Gardaí investigating a drive-by shooting in Limerick city last month have made a number of arrests. Gardaí said they arrested two men as part of the ongoing investigation into an incident in which a firearm was discharged in the Hyde Avenue area of Ballinacurra Weston on 8 May 2025. During the course of the operation at a domestic residence, gardaí from the Limerick Crime Functional Area also seized suspected controlled drugs at a domestic residence with an estimated value of more than €28,000. The two men, aged in their 20s and late teens, are being questioned at garda stations in Co Limerick under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. The arrests follow an appeal by gardaí for people to contact them in relation to recent violent incidents in Limerick city and its suburbs. This included drive-by shootings and petrol bomb attacks in the Southill and Hyde Road areas. . Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Mr Smart vowed to utilise organised crime legislation "to its fullest" to make people "accountable for the actions that they're taking bringing innocent people into fear". He said there has been "no loss of life" in relation to current activities in Co Limerick, but urged people to be "conscious of that" and "careful of what they're doing".
