop-sale notice to eight retailers for violation of the fertilisation control order (FCO). Similarly, 25 dealers' license have been suspended or cancelled for violation of FCO rules.
The enforcement activities were stepped up following publication of a report in The New Indian Express on black marketing and hoarding of fertilisers in Bargarh district. Taking note of the report which highlighted the shortage of popular granular fertilisers like DAP, urea and single super phosphate or Gromor in Bargarh and adjoining districts, Agriculture Minister KV Singh Deo directed the department to take stringent action against dealers, retailers and private traders creating artificial shortage to jack up the prices.
As some of the dealers are forcing farmers to buy nano-fertilisers, the department has instructed IFFCO authorities to refrain from any such activities. The farmers are free to make independent choice of fertilisers without any compulsion. The MARKFED officials have been instructed to take steps accordingly.
'Enforcement activities are being conducted across the state by surprise checking of fertiliser retailer and wholesaler points and verifying any type of illegal activities to protect the interest of the farmers. It is the prime objective of the government to ensure availability of proper quality fertilisers at fixed price at the right place and at the right time. To check black marketing, hoarding and sale of spurious fertilisers, enforcement squads have been formed both at district and block-level,' Singh Deo said.
Asserting that there is adequate stock of fertilisers, sources in the department said the state is likely to receive 6.82 lakh tonne of fertilisers by end of July, out of which, 5 lakh tonne has been already received. The state had pre-positioned 2.94 lakh tonne before April 1, 2025, making the total availability of fertilisers at 7.94 lakh tonne. Around 3.65 lakh tonne of different grades have been sold to farmers, leaving 4.24 lakh tonne available in different districts as of date, officials said.

UP to select farmers for agri equipment on subsidy through e-lottery system
1 2 Lucknow: The state govt will initiate the process of giving agricultural equipment to farmers on subsidy through e-lottery system on Thursday and Friday. Agriculture department will select the farmers through committees formed under the chairmanship of the district magistrate in all 75 districts. A state govt spokesperson said that the booking of agricultural equipment under the Promotion of Agricultural Mechanization for In-Situ Management of Crop Residue and Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization Scheme and booking of Mini Oil Mill Extraction Unit and Tarpaulin under National Mission on Edible (Oilseed) Scheme has been done by the farmers on the departmental portal. The details of the members of the DLSC (District Level Coordination Committee), a committee constituted under the chairmanship of the district magistrate for e-lottery, will initiate the process. The PDF file of the office memorandum of the committee will also be uploaded on the departmental portal. The agriculture department has issued instructions that such a place should be selected for the process of e-lottery, where the maximum number of farmers can participate. "This process will be done with transparency. For this, arrangements will be made by installing big screens," the spokesperson said. Farmers who are not selected will get their security amount returned within six months. The spokesperson said that SMS should be sent on mobile to the farmers selected in the e-lottery. Along with the information of the last date of uploading information and bills, the farmers selected in the waiting list will also be informed.

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is at the forefront of organic farming, asserted deputy chief minister-cum-Agriculture minister KV Singh Deo on Tuesday. Addressing the 'Virgin Land Security Summit' at India International Centre in New Delhi, Singh Deo said, 'We have begun transforming our pristine tribal regions into organic clusters under Balabhadra Jaivik Chasa Mission. With nearly 32 per cent of our cultivable land seeing minimal chemical use, we are now scaling up with 'One District - One Organic' cluster.' He informed that the state is now focusing on agro-processing units for mango, turmeric, millets and ginger, export-oriented agri parks, organic value chains linked with self-help groups (SHGs), farmer producer organisation (FPOs), millet-based enterprises and eco-farming hubs. 'Odisha is ready with land, a strong policy with subsidies on power, water, capital incentives and fast-track clearances to enable investors and innovators to thrive,' the deputy chief minister said. He extended invitation to global partners and agripreneurs to visit Odisha, a land where nature meets enterprise and tradition meets innovation, to be a part of this transformation. With India having over 60 million hectare of barren and under-utilised land, Singh Deo highlighted that around 20 million hectare was ideal for organic farming. 'With global demand for organic products soaring, this is a golden opportunity for farmers to lead the world in sustainable agriculture,' he said. Bawankule Pushes for People-Centric Development, Weekly Village Visits & Fast-Track Projects Under Annual Plan
Nagpur: Revenue minister and Nagpur district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has directed all departmental heads to actively consult local public representatives while proposing development works under the District Annual Plan (DAP). Emphasising the need for long-term and impactful initiatives, he said the focus should be on meeting public needs, creating local self-employment opportunities, and improving infrastructure. Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Zilla Niyojan Bhawan, Bawankule instructed officials to ensure 100% utilisation of annual plan funds by August 15. He warned that delays would not be tolerated and that all projects must strictly adhere to government guidelines. "Ideas must not remain confined to offices. They should emerge from the ground through the input of elected representatives. Innovative proposals aligned with local needs will shape the district's development," he asserted. He called for a coordinated approach involving the police department, NMRDA, district administration, and Zilla Parishad to ensure seamless and citizen-friendly festival management. In a bid to decentralise governance and make it more responsive, Bawankule mandated that all district-level officers must visit at least one village every week. During his visit to Kodamendhi and Khat villages in Mauda taluka on Monday, he stressed the importance of direct engagement with citizens. "Field visits help officers understand on-the-ground issues — from broken roads to water scarcity. We cannot rely on reports alone; we must see and hear the people ourselves," he said. Locals and former MLA Tekchand Savarkar also participated in the programme. Bawankule assured villagers that complaints raised by sarpanches and citizens would be addressed without delay. Held at multiple locations including Verma Layout (Ambazari), Pannalal Nagar, and Gittikhadan Road, the initiative benefited around 1,000 citizens. Key services provided included Aadhaar updates (97), income certificates (78), caste and domicile certificates (38), ration and voter cards (53), and medical benefit applications (74). Applications were also processed for Ayushman Bharat cards, social welfare schemes, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) services. MLA Krishna Khopade visited the camp along with sub-divisional officer Suresh Bagle, tehsildar Santosh Khande, and deputy tehsildar Apeksha Raich.
