Death toll in south Syria violence tops 300: Monitor - Region
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that since clashes erupted on Sunday, 69 Druze fighters were killed as well as 40 civilians, 27 of whom in "summary executions... by members of the defence and interior ministries", while 165 government forces and 18 Bedouin fighters were also killed, along with 10 members of the government's security forces in Israeli strikes.
An unidentified interior ministry source said in a statement carried by state news agency SANA that "An agreement was reached for a ceasefire in Sweida and the deployment of security checkpoints in the city".
The new ceasefire was reached Wednesday in Sweida, a day after an earlier truce collapsed amid days of violence between Druze and Bedouin tribes.
An Israeli military official said on Wednesday that some troops stationed in the Gaza Strip were to be redeployed to the area of the frontier with Syria, where Israel has struck, claiming to defend the Druze minority.
The military official told reporters during a briefing that some soldiers were "preparing to be deployed on our northern border with Syria" from Gaza, where Israel has been fighting Hamas militants since the Palestinian group's October 2023 attack.
For its part, Washington is talking with both Israel and Syria after the Israelis bombed the Syrian army headquarters in Damascus, the top US diplomat said Wednesday, expressing concern at the attack.
"We're talking to both sides, all the relevant sides on this, and hopefully we can bring it to a conclusion, but we're very concerned," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

Gaza Sees Nearly One Hundred Killed, Hundreds Injured in 48 Hours
H-Tayea The Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed that 98 Palestinians have been killed and 511 others injured by Israeli gunfire within the last 48 hours, marking one of the deadliest short periods in the ongoing war. The ministry also reported disturbing figures about Palestinians who were killed while simply trying to secure basic necessities. In the last two days alone, 14 people were killed and more than 94 injured while attempting to collect humanitarian aid. US envoy Huckabee calls for accountability after Israeli settlers attack church in West Bank village - War on Gaza
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Saturday visited a Christian village in the occupied West Bank and urged accountability for an arson attack by Israeli settlers on an ancient church. In early July, Israeli settlers carried out an arson attack on the village of Taybeh in the area of the ruins of the Byzantine-era Church of Saint George, which dates back to the fifth century. The attack came as violence against Palestinians soars in the West Bank, and last week saw an American-Palestinian killed by Israeli settlers near Ramallah. Ambassador Huckabee, an evangelical Christian and staunch advocate for Israel, said his trip to Taybeh aimed to "express solidarity with the people who just want to live their lives in peace, to be able to go to their own land, to be able to go to their place of worship". "It doesn't matter whether it's a mosque, a church, a synagogue," he told journalists. "It's unacceptable to commit an act of sacrilege by desecrating a place that is supposed to be a place of worship." "We will certainly insist that those who carry out acts of terror and violence in Taybeh or anywhere be found, be prosecuted, not just reprimanded. That's not enough," he said. "People need to pay a price for doing something that destroys that which belongs not just to other people, but that which belongs to God." The rare condemnation came days after an Israeli air strike targeted the Holy Family Church in northern Gaza, killing two people and wounding several others, including a parish priest, Gaza civil defence, and church officials said on Thursday. In the villages and communities around Taybeh, Palestinian authorities reported that settlers had killed three people and damaged or destroyed multiple water sources in the past two weeks alone. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and violence has surged in the territory since Israel's war on the Gaza Strip began in October 2023. Since then, Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 957 Palestinians, including civilians, in the West Bank, according to health ministry figures. Over the same period, at least 36 Israelis, including soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations, according to official figures. Huckabee, a longtime outspoken supporter of Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories -- considered illegal under international law -- on Tuesday demanded an aggressive investigation and accountability after Israeli settlers beat a Palestinian-American to death in the West Bank.
