Council endorses plan for Gretzky Parkway extension

Council endorses plan for Gretzky Parkway extension

City of Brantford Council endorsed a plan to extend Wayne Gretzky Parkway north of Powerline Road during their Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
As the lands north of Powerline Road get developed and the population continues to grow, the City has been looking into various solutions to help mitigate traffic congestion throughout the area.
Having looked at different options, staff ultimately presented Council with a plan to extend Wayne Gretzky Parkway north of Powerline Road (sitting parallel to Highway 24/King George Road) where it will curve and meet up with Park Road North.
The plan includes replacing the current three-way intersection at Powerline Road and Wayne Gretzky Parkway with a new four-leg roundabout, as well as a new four-leg roundabout where the newly extended Parkway will meet with Highway 24.
The report explained that the extension will feature a four-lane configuration with a median in the middle and a multi-use path on the east side of the extension. As well, the roundabouts will be two lanes and designed to accommodate large vehicles, such as transport trucks and farm vehicles.
While staff currently estimate that the project will cost around $8.5 million, the price could change as the plan is currently in its preliminary stages. The final cost will be refined through the preliminary design and detailed design phases.
According to the report, which was submitted by Jennifer Elliott, the City's Director of Engineering Services, both the city's population and employment are expected to experience significant growth by 2051.
'Brantford's anticipated growth will notably impact local travel demands,' she said. 'By 2051, the city is projected to generate over 89,900 person trips during the A.M. peak period on an average weekday, reflecting a 72 per cent increase from the 52,616 person trips recorded in 2016.'
As outlined in the 2020 Transportation Master Plan Update, the traffic conditions of Brantford's existing arterial and collector road network were observed during typical weekday peak hours, and the following key issues were identified:
As well, the King George Road overpass over Highway 403 is expected to face high traffic demand, with over 60 per cent of the traffic using the route due to regional travel on Highway 403 or Highway 24.
'Adding an extra lane in each direction on King George Road would result in significant property impacts,' said Elliott. 'To alleviate congestion, diverting long-distance traffic from King George Road to Wayne Gretzky Parkway via a potential future extension north of Powerline Road would ease capacity issues near Highway 403 interchange and along King George Road.'
If the plan is passed during an upcoming City Council meeting at the end of May, staff will be directed to issue a notice of completion and will open the 30-day public review period.
'The public will have an opportunity to, during that 30-day review, to provide comments, concerns or issues with the preferred solution,' said Mike Abraham, Brantford's Manager of Infrastructure Planning. 'Staff will then respond to each and one of those comments, and that will be made part of the filing to the MECP [Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks].'
During the meeting, Councillor Richard Carpenter said that he hopes that as traffic increases along Wayne Gretzky Parkway, staff will consider putting in some sort of sound barrier to help with the noise.
'When we re-did Lynden Road and widened it to four lanes from two lanes and put in a centre turning lane; we put in a beautiful sound barrier wall for the residents who backed onto Lynden,' he said. 'It's been there for well over 25 years now, and if you look at it, it's easy to maintain. So, I would like us to use that as an example going forward.'
Councillor Dan McCreary then thanked staff for their work, saying that the presented plan seemed to make sense.
'Councillor Martin and I were at the public hearings, and this option was well received,' he said. 'It certainly makes a lot of sense, even though there will be some disruption in the immediate neighbourhood once we get underway.'
While the item was unanimously carried and Council will still have to give final approval later this month, residents will still have an opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns.

Here's the growth forecast for Greggs shares up to 2027!

Greggs (LSE:GRG) has proved to be one of the FTSE 250's greatest growth shares in recent years. But investor interest in the sausage roll merchant has waned amid rising dangers to its long record of rising profits. Earnings per share (EPS) growth has averaged 12% a year over the last 10 years. But as City forecasts below show, the bottom line looks set to underperform over the short term: Year Predicted earnings per share Annual growth Price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio 2025 135.26p -10% 16.1 times 2026 139.59p +3% 15.6 times 2027 150.25p +8% 14.5 times Importantly, the baker's bottom line is tipped to rise again from 2026, though the predicted growth is still below that long-term average. Right now there are two important questions that investors need to ask. How accurate are current broker estimates? And are Greggs shares a buy following their recent heavy price decline? Though it's stabilised more recently, the former star baker has fallen sharply in value since the autumn. It's not that trading has been awful: like-for-like sales in company-managed shops were up 2.9% in the first 20 weeks of 2025. However, sales growth is down substantially from what investors have become accustomed to. Corresponding sales were up 7.4% in the first 19 weeks of last year. Greggs' worse performance reflects chiefly the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and its effect on consumer spending. Despite its focus on low-cost baked goods, this is providing little protection given tough conditions for its key customer base. Discount retailer B&M is facing the same stresses. It warned this week (4 June) that limited wage growth is 'especially [problematic] for our core lower-income consumer groups'. On top of this, Greggs has faced intense competition as other food-to-go giants rapidly expand. Last month, KFC announced plans to open another 500 restaurants over the next five years, adding extra pressure. Yet, Greggs has potentially lucrative expansion plans of its own. It's raised the number of sites in its portfolio to 2,638 from 1,664 a decade ago. And it has plans to raise the total to 3,500, supported by new manufacturing and logistics facilities in The Midlands. The baker is also ramping up evening trading and investing in delivery to take on its rivals. Given its strong record of execution, I'm optimistic these measures will continue to drive long-term growth. These new store openings will also be focused in fast food hotspots such as airports, train stations, and retail parks. This is a shrewd option as the high street endures a steady decline. Finally, Greggs' flair menu innovation convinces me it can keep thriving in a competitive marketplace. In the last quarter, fresh additions to its over-ice drinks range flew off the shelves, while its pizza boxes and mac and cheese also experienced strong demand. On balance, I'm optimistic the company can rebound from a troubled 2025, as City analysts expect. And I think this makes it a top FTSE 250 share to consider. City of Socorro to launch microtransit service next month

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro will launch its own on-demand microtransit service next month, the City announced in a news release. This comes after the El Paso Transit Authority (ETA) announced that its buses will no longer stop in Socorro, starting July 1. Community meeting highlights end of transit service in Socorro The City of Socorro partnered with The Goodman Corporation to develop a Transit Development Plan (TDP) that focuses on providing transit services in better alignment with the community's needs, according to the news release. The City said the planning process — Socorro ¡Avanzando! — included assessing current transit services and identifying traffic needs and improvement options. The City also engaged people riding ETA's bus routes, community members, families, and stakeholders. The TDP's central recommendation is for the City to launch its own on-demand microtransit service by July 1, with the following features, according to the news release: Operated directly by the City using an existing vehicle fleet and TripMaster software. Service hours: Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — excluding major holidays. Zero-fare service — initially, until demand requires adjustment. Same-day trips, with limited advance reservations. Target wait time: less than 30 minutes for 100 percent of riders. Ability to adapt service as demand and resources evolve. 'Microtransit will offer residents a more accessible, flexible, and responsive transit option compared to the infrequent and hard-to-access fixed-route bus services by ETA,' read the news release. The City said the Socorro ¡Avanzando! TDP is the 'City's independent study of transit's potential in Socorro as a matter of due diligence, to understand how best to improve transit and efficiently utilize limited public resources – to boldly envision 'What could, and should transit be in Socorro?'' In addition, the plan is grounded in the City's recent 2040 Comprehensive Plan process, according to the news release. 'Socorro is a welcoming community that celebrates diversity, preserves its rich culture and history, and fosters economic growth, environmental stewardship, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike. It stands as a symbol of unity and prosperity for future generations,' read the news release. ETA operates the regional bus system serving communities throughout the greater El Paso area. However, as we previously reported, in 2024, the City Council of Socorro voted not to enter into a service agreement with ETA. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Decision day looms in the Wirtz saga as Manchester City await his decision

The saga that threatens to dominate the summer transfer window may have a deadline. Florian Wirtz is the most in-demand player who is potentially available this summer. Manchester City are in the thick of the race to sign the German international. Sacha Tavolieri reported via his official X account that City are the best-placed English side to sign Wirtz. Lastly, Plettenberg reports that Real Madrid could yet Manchester City are awaiting a decision from Florian Wirtz over this summer plans. enter the race to sign Wirtz if they sell Rodrygo. Advertisement Manchester City will know whether or not they got their man relatively soon. It now seems that the Florian Wirtz saga will have an answer relatively quickly. From a Manchester City point of view, they should know what their summer transfer plans look like once Wirtz's decision is made. City will be hoping that their strong relationship with Bayer Leverkusen can help them sign the playmaker they are screaming out for. That remains to be seen at this stage of proceedings. To counter Plettenberg's report that no club has agreed a deal with Leverkusen to sign their prized asset, Sacha Tavolieri has previously reported that City have found a verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal that would see Wirtz land at the Etihad. Now, all that awaits is a decision from Wirtz over his future. But it seems that Manchester City have laid all of the groundwork that could see them land the biggest fish in the summer transfer window. If Manchester City could sign the German international, they'd land the attacking midfielder that they could build Pep Guardiola's squad around for next season and beyond.
