Friendship Day goes old-school style in city

Ranchi: Friendship Day celebrations in Ranchi still carry the warmth of handwritten notes, friendship bands and quirky gifts, long before emojis and Instagram stories took over. Despite the digital wave, the city's youth and grown-ups continue to cherish old-school ways of celebrating friendship. Markets at Albert Ekka Chowk, GEL Church Complex, and Main Road were abuzz on Sunday with teenagers giggling over colourful bands, vintage-style greeting cards, and shelves lined up with mugs printed with quotes like "Partners in Crime" and "Yaari Forever." Arnav Mehta, a Class 12 student of St Xavier's, said, "I came here with my group just like we used to do in school. We didn't want WhatsApp messages this year; we're writing letters. It feels more personal." Shivani Kumari, a second-year B Com student, also said, "We've grown up seeing our seniors exchange bands and cards on the first Sunday of August. Even though we're in college now, the tradition still excites us. I bought scented pens to write individual notes." On the day, greeting card shops saw a welcome revival. At Firayalal, the tiny Archie's-style stalls were surrounded by school-goers and college students hunting for the perfect token of affection. "Friendship Day is that one occasion when cards sell more than phone covers. This year, handmade cards and quirky magnets are trending. I sold over 500 bands in just two days," said S K Tiwari, who runs a gift shop at the GEL Church shopping complex. "The Guy Who Hated Me In School": Woman's Wholesome Friendship Day Post For Husband Goes Viral

On Friendship Day, the internet is abuzz with selfies, heartfelt posts, and trending hashtags, as friends reminisce about shared memories and inside jokes. Amid this, a woman's Friendship Day post about her husband, who was once a classmate she didn't get along with, has gone viral and captured hearts on social media. Aanchal Rawat shared the touching full-circle love story on X, revealing how her former "enemy" became her life partner. In her now-viral post, Mr Rawat recalled how her story with her now-husband started on the wrong foot. She described herself as a girl who avoided boys in school. However, one day, a shy, nerdy classmate tried to offer her lunch- a kind gesture she didn't accept too kindly. In a twist of fate, she ended up breaking his prized Pokémon tiffin box. Fifteen years after parting ways, they reconnected on a matchmaking app, and the rest is history. "I was the kind of girl who didn't want to be friends with boys. A nerdy, shy guy tried to share his lunch with me, and I accidentally broke his Pokémon tiffin box lol.. I think I almost made him cry that day, and he never spoke to me again.. Cut to 15 Years later, I stumbled upon the same nerdy guy on Jeevansathi. His first text was literally 'Will you ever buy me a new tiffin box?' Hamari school time mei dosti toh nahi hui par han hamari shaadi zarur hogi. Happy Friendship Day, Pati Dev," the tweet read, along with a throwback class photo and a wedding picture. Tripura's 1st int'l cricket stadium likely to come up in Dec: Saha

1 2 Agartala: Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha on Sunday said construction of the first international cricket stadium in the state was likely to be completed by December this year at Narsingarh in Agartala. Currently, the state hosts its share of national domestic cricket matches at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium. Saha said the state govt had prioritized development of sports, before adding that in the last seven years, under BJP's rule, Tripura had witnessed a massive development in sporting infrastructure, with special emphasis laid on honing youngsters. "We ensured there was no politics when it came to selection of players, making it a talent-based process," Saha said after inaugurating KC Girls' School Cricket Ground at Kamalpur in Dhalai, where a T10 exhibition match was held between Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) and celebrity cricket team Bengal Tigers. Calling it a "historic day" for Kamalpur, Saha recalled his involvement with the project while serving as TCA president. "When I visited the stadium site in 2017, construction was going on in an unplanned way. I had to put pressure on those involved to correct it. Thanks to the current TCA committee, we could finally inaugurate the ground," the CM said. Criticizing the previous Left Front regime, Saha alleged that sports, including cricket, were heavily politicized. "Talented players were denied opportunities, while those who were comparatively less talented were selected due to political affiliations. Merit was ignored even for Ranji Trophy selections," Saha said. "We are giving jobs based on merit, which earlier was never happened in Tripura," the CM added. Saha said he was keen to develop more such grounds in the state. "Tripura has no shortage of talent, but players need proper facilities to train and our govt has taken steps to support such talent," he added.
