Sustained efforts helped Steel City get 3rd spot, say officials

Jamshedpur: Proving its excellence in urban cleanliness and community driven sanitation practices Jamshedpur bagged 3rd rank in cleanest city in India under 3-10 lakh population category in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25.
It is notable that the city scored an impressive 11,588 out of the 12,500 marks as a result it jumped to 3rd rank from 43rd earlier. The Steel city has also been declared Jharkhand's first Garbage Free City (GFC) with 5-Star rating from 3-Star earlier.
The award was presented by the President Droupadi Murmu at a function organized by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi on Thursday.
"This is a moment of pride for the entire district. The credit goes to the cleanliness conscious people, health workers, civic officials and to the administrative efforts done towards making the city Swachh," said DC, Karn Satyarthi.
The city has also been declared state's First Water+ city with wastewater now being used in parks, nature trails and water bodies.
"The award is a testament to our consistent efforts and our collective sense of civic responsibility.

It would be worth mentioning that Tata Steel through its subsidiary Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TS USIL) shoulders much of the responsibility of the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) in maintaining the cleanliness of the city.
This year, the swachh survekshan was themed RRR-Reduce Reuse and Recycle, with a focus on source segregation and community participation. Jamshedpur was the only city from the state nominated to the swachh survekshan 2024-25 in the 3-10 lakh category nominations.
Officials said that citizens adopted sustainable waste practices such as home composting using wet waste, creative reuse through the waste to wonder initiative, besides, participation in Zero Waste Societies (ZWS) and door-to-door source segregated collection, which helped the city better its ranking.
The responsible disposal through Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and e-waste centers, among other initiatives, played a vital role in source segregation and community participation.
Further continuous campaigns against the hoarding, stocking, sale and use of the single-use plastic items and traders' participation for achieving success in ensuring separate bins for the dry and wet refuse at the shops contributed .
"The swachhta brand ambassadors and sanitation supervisors consistent effort in raising the awareness level of the people towards sustainable environmental practices has been fruitful in achieving the improved rank," said JNAC officials.

Polyandry has long been part of its tradition, although it has become increasingly rare with growing literacy and economic development in the region. While such marriages still take place, elders say many are now solemnised discreetly, though society continues to accept them. Experts attribute the origin of the practice to the need to preserve family land holdings. Division of ancestral land among siblings was avoided through polyandry, while the share of tribal women in property remains a contentious issue in many areas. Around three lakh members of the Hatti tribe live across nearly 450 villages in the Trans-Giri belt of Sirmaur. Though declining, polyandry is still practiced in select areas. Similar traditions were historically observed in Jaunsar Babar in Uttarakhand and the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Kundan Singh Shastri, general secretary of the Kendriya Hatti Samiti — the apex body representing the community — said the practice originated thousands of years ago. 'This tradition was invented to save a family's agricultural land from further division,' he said. Another reason, he explained, was to strengthen brotherhood and foster unity in joint families by allowing even half-brothers to marry the same woman. 'The third reason is a feeling of security. If you have a bigger family, more men, you are more secure in a tribal society,' Shastri said, adding it also helped in cultivating and managing scattered farmlands in remote hilly areas. 'These requirements of tribal families have kept the polyandry system for thousands of years in practice, though these traditions are slowly dying,' he added. In this unique tradition, known locally as 'Jajda', the bride is brought to the groom's village in a procession. At the groom's residence, a ritual called 'Seenj' is performed. A priest chants mantras in the local dialect, sprinkles holy water on the couple, and offers jaggery — a symbolic gesture for sweetness and harmony in their married life, invoking blessings from the family deity, or Kul Devta.

We usually think of 'big oil' as slick fossil fuel 'supermajors' which power modernity, from its automobiles and aviation right down to the smartphone in your hand. However, there is another 'big oil' in our lives — these are the liniments used in everyday products, from bread to baby food, lipsticks to detergent. Some oils are made for cooking, a global trade of over $200 billion in 2024. Of all these inputs, across edibles and usables, palm oil reigns supreme — global production in 2024 was 77 million tonnes, as compared to 21 million for sunflower. Palm oil is expected to expand to 240 million tonnes by 2050. Its plantations are 10% of Earth's permanent cropland — each person consumes an average of 8 kgs palm oil a year. Chemistry — and its intertwined equation with economics — is the driving force behind this domination. Compared to other plant-based oils, palm oil is perennial, less demanding of soil and most productive, generating six times more per acre than sunflower and eight times more than soybeans. With a history of slavery, colonialism and indentured labour, it has always been a cheap material while its combination of fat and consistency lend themselves to multiple products. Given how palm oil is in both pizza and paint, its presence is phantomlike — undiscernible, yet pivotal. However, while that makes palm oil seem regal in our kingdom of commodities, its sweeping cape hides a darker side — palm oil plantations demand cutting down tropical forests. The infernos lit to clear these drive greenhouse gas emissions, making Earth unstable, while the loss of the homes nature gave them has placed wonderful species, from orangutans to elephants, tigers to rhinos, at the fearsome door of extinction. Importantly, while palm oil demand began in the Global North as it enriched itself on the back of slaves, today it is driven by the Global South — India, China and Indonesia use 40% of all palm oil.
